This all has to do with Fourth Ring and that part of the wall/underground systems collapsing isolating it.

Well regular Ferum has as much of a chance fighting a Machina as a human would to a t-800 terminator. Ferum were used in combat before Machina, but you need to be augmented to use weapons and that does give you a better chance.
