November update

Hi Serializd family! Been a while since the last Patreon update. As mentioned before, October involved improving Serializd behind-the-scenes. I'm happy to report that lots of bugs were fixed (the crash rate went from 2% to 0.5% on Android!) and the app runs much smoother than it did a month ago.

A lot of this work involves small, incremental changes that are not noticeable, but are necessary for the long-term health of the platform. However, there is one issue (or rather, group of issues) I haven't fixed: peoples' stats being messed up sometimes.

This is partly because this technically isn't an issue in the first place. I get a lot of reports of peoples' stats not being "correct". But when I do some digging, I usually find one of the following:

  1. A show they marked as "watched" was modified by TMDB. For example, TMDB may have decided to move things around so that a special episode is included in Season 1 of a "watched" show. Suddenly, the stats go up by 1 episode and 1 hour, which is incorrect but because the show was marked as "watched" already, Serializd assumes that special episode was watched. The inverse happens too where TMDB will remove certain episodes from a show, or change the runtime of episodes, which will make peoples' stats go down.

  2. A show with 100+ episodes was marked as "watched" but stats don't reflect this. This is normal - it takes a few minutes for the system to catch up and update stats due to the large number of episodes it has to process.

  3. Serializd mis-calculated something. This one is very rare, but it does happen. The good news is that stats are re-calculated pretty often, so even if you see something wrong, it should fix itself within a day at most. If it doesn't, and you're absolutely sure of this, please email help@serializd.com with details.

So basically, stats are usually "correct", as much as TMDB is correct. They can't be perfect because a public database will not be perfect. I know people aren't the biggest fans of TMDB and how it works, but it really is the best TV database available, and it's not really possible for Serializd to build its own database.

That being said, I am working on a way to give people more insight into their stats so that if their stats change, they are able to get a good sense of what happened.

Anyway - I started writing this post to give a quick update on what's next, but got side-tracked. What I came here to say was: work on Serializd Wrapped 2025 has started! I'm hoping to get this out by early December! Stay tuned!
