February 22nd is Toivo's birthday, so to celebrate it, I decided to share some art from before the comic launched!

I created Toivo as a character for a few years before the comic started, so there's quite a few iterations of him through the years.

Toivo's current iteration materialized in late 2015. He's had lots of different hairstyles, but the basic combination of glasses + thick eyebrows + lanky figure has always been the same. He used to have a few more scars, but I simplified it over time.

Rosemary as a character was also developed in late 2015. Her design hasn't changed a whole lot, I've just gotten better at drawing her hair.

Before I started the comic, I would just draw a lot of random things, ranging from alternate versions of characters to writing out backstory stuff and drawing out that. I did a lot of pages of expressions to practice drawing emotions. Often the subject of that was Toivo, but I often have at least one page of expressions for every important character. Sometimes I'd draw Toivo as a human, with regular old ears, but a lot of times it was elf ears.
