December Ramble - 2018 Year in Review

Another very rambly ramble is here! December's winning topic was the Year in Review, whatever that entails

December Ramble - 2018 Year in Review

Comments

I'm a new patreon and I've been watching these ramble videos chronologically. I think its very funny that the second Jeff the Killer fanfic video that apparently never materialized keeps being mentioned every video like its gonna come out soon. I'm very interested to find out what happens or if one day its just never mentioned again...

Celozon

I used to be a professional studio camera operator, and I need a job, any job. Hope you get big and can hire me soon!

christopher wilco

I have had good luck with Blue mics I had 2 snowball and a Yeti we used for a podcast and music and never had any problems.

Josh Willard

If I call myself an agent can I work for you? I'm very good at sending very aggressive formal emails.

Allison

Did that "getting an agent" thing ever come to fruition?

Marissa Collins

No, on the left there's a filter that lets you filter by patron only posts and more.

Austin Baker

44:00 Tracker envy.

Sinbad Dreamshaft

OR go up to the Filter settings at the left of this page and Sort By Oldest First, and then scroll, scroll, and scroll some more.

Steve Ray

Nope. Just scroll, scroll, and scroll some more.

Steve Ray

Hi pals! I’m new here. Is there a playlist of all the Patreon exclusive videos?

Yarrow Bouchard

I work with the Zoom h4N pro. For both my hobby podcast and for internships, it's a great Microphone. Although you do need to buy a USB type B cable with it to use it as a USB mic. You would also need a mic stand and a pop filter with it. But for the price point, it is a phenomenal microphone.

adam

Jenny oh my god I thought Ready Player One for girls was real I have been bamboozled how could this happen

jessiphile

CollegeHumor still exists... They make new videos regularly. Ready Player One for Girls is one of my favorite videos of yours, Jenny. That's surprising that it doesn't have as many views as some of your others. I've shared it with some peeps!

Nick Ulanowski

also LOL at "you must be mistaken" re: TLJ. You're totally right about the psychology behind those comments. I genuinely consider you a kind of social critic, even though you never really talk about "society". For example, just a little before in this video, I'm struck by how funny your comment about the nature of opinion pieces is lol. I always respect and am interested in your opinions, whereas with other cultural/art critics, I often don't care about what they have to say about other things.

It seems Winx Club in Italy is like what Miraculous Ladybug is becoming in Brazil.

Talic-os

Other legends further have it that the original "Winx Club" pilot episode had faerie princesses competing to flirt with the magical Sunshine Prince of Carcosa, and the show was variously pitched as "The Yellow Princess," "The Sunshine Club," "Winks For A King," and then finally "Winx Club." All the productions have struggled with storylines, and it's said in both Hollywood and Napoli that writing for Winx Club leads to madness, which is reflected in the bizarre plots that are usually blamed on translation errors.

Steve Ray

Legend has it that "Winx Club" is a "magical girls" animation property that has traveled back and forth between Italy and America, sometimes with very low-quality translations and dubbing, and those translation errors got preserved in later translations.

Steve Ray

Is it just me that doesn't know what Winx Club is? I've even watched the Ramble vid where Jenny goes on about it for like 25 minutes and I still don't know what it is. I'm male and grew up in the UK, is it anything like Power Rangers?

Alex Dixon

also-- hope the Winx video pans out!! That sounds fantastic!

Sarah Hubbard

for the most part I've recorded using a Rode NT1A mic through an Apogee Duet interface for the past 2.5 years and I'm really happy with them! The Duet especially is a bit of an investment (though I think you can get some resonably-priced ones used) I also occasionally use a Blue Yeti and have had good experiences with it for the past 3 or so years (although I had a similar issue to the one you're describing with an older Blue Snowball)

Sarah Hubbard

Dang there goes my Winx Club deep dive idea, though tbh I trust you to handle it better than I ever could.

Victoria Malone

I first watched your Reality Show video. For some reason I was super cynical about it at first, but by the end I was hooked

Patrick Lee

Lady here! I actually got hooked on your channel when an angry man posted your video about the Last Jedi on a forum to complain about it! I was thrilled to find a youtube reviewer who also liked Last Jedi. Also Worst Reality Show of All Time. Love that video.

Didge Ridoo

I third this

Austin Hughes

I second this

EmperorEthan

I will say that while I love all of your videos, "The Worst Book" was absolutely the video that hooked me. So I would say you're super right about Booktube gettin' you those lady views.

Kelsey R Howell

Congrats on a great year! Get that free stuff!

Booty McJohnson

Ahhhh streaming Jenny! that sounds amazing. Are you thinking video games or is there a way for you to stream yourself talking over shows or whatever?

ruby jewelry on me

I don't know if you actually want feedback on this or not, but I don't really notice much of a difference between videos-with-clips versus without clips? Even if I haven't seen the film, you describe it well enough that I still find the video interesting/entertaining, and the rewatch factor is still good.

Erin Rockfort

Why is this ramble not titled Dark Internet Ritual To Summon Jenny To Your Goosebumps Watch Party?

Neil Dutton

Oh my god, please do a Winx video!!! I would love to vicariously relive that strange period of my life where I marathoned the whole thing and wrote fanfic for it in middle school.

Frankie

If you're willing to upgrade to using a soundcard, the focusrite solo unit is excellent https://www.amazon.com/Focusrite-Scarlett-Studio-Interface-Recording/dp/B01E6T54E2

Josephine Macken

the AT2020 USB mic is actually really useful and has such pretty sound quality for an iffy-lower price? i think it's around 140!

jack cassidy

I had a Winx doll as a kid that was extremely true to the cartoon & I tried to google it but I guess they don't exist now! I'm so old

Jewels

I too listen to your old videos all the time! I can listen to you talk in my ears any time.

Johnny G

The modern College Humor is College Humor! They're still going, and have their own streaming subscription service. It's actually quite good 👍

Cat Dad

That demographic info was interesting, thanks for sharing it.

ruby jewelry on me

That standard is indeed spreading, but I first noticed about a decade ago that kids who were attending a four-year college couldn't use hypotheticals to build or tear down an idea, a baffling gap.

Steve Ray

I love re-watching your 50 Shades and Greatest Showman videos. I don't usually pay as much attention to the use of clips in review/discussion videos. I'm here for the insight of the speaker. <3

Nikki Bell-Morrison

Exceptionally good 'Ramble.' After the tour-de-force of Trigger Warning, I am proud to be on of the people that puts you in the Patreon Top 200.

Dan McComb

Hey, I think hbomb knows quite a bit about audio set ups and stuff? He'd probably be able to give you some suggestions!

My-Linn Hillefors

I don't think it's just young people but for all people 'repeat your original position and demonise all others' is becoming increasingly standard. Twitter is particularly bad for that - there's no room for subtlety or debate - just an appeal to your team and a chance to rile the other team.

Stuart Payne

The modern style of "debate," especially from young idealish folks, is just to repeat your position, so it's not surprising these Last-Jedi absolutists can't handle nuance even at the level of "We agree about some things, but not everything." [UPDATED TO BE LESS GROUCHY]

Steve Ray

That so-called "bingo" was full-on remote viewing, in my book, anyway.

Steve Ray

Although I loved the Millennial Falcon, I think it was maybe taking up too much of her time. Her numbers on this channel started rising rapidly after she could devote herself to it alone again.

Stuart Payne

Sadly, nobody's planning on founding a new civilization on Mars using only her videos to remind them what life was like back on Earth, so I say it's totally fine if any given video is merely awesome and funny, vs. *also* being a usable Cliff's Notes of the topic.

Steve Ray

I think YouTube doesn't let folks monetize videos about certain types of crime, to hopefully [nip-in-the-bud] any tsunami of unsavory-tho-descriptive videos.

Steve Ray

I hadn't seen the greatest showman and I didn't even notice you weren't using clips. You described it so well that it totally worked.

Carlotta

Apparently I bounce around a lot when falling asleep and while sleeping, which causes me to kick the sheets everywhere and my partner to hate me. I'm hoping a weighted blanket will solve the bouncing, as well as the insomnia.

¹¡íÁ·¥úGáB½5@±t3

Whoever's keeping notes, they can mark my first Jenny video as "What If Peter Parker Wasn't Spider-Man?"

Steve Ray

Zapp, your idea is drifting toward a vintage Twilight-Zone-style twist. After Disney negotiates long-term sponsorship to have Jenny interact with the parkgoing public, drawing enough visitors to visibly improve revenue on announced appearance days, the marketing execs decide to cash in by adding "Internet Famous Blogger" as a new lookalike cast position.... And soon they have a dozen "Internet Famous Blogger" Jenny impersonators working at *every* park, the very first "Disney Meta-Princess," with people studying all her videos, trying to get the voice and humor style pitch perfect for the tourists.

Steve Ray

How does a weighted blanket outperform a quilt, or multiple blankets? Is it heavy without keeping the sleeper too warm?

Steve Ray

No stream could ever water down her wit / Nor dead air make her observations stale / There are more Topics to be Rambled on / Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

Steve Ray

It would be far crueler to *not* mock the Children of Wattpad, and leave them with delusions of competence. And Our Hostess isn't Jigsaw -- she doesn't kidnap the Wattpad authors, chain them to chairs, and force them to watch the mockery.

Steve Ray

The podcast “How Did This Get Made” had Beastly as their subject shortly after that video too. It was recorded live, so it could have been made before Jenny’s video.

Alive_in_tucson

Once you start streaming, you should definitely play Defunct. If I could describe it in as few words as possible, I would say "BB-8, but fast."

Dillon Enarson

I'm not crazy excited for Jeff the Killer 2 over any other video or anything, but I feel like you really should make it just so you don't have to keep mentioning it in literally every ramble.

Lily Friedman

I love the theme park content, so I wouldn't be bitter at all about some Patreon funds going towards those.

R.G. Nairam

I made a Patreon account only to give Jenny money. The name seemed like a fitting tribute.

Jerry Nicholson

The RPO for girls video was your first video I saw, which instantly got me to subscribe to your channel. I thought it was a good, quick intro to your style of humour, so moving on to your long-form videos afterwards wasn't too intimidating. Like some of the folks above, I put longer, more relaxed videos on my phone to fall asleep to, and yours fit the bill great for that. Speaking of sleep, what weighted blanket did you end up getting and from where? I take way too much sleeping pills, so I'm hoping something like that will help me cut down on the drugs. I don't know anyone else with one, so I might as well ask a reviewer I trust.

¹¡íÁ·¥úGáB½5@±t3

It's either that or Gene Nicholson, I think. Actually, Johnny Nicholson is also an option that I thought of just then.

Shaun Cheah

Angrily clicking. Angrily listening to the video in its entirety, angrily subscribing, angrily supporting through patreon

Neil Dutton

Strange Aeons performed a very enjoyable evisceration of Onision’s book.

Stuart Payne

I watch the longer videos a lot, because they are really good White Noise to me. They are the perfect level of engagement for when I need to do some boring stuff on my computer, and want something on a small screen in the sidebar. I get distracted by Music, and actual white noise is not enough for me, but being told something funny and interesting, but still familiar, in a pleasant tone for 40mins engages enough of my brain to let the rest focus on organizing stuff.

Sarah

Even if they don’t get across every point, I really enjoy your two-Jenny skits. The Suicide Squad video made the point about the absurdity of the reasoning for gathering the squad that even defenders of the film could follow. The videos are funny and effective, if not exhaustive.

Joe Joe

The Halloween anecdote was so good! Were you wearing the Snoke costume?

Luis

There will probably be a new Star Wars trailer within the next couple weeks, maybe wait until then.

Chris Dearing

I was going to post something very similar. I really appreciate her too, I'm also dealing with depression and sometimes watch her if I need to be cheered up. She has such a likable personality and it seems like she can make any topic funny and interesting.

Dave

I use the Rode NT-USB for making videos, with how your video is framed it's perfect, it's not excellent at long distance but for your videos I think it's ideal. Great video as usual!

Jordan Middler

Seconding Blue Snowball as a good brand for mics.

Mia Diiorio

I love the skits as well. I wish there were more of them.

Sean Kelly

I finally joined the Patreon, I found you through Movie fights, I think I've watched all of your content now and all of it is entertaining. I hope you do more Movie fights, it's back to three competitors and the chairs now so it's more relaxed again. I thought the Purge video was hilarious. Cam is good and I haven't heard any crackle. Looking forward to watching you stream. On Twitch?

Dave

Great ramble, as always! :D I thought the reason your "RPO for girls" clip didn't get as much views as all the other ones was probably the thumbnail? I'm sure more people click on it when they see the youtuber's face. More theme park videos would definitely be awesome, I hope you get to do something like Pandora again and that other viewers appreciate it, too! Also I love that you mentioned "you're a bad car". Guess I'm not the only fan still thinking about how great that bit was. ^^ Still would love to use that idea in a short story, but the way you elaborated on stolen ideas, I guess you're not into that.

Tino

Same

Josh Liam

My guess as to why the longer videos do better than short ones is because if other fans are anything like me, I will put on one of your videos in bed to listen to while falling asleep, and I don't want to have to change videos after a 5 or 10 minute video ends. I enjoy your short videos, but I definitely watch them fewer times, whereas I've probably watched the Escape From Tomorrow video like a dozen times.

Corin Cerami

I've been watching your videos for about a year and just became a patron; this is the first ramble I've been here for on time. I really appreciate you, Jenny. I suffer intense depression and anxiety. Whenever I'm anxious, being able to turn to your channel and do nothing but laugh for 45 minutes is one of my great comforts. Been watching your channel all year and this is a great wrap up. You're definitely my favorite YouTuber and I'm so happy to be supporting you!

brody viszka

Jenny's friend, Bailey Meyers, does a YouTube series called "GooseDrunks", where she reads Goosebumps books while drinking heavily. She has a similar sense of humor to Jenny, so you might like it

Andrew Zimmer

PS by "thing" I mean performer, obvi. :^)

Tim Ruckle

Glad you had a good year! You are a unique talent, and I always enjoy your work, no matter what the subject matter. I'm sorry the Screen Junkies gig didn't work out, simply because it got more of your work "out there" gave us different aspects of your chops (more extemporaneous wit, for instance, even if less of your fantastic writing and editing). If I could make a request for 2019, more of the performative skits. I knew you said you don't like them as much, and think they may be too dorky, but they are *not*, you are amazing in them. and I LOVE me some Jenny skits. Anyhoo, you are the one and only thing I've felt motivated to support on patreon, and I *really* appreciate your hard work.

Tim Ruckle

I live in Amsterdam and would totally be your camera person at Efteling. I haven’t been, but it’s on my list for this summer :)

Devin Beliveau

2018 was the year I discovered Jenny's channel, so that was cool. I kept seeing the Crimes of Grindelwald video as a recommendation (I'm guessing because I was watching Lindsay Ellis videos) and while I was wary that it would be one of those obnoxious ranting complaint videos, the giant porg in the background drew me in. And of course, it's Quality Jenny Content, so I stuck around and started watching her other videos, and now here I am.

Mario

The whole "theme of the movie as meta-comment on why the movie is bad" is one of my favourite recurring bits in your videos.

Gavin Hayes

Not at all how I thought "2018 Year in Review" would go and FREEGAN thankful! I so much thought "world year in review" for the poll ... learning to trust. The Goosebumps story -- burst me laughing -- fantastic! Good year, here. Quality looks and sounds fine. Cool Paper Towns catch by that Beastly clip. Can't wait to see this year's series.

Dundough Breadbox

Idk which one was my favorite but I found your videos when infinity war hot take went on the trending page. I thought using the Twilight Zone as a way to explain your opinions was really clever and funny! Can't wait for your next ones :)

Sabrina Gaul

Jenny mentions "book youtube" in this video, and I really do enjoy her videos where she reads through a bad book a lot. What are some of the book youtube channels people would recommend to a fan of Jenny's videos?

Richard Morrall

When I initially started watching you, your forces of destiny video made me subscribe. I think it's one of your best: the criticism is sharp, constructed well, and conveys the failures of toy design and toy marketing clearly (which I'd never thought about before). It's more "video essay" like compared to your other stuff, but I think it's good by video essay standards as well as normal takedown video standards

Ewin

Regarding your Last Jedi video, I honestly think it's really sad that some people can't appreciate your videos if they disagree with your opinion. I happen to like Rogue One, Ready Player One and the Crimes of Grindlewald, but I still found your commentary on them hilariously entertaining. Anyway, 2018 was a great year. Dark Rituals was probably my favorite video, but there were a lot of amazing videos so it would be hard to choose just one as being the best. Keep up the good work :)

Dr. Kirill Hitoshi Lopez

Hi Jenny, thanks for the video and the full year of great content. Looking forward to more. Mic Recommendation: I don't have any experience (as a musician and recording engineer) with USB mics, but can definitely recommend some good XLR mics. They'll probably be a bit more robust and last a bit longer, even if they need a bit more setup and might be a bit more expensive. A good solid choice would be the Audio Technica AT2020, which I think is about the same price as the Yeti on its own. You'll need an XLR mic cable ($15-20 online) and an audio interface (a soundcard in a box, basically) to plug it into your laptop; I've used the Focusrite 'Scarlett' interfaces for years and they're super simple and sound great. The smallest one is the 'Scarlett Solo', which is a straight-up one-input device for minimal messing-around. Looks like it retails in the UK for about £80, so I guess about the same in $. Throw in a pair of headphones to monitor and you're good to go! Hope that's helpful! Thanks again, JP x

BassPope

When you talked about the new camera and maybe things looking different, my impression was that the lighting had changed, with shadows much more noticeable. But maybe if I hadn't been primed to look for it, I wouldn't have noticed? (A quick check of recent videos suggests that some previous videos have shadows, but it varies depending on whether you film during daytime or night time.) I don't know.

David Barry

Just wanted to say I found you through screen junkies and you are the best creator in my opinion, also I agreed with you on TLJ.

Nick G

People can't reference a crime in a video?! Good lord, doesn't that place huge restrictions on political or news commentators?

Robert Secundus

May do star wars bingo for the predictions you put on your star wars bingo.

Manon Hale

Jenny, have you though about what streaming might do to these rambles or do you think they can coexist? With all the "dead air" to fill during a stream, they seem like they'd sorta become redundant.

I haven't noticed any crackle

berry-ma

Are you her male alter ego?

Andrew Zimmer

New camera looks great! Love that you re-watch some of your old videos too! I have noticed slight crackles here and there, but nothing to ruin the videos. I can't even remember what videos I might have heard them in and also the noise might be from the headphones I use at the gym or my computer speakers. Poor Shark Wahlberg was belly up the whole video :(

Luis

I haven't noticed any crackle, though I do tend to have you on in the background. There wasn't anything noticeable in this one

David Snyder

"The Christmas Prince" was probably my favorite. One reason I love the topics that come out of left field! Didn't see that one coming and was pleasantly surprised.

Sean Kelly

I love you Jenny, but you should stop ridiculing children on Wattpad. It's cruel.

Jerry Nicholson

i also came via booktube! i just really wanted to know what the Worst Book was

Erin Young

I'm recording my video audio and my current audiobook on the Blue Snowball USB mic, it's been really clear and crisp so far, can recommend it.

Jonathan Baldie

Once Disney contracts you to wander their parks and interact with the public as the ultimate Disney fan meta-brand, you will achieve millennial gig economy self-actualization, and implode into a four-dimensional internet cube bearing mouse ears, avocado toast, and Uber coupons.

Zapp Rowsdower

I think the Troll review was the first video I saw too, for the same reason! It was either that or Insanity, but either way I'm happy I'm not the only person who migrated from booktube

Karla Blinoff

I don't have details on mics, but you might want to check if your credit card gives extended warranty protection. It looks like Blue Yeti offers a 2 year warranty, and most credit cards will offer some additional warranty time (manufacturer period x2, +1 year, +2 years, etc)

Rory Byrne-Dugan

What’s funny for me is that I first started watching because of the Beastly and Opposite World videos and didn’t realize you liked the Last Jedi too until later on.

Alex Clemens

Great video. Was kinda hoping you would talk about writing for Playboy and how that came about and if we can expect any more articles from you, but I understand it can be hard to know what to talk about in these rambles.

Eric MacMillan

I really like the videos where you just talk about new movie releases, idk I honestly go back to them often when I am thinking about the movie again (honestly, I already did it like 3 times with Crimes of Grindelwald alone). Like the way you discuss them is very unique; the format is so simple and it depends on like your personality but you can always follow through (I like them so much I almost considered doing some myself tbh). Even if you haven't seen the movie they are still like so freaking funny to watch

Maju Reis

Women age 18-24 rise up!

Karla Blinoff

Yay! Last night I discovered I'd missed last month's ramble, so after more than two months without a ramble, I get two new rambles within 24 hours

matt

You’re not wrong about the booktube thing! I first saw your “worst book ever” video in the sidebar after watching a couple videos about bad books, but it was too vague for me to click on at the time, haha. Then your greatest showman video popped up on my feed and I was like “ok... I hated that movie, this has extreme potential” and I’ve been such a fan ever since, haha. I can’t believe I only started watching your videos in January!! What a year! Hope you keep having fun making videos :)

Pocket & Locket

got off work early, and there's a new ramble waiting for me? happy freakin' saturday!

anthony grey

when you said your old camera was a Canon Rebel I very much expected your new camera to be a Canon Resistance

Spalfos

This channel will continue to grow. Not much else like it.

Sean Kelly

You always make me smile kid, I know you hate pet names but I'm almost dead so everyone under fifty is a kid, but its true, no matter how bad things are you always make me smile

Santee
