Circus Charlie & NGP Color

Very busy three weeks working on many, many items. Some of them involved changes to many cores. 515 files have been edited in the source code since the last JTFRIDAY, so plenty of work. The main achievements are:

A new classic game core: JTCIRCUS for Circus Charlie. Circus Charlie is an action game published in by Konami in 1984, the NES version is very popular. The player controls a circus clown named Charlie in six different circus-themed minigames plus a hidden stage named water trampoline.

Charlie's movements are very simple, moving left, right and jumping, but the emphasis in this game is on the timing of the jumps, which makes the game more challenging. Normally tagged as an action game, you could argue it is a timing game.

Story: The head of the Dream Circus wanted his only daughter, Jenny, to marry the swellest guy. It was supposed to be you, Charlie of course... but then a wacky guy drifted in from somewhere, and he's also an exceptionally good trapeze artist! If you fail in this show, your beloved Jenny will be lost to your hated rival.

The Charlie Circus PCB board was donated by Fulvio, one of our Patreon directors. Compared to the emulated version in MAME, the sprites are updated at the right time (MAME is one frame ahead. Report filed), video frame rate and dynamic audio filters are correct too.

NeoGeoPocket color games boot, although most of them still present problems. Metal Slug 1 seems to be working fine. Please do not report problems with games. We know the compatibility is low and we are working on it. The way the core works is like the monochrome one: the first time you boot you need to go through the setup. After that, if you use the virtual power button, you can swap cartridges without going through the menu again. The NGP firmware is the one responsible for showing the annoying menu. There might be a hacked version of the firmware that bypasses this menu.

Get the newest BETA.bin file off of JT's most recent post and drop in the "JTPatreon" folder on your pockets SD card under Assets. If you don't have a folder, make one. This should fix the controls on NGPC games that are currently supported.

Justin Williams

im in the same boat any fix?

Steven Bravo

Using the NGPC core my analogue buttons not working but all roms load. What am I doing wrong?

Steven Bravo

I'm sure I'm doing something wrong but the controls aren't working in NGPC roms?

Justin Williams

I just tried running NGPC on my MiSTer for the first time and it's stuck in black and white. I ran update_all 3 times today (Sep 22) with the latest jtbeta.zip but it didn't help. Is update_all sending the wrong file again? NGPC works great on my Pocket by the way. Thanks for all the great work

Anthony Monaco

Great work...! Thanks JT ! Thank you for still keeping db15!

NonstopXiaowei

Thanks for circus charlie Bug?: In stage 3, the animation where the player breaks through the ceiling is missing if left alone.

seyun

so exited about the NGPC Core!!! thanks!!

sp

Sorry, but are you referring to the 'hyperspt .zip' mame rom?

Jose Francisco

Try regenerating the ROM. The format changed a few weeks ago.

JOTEGO

Thanks for all of the hard work but Hyper Sports is not working now

Jose Francisco

thanks for that i got it working now as well, will give it a test next stream.

Retro Tuna

This was my question. Hope so!

MichaelColeFan

Awesomeness!! Thanx for the continued fun times!!

LL

Hey I was having the same issue on my Mister but no issues with my Analogue Pocket. I got it to work from changing the bios with boot.rom but used the Alternative Arcade core Neo Geo Pocket Color core. A google search for SNK - Neo Geo Pocket Color/[BIOS] SNK Neo Geo Pocket (Japan, Europe) (En,Ja).zip and internet archive should do the trick I hope.

John Davenport

Speaking of obscure arcade games, has anyone ever found a complete rom set for Mister Rogers? Copy Paste > Mister Rogers Neighborhood is an educational game developed by Nintendo R&D1 and published by Brøderbund and it was originally released for the arcades in 1986 as Vs. Mister Rogers Neighborhood on the Nintendo Vs. System and it was released in 1987 for the NES. It is loosely based on the PBS show of the same name.

Daniel Thomas Stack

i got it boot.rom

Retro Tuna

Hello, what does the neogeo pocket bios file need to be named as ?

Retro Tuna

Thanks JT, jtngpc.rbf is there and working now

Trifle

I pressume you are not using MiSTer. Regenerate the .rom file for Yie Ar Kungfu, please.

JOTEGO

It is a very interesting topic. Thank you for bringing it up.

JOTEGO

You are right! Run update_all again, please. The file will appear now.

JOTEGO

Heck ya! Thanks! Splatterhouse seems to be upside down and won't rotate, Yie air kung fu also doesn't boot. I appreciate all the hard work.

VINSTER

I tried renaming it but it's black and white

John Perry

Looks like there's a neogeopocket.rbf in the arcade/cores folder in jtfriday_240830_mister.zip but the mra refers to an rbf named "jtngpc"? If I change the mra to use that rbf I get the ngpc bios (prompts for the B&W dislay modes) but its not in colour

Trifle

Really ? Wow, that's weird I'll make further tests then eventually open an issue Thanks for your reply All the best

Adrien Duchemole

to be clear its the core I'm not finding rather than the MRA files

John Perry

I cant see it. just the MRA is there.

John Perry

Wow! Great release! Thanks JT and team

Richard Maxey

The filters in Circus Charlie are off pretty much all the time except when they clap at the end of a stage. The CPU controls it. So your perception is probably due to other aspects of the signal chain. Please open an issue on a specific core and we can go through it. Thanks.

JOTEGO

thanks a lot for the update i'm waiting for each one with a lot of interest but, this time, i'm a bit confused I've quickly tested Circus Charlie, and first, your audio filter value seemed a bit too radical to my ears (I'm both musician/composer and sound designer) I tried then some other games, to see, and felt exactly the same with Shinobi, Shadowland, Shadow Dancer, and others (I've tried games that I knew really well, and had, or still have the Pcbs) I've noticed Shadow dancer lacks the SFX when your dog grows up after being damaged Ghost n Goblins has some weird FM reactions (so does the original PCB, but different), I believe some modulator operators tend to disappear sometimes or give wrong volume values also, filter is very low on this one I don't know how you've chosen your values (probably according to the schematics ?) It is a very good thing to add lowpass filter on your games, as it will feel more faithful to original games, BUT, you also have to consider that original PCB could have extra high frequencies because of built in amp saturation (they were usually bad quality cheap amps, and could saturate pretty easily) I believe it is a good occasion to make some tests, I'll try to record ghost n goblins music at different gain level, record mister output, will match levels for all recording and see about that extra saturation, as well as comparison with your filter value sorry about that long message, despite I criticize, I don't want to sound negative, and am very happy with your cores thanks, keep improving your emulation quality

Adrien Duchemole

Great Work as always! Thanks a lot!

Lukas Schaper

Look in arcade/alternatives. Odd place, I know.

JOTEGO

Nope they are not for MiST. I see them only for MiSTer and Pocket

gkralicek

is jtngpc.rbf missing or am I on glue?

John Perry

thank you!

Luis Salinas

That annoying setup happens to my ngp when the coin battery is dead. Not seen a bios replacement to eliminate the coin battery but if there is one I would love it for the og system

Doug Plummer

Thank you Team, Have a good weekend.

Big Al.

thanks for the supporting the 24 bit analog VGA, i can finally retire crappy dongles :)

Spiff

They are in the zips..

Big Al.

Thanks Jotego! Nice to see timeless classics like Circus Charlie preserved in FPGA

Findamember

Great work, thank you!

rsn8887

Thank you team JT . There seems to be a lot going on with future fpga machines ‘work in progress’ always wonder how that will affect the compatibility etc and how you keep up with it

Mark Saunders

How comes jtriders and jtcircus are not inside the beta zip files for MiST ?

gkralicek

Great to see NGPC progress, thanks!

Gabriel S

Oh yeah, excellent work as usual.

Mike V.

Amazing work. With WWF Superstars being worked on would that mean a version of Wrestlefest may appear at somepoint. Either a port of Pram0d's AP core or a new one?

Frank McDonald

Thank you for supporting the A/V Pro 9.2 new official 24bit I/O board. Kind regards Ricardo UltimateMiSTer.com
