Bonus Credit 51 - Big Mike Over Here

Hear Frank's interest in a mediocre-at-best looking motorcycle game from the PS3/360 era, more of Ash's adorable sweetheart cutiebabychild of a puppy, Brandon investigating his past with bagel slicers, and strange tales of Day-Z devs. Plus, Esper and Jaffe talk about Dragon Quest HD-2D 3D D-ysphoria, Jimmy Olsen, and what actually counts as playing Magic the Gathering.

(Ep. 363) Pre-show. Brandon explains how he got the initial funding round for Necrosoft Games. Jaffe is on a real red bean kick right now, but can’t follow Frank into kidney beans. You can whip that juice up into a foam and make a vegan cocktail. Ash is welcomed to here. She has a new microphone since recording this.
(Ep. 363) Extended break. Dog (and cat!) talk! Ash’s son has a slipper purely for mangling purposes. Frank lets his two new kittens fix everything. The Puppycam is born (and can be seen here)
(Ep. 364) Pre-show. We don’t know how to turn off Discord’s “Suggested Activities” which almost ruined a meeting Brandon had. Ash is getting better at figuring out her dog’s pee triggers. Frank mixes up Riders on the Storm with Ghost Riders in the Sky, which you heard most of in the actual intro to this episode, but Brandon mentions that it is specifically a song that is often performed on a Vietnamese traditional one-stringed instrument called the dan bau. We featured that as the intro music for this episode, but Esper didn’t include this factoid in the show proper, so now it is exclusive content for you all to know and the public to remain unfortunately unaware of. Special guest Kieron Gillen just likes boxes!
(Ep. 364) Extended break. Ash thinks her puppy may be part cat, or at least raised around cats. Special guest Kieron Gillen explains what a cattery is and why his cats are there. Nick Lowe didn’t know what a rockery was, which is not a rookery.
(Ep. 365) Extended break. Brandon has a Jewish Dad question. Ash used to work in the Bed Bath & Beyond wedding registration section.
(Ep. 365) Post-show. Frank shows off some excellent Halverson Effect, but isn’t sure he wants to buy a giant lot of Play magazines. Jaffe shares a story about Day-Z, and Brandon shares a different story about Day-Z. Ash inquires about the Insert Credit Game of the Year process. Nothing we talk about on this show matters. Almond Joy has nuts, Mounds don’t. It’s possible Ride To Hell: Retribution is the kind of bad game Brandon might like, but the melee QTEs may be a dealbreaker.
Esper and Jaffe convene once again with thoughts on how Dragon Quest III HD-2D 3D Remake-D might evoke dysphoria, Superman’s Pal’s Boss, Naruto meeting the Ninja Turtles, Kieron’s Power Fantasy, and Magic: the Gathering.

It's really interesting to hear Jaffe encounter almost the exact same dysphoria that I did (as a nonbinary person) while playing a different game in the Dragon Quest series. DQ11 forces you to play as a male protag and I had the exact same feeling of dysphoria made considerably worse by the fact that he is a stand-in for You The Player rather than an established character like a Nathan Drake or whatever. It had never occurred to me that a very similar thing could happen to a cis dude, and I really appreciated the insightful conversation with Esper :)

2025-01-11 10:39:17 +0000 UTCA little late to this one, but regarding "what is playing Magic", a full best of 3 round with sideboarding is good, but I think the big appeal for Magic is in tournament play. I think it'd be neat to get everybody to play one game against the others round robin style, then let the winner play Esper. I also think it would be entertaining to see Esper play Storm or Landstill or Vintage Dredge or some kind of weird deck that bears no resemblance to playing Magic the normal way.

Enjoyed experiencing Ash learning that the show is not going to make her rush out an end of year list, or end of year anything, and did not expect the dysphoria talk around DQ3. The game does let you know that you'll be playing as a boy or girl once you select the "style", although their wording made me double check that I was getting locked in. For self-insert games, like a lot of dating sims, I always feel that dysphoric pang when forced into a male identity when dating women. I'd skipped that Perry White comic when I saw it only had a 7-page original story alongside reprints, but completely forgot to check it out on DCInfinite down the line. Thanks for the reminder.
