I was one to fall for the simplicity of Arkanoid in my 8-bit home computer. I thought with the first two Arkanoid games, the series was over and didn’t give credit to any other block game. Then I came across CAPCOM’s Block Block. This game brought fresh air to the genre five years after the first Arkanoid was released.

Although the basic rule is the same: don’t let the ball fall, it adds many new elements that enrich the game. You can have blocks below the paddle, the two player mode is cooperative, not turn based, the block size is not unique… The graphics get the benefit of the larger memories available in 1991, so animations are richer and the game is more colourful. A very enjoyable game to play with your family!

The main version you’ll find is controlled with a joystick, but if you look in the alternatives folder you’ll find the Japanese and world versions that are controlled with a mouse. In MiST you can connect two mouse devices for the 2P mode, but MiSTer doesn’t support that. I’m looking into adding paddle and joystick control too to the mouse versions, but this beta requires a mouse (or to play to the joystick version).

There are two more games this week, but only for Akira Kurosawa levelJapanese speakers. Dokaben is a card-based baseball game and CAPCOM world is a quiz game. Some of quiz questions are about manga and anime characters from the 80’s so this is really going to test how hard core you are!

These games run in the CAPCOM Pang! hardware, which is better supported in this new beta. You’ll notice that a missing frame in the first Super Pang demo screen is now displayed correctly. Sound is also a bit better, although it will still sound a bit different from the real hardware. For instance, the sound envelope is smoother in our current version because it works like the expensive Yamaha chip YM3812 instead of the cut down  version used here. Not a terrible difference, but I’m working on it too.

There will be no game release next week as I will resume work on NeoGeo Pocket.

Fui uno de los que se enamoró de la simplicidad de Arkanoid en mi ordenadorde 8 bits. Pensé que con los primeros dos juegos de Arkanoid, la serie había terminado y no le daba crédito a ningún otro juego de bloques. Luego me encontré con Block Block de CAPCOM. Este juego trajo aire fresco al género cinco años después del lanzamiento del primer Arkanoid.

Aunque la regla básica es la misma: no dejes caer la pelota, añade muchos elementos nuevos que enriquecen el juego. Puedes tener bloques debajo de la paleta, el modo de dos jugadores es cooperativo, no por turnos, el tamaño de los bloques no es único... Los gráficos mejoran gracias a las memorias más grandes disponibles en 1991, por lo que las animaciones son más ricas y el juego es más colorido. ¡Un juego muy divertido para jugar con tu familia!

La versión principal que encontrarás se controla con un joystick, pero si buscas en la carpeta de alternativas encontrarás las versiones japonesa y mundial que se controlan con ratón. En MiST, puedesconectar dos ratonespara el modo 2P, pero MiSTer no lo permite. Estoy buscando agregar control de paleta (paddle) y joystick también a las versiones de ratón, pero esta versión beta requiere un mouse (o para jugar con la versión de joystick).
