Research & Development

We spent the week purely on research & development activites. Esperanza got quite far with the Sly Spy schematics (see the attached file) and I implemented 15 more instructions in the NeoGeo Pocket CPU. The CPU has now about 80% of its instructions implemented. I think the CPU needs two more weeks, and then I can start working on the rest of the NeoGeo system.

For Sly Spy, we will see the results next Friday. The plan is to leverage the current DEC0 core (Robocop, etc.), and the information from schematics and MAME to make a Sly Spy core. There are two custom chips in the board that MAME has at least partly documented from their own reverse engineering. I’m hoping to complement that with the schematics information and if needed, write a custom firmware to run on the original PCB to extract any needed information from these chips.

That’s all for this week. Please have a look at the schematics attached. We have tried to keep the same naming style that Data East used in the Robocop, Heavy Barrel and Hippodrome schematics.

Hemos pasado la semana puramente en actividades de investigación y desarrollo. Esperanza ha llegado bastante lejos con los esquemas de Sly Spy (ver el archivo adjunto) y yo implementé 15 instrucciones más en la CPU de NeoGeo Pocket. La CPU tiene ya alrededor del 80% de instrucciones implementadas. Creo que aun necesita dos semanas más y entonces por fin podré empezar a trabajar en el resto del sistema NeoGeo Pocket.

Para Sly Spy, veremos los resultados el próximo viernes. El plan es aprovechar el núcleo DEC0 actual (Robocop, etc.) y la información de los esquemas y MAME para hacer elSly Spy. Hay dos chips personalizados en la placa que MAME ha documentado al menos en parte a partir de su propia ingeniería inversa. Espero complementar eso con la información de losesquemáticosy, si es necesario, escribir un firmware a postapara ejecutar en la PCB original y asíextraer la información necesaria de estos chips.
