Out Run Progress & Renegade
Added 2022-07-22 17:22:52 +0000 UTCShort update this week to tell you that work on the Out Run system continues. The game currently boots to a halt, although the service menu works. Too bad the built-in checks cannot find any problems with the core. I have moved my attention to Super Hang On, which is like Out Run but shares the sprites chip with System 16B. This one boots and goes through the demo loop, but the road is just a straight line, so it isn’t playable yet. Only the FM music works perfectly at the moment and PCM support is on its way. We have a good chance of having Super Hang On working in a week.
As part of the research done for Out Run, a bug in the System 16B mapper became clear. Fixing it prevented a situation where Golden Axe would halt in level 2. The files in JTBIN were updated with the fix a few days ago.
On the schematics front, we finished Gun Bird 2 and we went to an older system for a change. We have got about 50% of Renegade done now (see the attached PDF file). This system would be easy to port to FPGA if it wasn’t for the MCU. I think there is one version of the game that doesn’t use an MCU. We may start from that one.

Thank you for the work you do! I hate to bring it up but Golden Axe still breaks at level 2 and currently displays some garbage during the demo artwork. Hopefully this will continue to be resolved as Outrun is cracked.

2022-09-05 23:35:07 +0000 UTCWell, as has been mentioned by more than one person, work done on the Pocket versions of these cores is not exclusive to that system and could lead to squashed bugs and improved versions of the cores for all systems. So even that is not 100% accurate.

2022-08-25 17:24:28 +0000 UTCThere is nothing "weird" about that movement. I understand that owners of other devices want the cores too. When people start working on other devices, the device they are already working on might loose focus. So it's a perfectly normal movement. It troubles me too, that there might be less focus and releases for the MiSTer... splitting work power is never good.

Is it too early to speculate on the X and Y board games like After Burner or Power Drift? Or are those just vastly too different to guess at this time? I know Sega’s solution to everything for a while was to just throw more 68ks at things so I could see how those might get a little hairy.
