November Ramble: Jenny Style Guide

Hey-o, sorry this one took so long, it was a bit of extra editing coupled with my anxiety that it was extremely boring and trying to punch it up because I didn't feel like I had anything insightful to say on the topic.

So here is a video on fashion, for those of you very interested in fashion!

November Ramble: Jenny Style Guide

Comments

I'm really into fashion and a woman, but wow, I didn't know people cared about specific styles for different seasons? I always just wear whatever the I feel like and wont be too cold/too warm, colors and style be damned

Ghostfellow

Alert!! Tyra banks is opening a theme park in California. Possibly a perfect video subject? I think so

As someone who used to work at Forever 21 let me say it was so frustrating. The company would stuff the racks so full that it was inevitable something would fall and then I'd get in trouble for it being messy :/

Sabrina Gaul

lol wore my new fitted grey v neck sweater to work today on casual Friday and I got 3 compliments Jenny was right :D

Luis

I think you should do Jeff the Killer video and do it with a goth theme outfit and makeup.

If you're looking for orthopedic-ish comfy shoes, EarthShoes are great!! I think they've gotten a little trendier in style these days but the EarthShoes of my childhood were woefully and wonderfully ugly. I used to have a pair of EarthShoe sneakers that I think were supposed to look like they were printed with brownstone masonry but it just looked like they were covered in pictures of potatoes.

Sarah Hubbard

Do you have any strong views on gray v-necks?

Shred Cadmium

I’m in the frustrating position of being a dude who tries to dress in interesting ways, but is constantly stymied by the lack of decent options. It doesn’t get super hot or super cold where I live, in Auckland, New Zealand, and I overheat pretty easily regardless, so layering is always a battle between style and comfort. If any guys here do want some advice, I’m in a decent position to give it, since I’m gay and therefore pay attention to what guys wear while also having firsthand knowledge of the limitations of male fashion generally. It’s mostly about having good staples and then adding one kinda interesting item (colourful/patterned/etc) as a point of difference. I also think confidence is a huge issue for guys looking to buy new clothes. Until very recently I’d always think ‘yeah this is cool, but I couldn’t pull it off’ which is usually bs as long as it fits you well and you like it on its own. It is potentially a valid concern if you like something but have nothing to wear it with, but if you use that reasoning to avoid buying any new things then you’ll never change your style at all.

George Dodd

Considering your usual humor style, I was expecting this ramble to be more or less a joke. And while the sarcastic approach is always entertaining, it was a pleasant surprise to instead hear a frank rundown of what you wear and why. I hope you don't consider the finished product to be boring. As a mostly t-shirt and jeans dude, I thought it was great and learned some things I otherwise would never have considered.

Josh Draper

I thought "A-zos" was Los Angeles hipster slang for Amazon, a portmanteau of "A-mazon" and "Be-zos."

Steve Ray

I dress like a NPC, sold colors and jeans, so people will either leave me alone completely or come up and ask me about quests they are on...

Steve Ray

Can I get some brand recs/links for the perfect jean skirt?

That sounds easy to serialize into little chunks.

Steve Ray

Is the December ramble poll coming soon?

Eric MacMillan

People shouldn't get the wrong impression from our fierce, fair advocacy -- the ATC loves *all* of the Rambles 100%!

Steve Ray

Hey, just so the record is clear: the "overlapping categories" theory video was created by some Harvard Scientist, a neutral, third-party expert on topics. It never occurred to us that Harvard University might release videos with math errors. The ATC didn't sponsor his research or his video, but we revere Science and were excited to spread the word about the latest news in Ramble Voting. Looking back, we clearly were over-reliant on his findings, and we regret any confusion that may have been sown about the November Ramble results. We, too, were misled.

Steve Ray

Exactly! There's nothing that can be left out or skimmed easily. Every page has a new bizarre action which either affects the plot, is funny, or both

Jenny Nicholson

The tours department is actually non-union. Not that I would fear termination over something like that... but I would assume it would hurt my consideration for different tours, which each have to be auditioned for and are sort of competitive

Jenny Nicholson

And the light shining in through the blue can still hurt?

Steve Ray

I wish I could wear kid’s sizes. They’re cheaper, and comic characters and Star Wars forever! Also, Lego hands? Add to cart!

Alive_in_tucson

What I most love about Jenny's videos is I always learn a new word, phrase, or concept. From the style ramble I really like the notion of somehow being less human by dressing in drab plain clothing. Like I always knew about expressing yourself through what you wear, but the opposite being true is very interesting and something that never occurred to me!

Luis

Oh Jenny, I feel you on the light sensitive eyes! I have almost no outdoor wedding pictures because I COULD NOT keep my eyes open without them watering. In the few pictures I do have my pupils are pin points and I look like an alien.

You have my support

Katie Gogerty

Should we create an Anti-Spring Coalition? We’ll plan protests between the vernal equinox and summer solstice, being sure to dress in layers. Fall is really killing the transitional season game, an embarrassment of riches between fashion and holidays.

T. Fazekas

I thought this fashion video was great. I liked it. Im glad you did it. It was "lit". :)

jonathan bradburry

I thought you were talking about Assos at first and was hoping there would be a possible future video talking about your rad bikes.

¹¡íÁ·¥úGáB½5@±t3

As someone who has read the Jeff the Killer sequel in its entirety, I completely understand and sympathize with Jenny putting it off. She is absolutely right, it feels like every other page is a pivotal point in the story and it will be very difficult to summarize. That being said I am very excited for Jenny's analysis and when it comes out I will be absolutely tickled

Karla Blinoff

I am 100% on board with the war on pants. They're uncomfortable for most female body types and wearing a dress or skirt makes putting an outfit together much more easily. Also, tshirt ideas would be a tshirt blanket, a tshirt pillow, tshirt tote bag

Katie Gogerty

I just saw the first ever "Millennial Falcon" episode and there you're already saying you're a texture person, crazy! Great video, as always! :) Never heard a better "Howdy".

Tino

Wow those Disneyland folks really deserve a good collective bargaining agreement. You shouldn’t have to worry about asking for reasonable accommodations at work.

To me the real point of this video was so Jenny could show the blobfish and me the person in the audience can be like "oh blobfish, I love blobfish!" Also, thanks for giving a shout-out to this old-timey settler's home state :)

Dr. Kirill Hitoshi Lopez

finally watched the video. stocking up on grey v neck sweaters (been meaning to anyway). happy new year jenny and everyone! loved the video, and it was even better than expected, regardless of your doubts. good luck finding those replacement loafers... they were cute!

anthony grey

Ok, 13 minutes in: Shocking denim revelations; Spring, JUST THE WORST; Pale redness; Shoes, unclear does Spring even deserve shoes?

Neil Dutton

7 minutes in summary: Pants,NO; Spring,BAD; Texture, DEPENDS THERE'S SOME NUANCE TO THIS ONE. Ok, back to it.

Neil Dutton

I went to a dark dusty library to do some research and found that "[a] vampire would not show up on a digital camera image, as the elements used to capture the pixels involve light receptive cells that are functionally the equivalent to mirrors,"* so I think we're OK as that'd obviously make appearing in and editing these videos a little tricky. Phew! 😅🚫🧛🏻‍♀️ *https://www.everything2.com/title/Do+vampires+show+up+on+digital+cameras%253F

Shred Cadmium

We should have a patron meetup with Jenny at Comicon next year, and everybody wears gray v-neck sweaters.

Matthew McCoy

Oh the one from the hobbies ramble? It looks so cool and even though I'm a 6'1" "rubenesque" guy I'd totally wear something like that.

Luis

Texture and hats. The hats come as no surprise, obvious in many photos, but the texture choices really hit me unexpectedly. Especially no smooth items. Loved that one item suggestion for men! Way more entertaining ramble to information ramble ratio than the topic hinted. Worth it, thank you.

Dundough Breadbox

What facebook pictures? I'm only seeing two - the cover and the profile photo.

Dillon Enarson

Great to be surprised by a discussion of voting systems; I agree with your intuition on it not being correct to add the related topics together under the new system. For a bewildering 5000+ words on various strategic subtleties with approval voting, I recommend the Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Approval_voting

David Barry

Question, are you still thinking about doing a twitch channel? I remember you mentioned that as a possibility like six or seven rambles back but I don't think you've said anything about it since then.

Andrew Zimmer

Would it make sense to split the Jeff the Killer book into multiple videos? Is it the kind of thing that has good stopping points, or would it just feel weird and incomplete?

Steven Clark

I'm so glad this topic won, it was a great video! I love the style of the A-line skirts with tights but don't wear them, now I feel like maybe I should go for it? I do look forward to the next Jeff the Killer video if/when you decide to do it but totally understand your reasons for delay.

Malyssa Hinds

We should really test this out once and for all! 😁 Maybe one of the Highest Fathomers could suggest "Readings from the Telephone Directory" next time the topic-survey goes out... ☎️📖👍

Shred Cadmium

We don't want you to stress about these rambles. Never feel obligated to force yourself to ramble about a topic you don't want to. That being said, I'm pretty sure most of us would watch your take on reading a phone book.

Eli Bergsma

Not sure where Jenny has got to but I enjoyed the Raccoon Style Guide. Partial mollification for the ATC 👍🦝

Shred Cadmium

I think you did a great job with a kind of unusual ramble request! For work outfits I feel like the only real difference between seasons is short vs long sleeves.

James Murphy

"Extremely boring"? Jenny, you worry too much! Even as a guy, it never felt like it was dragging or getting dull. I totally feel you on the texture thing too, I'm just a simple hoodie, t-shirt and jeans guy (anything more and I feel way overdressed) but I tend to gravitate towards materials on the "higher end" (cashmere, tencel/modal, various silk blends, etc) just so I'm not covered head-to-toe in samey feeling cotton.

I love ASOS too! Even as a plus-sized girl, they have super cute stuff (which is rare). I've gotten some of my favorite dresses from them.

Bri Cousineau

This was really interesting as someone who only wears T-shirts and jeans every day. I want to develop some sort of style but skirts and dresses are always too long for me and I’m very lazy. I’m gonna take some pointers from here though, I think your style is really cute :)

Persephone

Also, glad to hear the lightsaber video get mentioned! It might not happen, but it sounded like a cool idea and I hope it's revisited when the next movie comes around.

Daniel Anderson

This was really informative and the picture examples were great! Hope you find those loafers!

Luis

Good luck on the media pass! They might be more likely to award that if you promise your camera person will be in a Porg costume.

Harry McDonald

The "shopping in the kids section thing" spoke to me on like a spiritual level, I wear a boys L/XL at target and they have SUCH good t shirts, they're so much better than the adult ladies' t-shirts and they're always like WAY cheaper too, especially for star wars and other like pop culture stuff, I shop there all the time, I got no shame

t.c. austin

My best friend was an assistant manager at Forever 21 for a few years and he hated it. He said the employee discount sucks too compared to other retail stores.

I am opposite worlds Jenny; texture is also a huge defining issue for me when it comes to clothes (and food and furniture and I guess the world in general), but I haaaaaaaaaate ribbed/heavy-knit textures and need my clothes to be smooth. Not necessarily to the point of a silk-like fabric, but something like the synthetic material that Under Armour typically uses is just right.

Daniel Anderson

I became a patron like 15 minutes before this came out. Sick! (That makes me sound like a surfer surfs up)

Agreed! I am a guy who wears t-shirts and jeans pretty much every day, so hearing how the other side lives is interesting to me, for whatever odd reason.

Matthew McCoy

Jenny, do you know where you got your fish blouse that you've worn a few times in videos?

Flora

was the book Just A Killer?

UK73

Needed this Jenny, thank you.

Hearing people talk about their "style" is bizarrely interesting to me, as someone whose style consists of wearing the same thing every day since 2003. Having a unique sense of style that incorporates, like...blouses and shit is something I find to be a wholly foreign experience. I admire it, and yet have no desire to emulate it myself. I had to laugh when you lamented having "too many t-shirts" and then later stated it was about half a drawer-full. I recently moved and forced myself to thin down my t-shirt collection...from 339 to 215.

The Doom Merchant

As usual your fears that this wouldn’t be interesting are unfounded! Another great ramble, thanks Jenny. My favorite look was the Halloween orange skirt at the pumpkin patch because it’s a cool skirt and felt like you dressed to match the surroundings. Baller move.

Eric MacMillan

Re: your sensitivity to light--it may be because you have blue eyes since it you have less pigment in your irises.

Christine Gerding

I’m on a Disney cruise and I just connected to wifi for this to be my first notification - yay yay yay!

Jenna Cummings

My boyfriend is literally wearing a grey V-neck sweater right now. I feel like such a winner :) Thanks for the rambles!

Very excited to see this pop up, but it would have been awesomely meta to not release it and just say “that’s my style” 😀

GHOST HOST

ChiralSpiral

Hooray for late Christmas gifts!

Chilly

Thanks Jenny, good work.

Jonathan Baldie

It's finally here, woo!
