Behind the scenes - pencils

In my process I use thumbnails to rough out my chapter, basically planning the entire chapter out ahead of time. Usually these end up being pretty close to how the layouts of the final pages look, but sometimes, like here, I decide to change it.
I realized the page itself was really heavy on headshots. The specific panel in the thumbnail (on the left) was basically a repeated shot as another panel on the same page. Instead of leaving it as is, I decided the page needed some more variation, so what I did instead was changed it to the pencil sketch that appears on the right. Same panel, completely different mood.
It’s really interesting how a simple change to hands or to an object can completely alter the way something reads in a comic!
