The Spectacular Failure of the Star Wars Hotel

Comments

I just went to Disney for the first time ever. I’m 40 with an 8 and 5 year old. And I wholeheartedly agree with Jenny’s assessment at the end, we did this one trip, felt kinda bad about it and we will never return.

With time to reflect I believe the failure can be pinned primarily on Disney not fully leaning in to luggage based game play. What if you could buy your own luggage on Alderaan? Discover that your luggage had accidentally been sent to Hoth? Negotiate with a scheming Luggage Broker on Tattooine? Get turned in to luggage in the under city of Coruscant in order to infiltrate the Luggage Fighting Pits? Finally be reunited with your luggage in front of the 400 waterfalls of Naboo. You can be together now. Is this a dream? No, this is Star Wars Hotel.

This is high Art, it literally gets better every time I watch it. Amazing achievement

I'm sure I've already commented but somehow on my 100th rewatch I still have such strong opinions lol WHY did they build it in a random backstage parking lot??? And if that was inevitable- why not build it in the guest parking lot right outside the park and connect it to the park with an "exclusive" ride?? If its an issue of keeping their cars safe, lots of underground parking garages keep cars relatively safe with a fraction of disneys security presence. And the existing building already is questionable as for fire safety, so just lock the entry elevator to room key holders like most hotel elevators do now anyways (frustratingly). And having a new ride open to all guests would to make people feel better about the hotel, but à la rise of the resistance your hotel guests go a completely different route based on their story paths! Then you dont have to have a shuttle, you can justify the expense of a droid, you can do an emergency landing story, and when your terrible hotel fails you still have a new ride and can lazily generate buzz by allowing the existing special alternate routes into the general rotation. Personally I would pitch a mechanic where you can vote for which one the group does just to insert some palpatine/padame sass about democracy for the visitors being outvoted. And if youre worried about retheming the hotel to different eras, just make it more droid and spaceship oriented- its MY star wars adventure why do I need a count dooku to appear?? Why not pretend its just me, the 5 strangers I waited in line with, and my droid avoiding asteroids, scavengers, and space pirates in our space pod- thats all i want in life except a lightsaber but realistically you know you probably wont have the force. But thats the thing, its one of the only universes with a lot of non chosen one characters having agency and something interesting going on. I think thats a lot of the charm, why it feels so exciting and lived in. Boba fett isnt a chosen one (unless they ruined that since I last checked in), he's just a weirdly intense spartan warrior guy doing his best. Han solo isnt chosen, hes just some mediocre guy that acts gross to women. Leah is chosen, but it feels like she does her own thing in her own way instead of following a typical chosen one storyline, in a way that ultimately impacts the universe more than her brothers classic chosen one path. Now im just rambling about star wars. Give it back Disney, I don't like how youre playing with our Star Wars >:( I'd also make a star wars dolewhip counter. I dont know what the food would be, but definately incorporate a terrible app and a nightmarish experience where you have to plan ahead and preorder online. Its definately something frozen that suffers from sitting out in the sun for more than a minute. The menu is only accessible via qr codes, yes there are people at the counter, no they will not take your order or your money. Yes they just put the competed orders on a counter, and someone could probably easily just take one that isnt theirs by accident or on purpose. No you cant have a replacement unless you go through a tedious AI chatbot that doesn't understand anything about the human world. Really immerse people in the frustration of living on a run down mercenary hellhole planet where life is hard and unfair lol

Your videos are masterpieces.

Congratulations on the Hugo nomination!!

i remember this video came out the week that I had to sand, paint and varnish a cabinet in my living room for hours a day and having this video to listen to throughout (think I got through it twice) made it a way more fun experience than it should've been

If you watch Andrew Barth Feldman’s Starcruiser vlog, his Lenka and Wraithe kiss during the dinner show.

People have said in the comments on youtube that they had fire escapes accessible from the hallways, it was just the private hotel rooms that didn't have direct access to the outside. And that was solved with the "shame closets" which are ventilated and considered safe enough to be an alternative. I don't work in this field at all but I do believe Disney wouldn't be stupid enough to blatantly break basic safety regulations like that, so that explanation makes sense to me.

Silky

Genuinely wondering, how did zoning, fire, and safety codes allow this hotel to be built? I’ve done some work on hotels and apartment buildings around the US and generally buildings, regardless of use, that don’t have windows are really hard to get built. I’m not an expert and pretty early on in my career, but I have read hundreds (if not thousands) of pages of form based code/zoning and this feels like something that generally wouldn’t be allowed? Anyone have any info on this?

I've been a long time watcher/subber since around maybe before the TLJ days, watched you on yer own channel and yer own show Millennial Falcon... I have been on and off of Jenny's content because she doesn't upload much on YT for years, but that Galactic Starcruiser video blew up and I was back again. Now I am a patreon subber!

Medalion

Best 4 hour video I’ve ever seen!

Alive_in_tucson

I asked Chris Provost, from Provost Park Pass, if he'd seen Jenny's video. He had nothing but praise for her, here's the Youtube clip. https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxY6NfRPZWobg5-El33PgTtxdE8zGVrFt1?si=C3dNpBUm-edPsz7E

I will pay you $300 for a shirt with your “uncritical review” picture on it. XL

Something I'd love to see if it would be fun for you would be an amethea tope video. Like fully as her, whatever type of vids she makes. Reminds me of some of the shorter vids you've made

Natalie

A friend told me you are name dropped in this Star Wars Acolyte review video at 6:41. Apparently there is a Zygerrian Jedi that looks a little like you. 😂 https://youtu.be/HPk4nEROZFw?si=bZRM4VeDeW3OsUrk

Hannah Vaughn

I've enjoyed your videos before but this is the one I knew I'd have to subscribe for, so comprehensive and it was nice to see what could have been for such a large Star Wars venture. I really wish they hadn't fucked it up and had a way more reasonable price point cuz the potential was so there!

Phoenix Soul

Glad to see this video making waves! Jenny's been toiling at it for literal years.

Deepti Kannapan

This is where it all began! Took me a week to finish watching this video on YouTube, and another to scroll through all the other videos there, before I finally found this patreon channel. I’m obsessed with Jenny now 🤣

Feiyuan

Loved hearing Matt Rogers from Las Culturistas shout out the video yesterday!! He’s a big Disney theme park guy so I thought this would cross his radar and he only had glowing things to say. On my first of what I can only assume will be many rewatches of this masterpiece.

Alexandra Ashall

Now you mention it that does feel like an oversight. iirc I changed my profile in the Play app to say Amethia Tope (I can't remember but it'll be in the footage of the chat threads if so). but then all the screens in the actual ship said Jennifer, so there wasn't a foolproof way to change your name on the digital side of things As for what the characters call you I have no idea. I've been told by people that the actors get your name from earpieces and been told from other people that they definitely don't and just learn it irl. So it's all speculation. I don't think any actor ever referred to me by any name but that could just be because they didn't interact with me enough to remember it, so I don't have any firsthand evidence

Jenny Nicholson

Coming back yet again to comment another thought: if your information on the was tied to your legal identification what were the staff to do if that isn’t the name you go by? You mentioned they completely stonewalled you when you tried to go by Amethia, and the footage showed the computers listed you as Jennifer, I assume if you introduce yourself as Jenny they can connect the dots but would they do that for someone with a legal name that was obviously different? That strikes me as an uncomfortable situation for trans guests who haven’t changed their name or gender marker legally. I know a lot of trans Star Wars fans who would have been in the ideal demographic for this it just feels like another oversight on their part.

Jen Proctor

I literally came back to mention that lol. I dunno if she's been mentioned in major media like this before but yeah it feels pretty big lol

Brandon K Kamaka

holy shit - a new york times article about this?!?!!!????!! https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/07/movies/jenny-nicholson-disney-star-wars-hotel-review.html?smid=url-share

the one's going in the library of congress i already know it

Great video, if too kind to a genuinely terrible experience. Your energy really invites commiseration. Excited for more content! I would think that the "Worth it?" section as an abbreviated video would also be phenomenal as a stand-alone - directly tackling terrible theme park-fluencer ethics.

serguzzle

omg those dumplings in a variety of colors look amazing

Jill Morris

As a veeeeery casual fan of star wars, I like when the robots go boop, I think it's amazing that you have made me so knowledgeable of this franchise. I would listen to you talk about almost anything. Also I am so thankful that you have a strong sense of integrity and compassion and I get a big kick out of you calling out all the smarmy douches. Why can't you be president?!

J B

Killer job, Jenny! Worth the wait and deserving all of the attention and acclaim

Caleb Van Nice

Congratulations on the immense success of this video!!!

Finally got to finish the video. Congrats, Jenny, what a masterpiece. Equal parts review, documentary, and travel vlog, you nail every bit of the experience and boil down what works and what doesn't. My sister and I, during our trip, were having a good time but we kept mentioning to each other things that honestly should have been included given the original price and you nailed it with the Disney penny pinching and nickle and diming aspect. There are only a few things which seem "luxury" about your luxury star cruiser adventure. I was amazed at how much truly went wrong on your trip. Surely someone at Disney had to realize they were screwing over a big time youtuber?! And even if you weren't, someone had to realize that for any average guest that experience would be awful! Also by way of for instance, I also got the SK droid and I only opened him up after I got home from Florida and his little domed head doesn't move correctly to the left. Disney customer service basically blew me off and I don't have 1 million follows to post about on twitter so I just got a janky droid now. Disney has really stopped caring about the "magic" of the customer experience. But jokes on them I stole one of the blankets and they didnt charge me for it. I'm sad that the hotel is dead for now and won't likely get a chance to address the concerns, but I am happy that there is such a definitive expose on the experience so it won't get brushed over by the ravages of time. I was not shocked, but do find it funny, the level of disney ass covering astroturfing is out there right now trying to discredit this video. You really nailed it and struck a nerve. Final thoughts on this video: Your costumes are amazing and I was blown away by the full on haterade gaya song parody. It actually slaps, can we get that as a stand alone Mp3 download?
