So when Gandalf('s body) was killed, he was given a new one to finish the work he started. Saruman got corrupted by the idea of the Ring. If he (or Gandalf) got the Ring, they could basically become as powerful as Sauron. Sauron himself was of the same Angel-type as the Wizards had been, but a lot more powerful. But all of his (let's say heavenly/hellly) powers were tied up in the Ring, because being "of the Earth" would give him more influence over it and focus his powers.

2024-08-16 12:08:11 +0000 UTCGandalf (and Saruman and the other Wizards) weren't human. They were sort of "angels" who had been given human forms. The gods of Middle Earth would no longer get involved, but they still wanted Sauron stopped. So they sent the five Wizards (or Istari) to rally the peoples, and enable them to destroy Sauron.
