JTSHOUSE: Support for Galaga 88

Español abajo

The sound conversion for JTSIMSON, JTTMNT, and JTALIENS, cores compatible with 16-bit Konami titles, is ready. With this update, the problem of FX being too faint is solved. The FX-music balance of Bubble Bobble took a bit more work. We found that the percussion instruments did not have the right volume in JTOPL and fixed it. Then we discovered that JT03 (compatible with Yamaha 2203) was producing sound -6dB lower. After fixing these issues, Bubble Bobble should be perfect. Continuing on the audio topic, we will be measuring the sound volume across the main titles for each core next. The plan is to have all games produce a similar volume. We will adjust the volume to get the main song of each game in the -20 to -10dB range on our VU meter.

On the core development side, the focus is on closing the open betas. JTSHOUSE is one of them. We have continued working on it, and all Namco System 1 games boot up in the core now. However, most of them are unplayable due to graphics problems. Splatter House was already available, and we are adding Galaga '88 this week. Pac-Mania is close to being ready for beta as well. The rest of the compatible games need more work, though.

Another JT core for MiSTer visits the Analogue Pocket this week: JTKCHAMP, compatible with Karate Champ. As the game is very old, digitized voices were sampled using very little memory. As a result, the voices don't sound great. However, the hardware designers put a lot of care into the analog signal path for the audio. They did the best they could with the technology of the time.

Thank you for your support.

Thanks Jotego for these major updates, balance issues I reported previously are gone now (bubble Bobble, Konami etc...). It sounds great! But as mentionned in earlier posts, sound volume is very low with Q-Sound cores (CPS1.5 ans CPS2). I tried to adjust the volume in the test menu of the CPS2 core, but it seems impossible to change anything (sound volume is software-controlled with CPS2 hardware), no input is assigned to it, and volume is already at its maximum. PS : how about SEGA System 1 and System 2 cores ^^? I love wonderboy games so much!

It's unfortunate that I don't have a record of the full update_all logs so I could check what was updated and when. Also the YM-chip connection was just an idea without any real backing since I don't know how the MiSTer cores are built and wether the work done on audio is in some shared MiSTer library code affecting other cores or not. Also it most likely would require the cores that use it to be rebuilt and I don't see signs of that now since the Nuked-MD core seems to be dated 4th December 2023. I have a MiSTer multisystem (RMC Retro/Huber). I wonder if this is just a case of the memory not being completely cleared on shutdown or something, since I'm not sure if I pulled the plug during the weekend...

TheGeez

Interesting …… 🤔

Adam Davis

Not sure what I did wrong, but the sound is super low on CPS2 Capcom games. Havent checked other cores yet though. (this is on an Analogue Pocket)

After the Easter update I was also having wide spread problems but they were not limited to the jt-cores since the Nuked-MD core was also affected (graphical glitching and cut/weird audio). I thought that they might be connected due to the YM-chips used. A couple of times afterwards update_all seemed to just update cheats and palettes - nothing of consequence. Today I ran the Mister SDRAM Test core and I could run the test error free @ 140MHz for over an hour - so not a memory issue... an now suddenly everything works as expected leaving me with a big question mark? I booted and shutdown several times during the weekend to no avail and now it just works... *shrugs*

TheGeez

I see so maybe my SDRAM was failing and just couldn’t hit those higher frequency’s …. Thanks Jose I appreciate the feedback 🙏🏼

Adam Davis

It's odd. Try deleting the save/config files.

JOTEGO

Those CPS1 games would even work on a 32MB SDRAM. I do not know what was going on in your case, but SDRAM can be tricky with the CPSx cores as they run it at 96MHz, contrary to the rest of JTCORES that use half the speed. That caused a lot of trouble during the core development, even forcing a whole new SDRAM design iteration.

JOTEGO

The marvel vs Capcom fighting games have low db sounds now ....

Tony Vo

Stoked to see the Namco System 1 core get additional games. The sounds on Splatterhouse is still in progress I take it.

Owlnonymous

we live and learn, but mainly on the Discord channel. 😊 Glad it worked, putting stereo sound on as well, makes it better.

Big Al.

Ok problem solved! After troubleshooting all weekend I figured out that swapping my 128 SDRAM sticks with my 2nd MiSTer was the culprit! Weirdest fault ever since the troubled MiSTer played all CPS1.5 and CPS2 games just fine …. Is CPS1 more RAM intensive? Does the audio consume more RAM through the CPS1 core? Very strange issue and apologies since it was a hardware fault on my end. Thanks Jose and Team! V/r, Adam

Adam Davis

Thank you Big Al!!! Where and how did you know that? Its like I never stop learning new MiSTer tricks. Thank you again.

Alan Roth

I assumed you meant the Pocket, on MISTer press F2 then do above.

Big Al.

On Mister there is no option 8 coins / game options / attract sound . I just updated again. Is there some mystery key press im not aware of? F12 is the only menu and its not listed there. Now TMNT has a DIP Switchs/Demo sounds. Which turn the attract music on and off. The Simpsons does not, also Vendetta has same issue. Im current on all versions.

Alan Roth

its under option 8 coins / game options/attract sound its definitely there

Big Al.

Further troubleshooting after removing MisTerCade from the equation and re-installing the analogue I/O board the music is still missing from games. Ran a complete fresh install and sounds are still missing. Appears to only be CPS1 cores. CPS2 cores have effects and music. CPS1 audio is broken.

Adam Davis

No setting for attract mode. Only Video, User port, Show credits in pause & Reset. I looked under Video also, nothing for Attract.

Alan Roth

I'm having trouble with Aliens in the Jt Aliens Core. I can get the alternative versions to work, but can't get the main rom to work, the "Aliens world 1" rom. It was working prior to the update.

John

Digging in a little deeper looks like not all of your cores are affected. Street Fighter, Ghouls and Ghosts …. Maybe some others, but not all …..

Adam Davis

Awesome before even playing this

Tony Vo

Missing music and sound effects for most of your Cores now Jotego … Street Fighters, Ghouls and Ghosts …. Sound is broken now ….

Adam Davis

The sound on the cores for me are so much cleaner - teenage mutant ninja turtles for example. Wonderful. Galaga 88 nice , thanks JT

Mark Saunders

Overjoyed to see Galaga '88! Thank you!

Rune P

After getting the rom, the music sounds great, but some of the sound effects appear to be clipped (especially the highs), like when the points tally at the end of “that’s galactic dancing” bonus round. Still in all, a nice beta!

Tofana10am

Having problems with Galaga ‘88. Error message reads games/mame/galaga88.zip/cus64-6cus-64-64al.mcu not found. Looks like update_all didn’t pull the rom down.

Tofana10am

Jotego has laid an Easter egg Awesome to see these classic games in their full glory

Alexander Stieglmayr

Awesomeness!!

LL

Fantastic. Thanks so much for all your hard work and time once again! 👍🏼

Brett

go into service mode and switch the attract sound on, probably the same for Vendetta.

Big Al.

The Audio for Simpsons During the Opening (music) is not playing. During the game play audio is fine.

Alan Roth

Great updates to have for the Easter weekend. Thank you.

Daniel Thomas Stack

Excellent work. Thanks to everyone involved!

ARCADEAGES
