In which Grandma Arbuckle returns! Enough said!
I agree totally. At the very end, Pat Carroll's voice breaks as she says that Christmas is "the night that she misses (her husband) the most." It is a very poignant scene overall that adds a great deal of depth to the special overall--which is predominantly a comedy, but still has very deep, moving moments in it. It also highlights how the holidays can be a very bittersweet time for people. There are good memories of it, but also a reminder of people who have moved on. Or how the holidays can be a mixture of good and bad. I am glad that they acknowledge this in the special, especially in such a personal and moving way that also enhances such a terrific character.

There’s so much to be said about that scene with Grandma. First of all, it comes right after she does the swing bop version of a song that’s usually soft and slow. Additionally, it is a private moment between her and Garfield, and of course us, the audience. As far as she knows, she’s talking to herself, Garfield isn’t understanding her. It’s interesting how she commented about how her husband didn’t really show his emotions, unless it was Christmas, and here she is having this very private moment to herself, she isn’t sharing these memories with her family. And Pat Carroll just nailed it, she sounded so vulnerable, a very different side to a character we already loved, and seeing this side just made me love her all the more.
