Glad you mentioned diary of the dead. Seriously underrated Romero movie imo. Loved most of his work though sadly cant say I’ve seen land of the dead because everyone says it was bad. For a while I didnt watch day of the dead for the same reasons but that one was also a banger. I do want to do a marathon of all his zombie movies in sequential order one day.
Also found footage is also one of my favorite horror genres despite most of them being bad. Should check out the v/h/s franchise and rec

Although Jenny said she isn't interested in the Halloween movies, I think she would really enjoy Halloween Resurrection. It's certainly bad, but it's one of the most fun movies in the franchise. It was made in 2002 and it's the most 2002 thing you've ever seen, including reality shows, the early internet, a gratuitous role for a rapper who can't act, and even a found footage component!

I like the Resident Evil movies for the fun, slick way they mash up my favorite sci-fi and horror tropes. For me, 2 was the worst one (just too cheesy) and 5 is my fave because of the crazy concept and the way it brings back settings and characters from the previous movies.

Exorcist is one of those movies people are afraid to criticise, but I think it was lame. I think that if you don't believe in demonic possession, and are not a child, it doesn't hold up.

Clue is in the "Old Dark House" genre. Old Dark House movies are about people staying at a remote house and being picked off by an unknown killer; usually the tone is spooky but comedic. The Cat & The Canary is the classic of the genre and has been filmed multiple times, but I suppose The House on Haunted Hill is better known at this point. If there is a Sadistic Millionaire involved, then we are looking at a "The Most Dangerous Game" situation.

Old millionaire invites people to a dinner party and forces them to play his sadistic game is, I believe (although I’ve never seem the movie), the plot of Murder By Death. Which, amazingly, stars Truman Capote. Although i have heard that the movie overall did not age well lol.

Have you ever seen the original Old Dark House movie? It's old, from the 1930s, I think, but it's interesting, first because it gave a name to an entire genre of movies that take place in spooky old dark houses (of course), and it set a lot of the tropes of that genre, like the group of strangers trapped in an old mansion on a dark and stormy night. Second, it's interesting because there is nothing supernatural happening in this house - there are no ghosts, monsters, or jump scares - the movie is creepy because the humans in the house are creepy people. It's sort of like what you describe about a general sense of wrongness. It's psychological. The people who own this house are seriously disturbed people, and they are the ones who make the house dangerous. It also leaves you with some questions about the history of the people in this house. There are some disturbing things in their pasts that are only half explained or even just hinted at, leaving the details up to your imagination. The movie was based on a book, and I bought a copy to see if they explain more about some of these things in the book, but they don't. The sinister hints about this family's past are just supposed to make you wonder. When you see the scene with the old man in it and he talks about his children, there's one more child than anyone else has mentioned. I don't think this child of his is named, but he apparently died young for reasons which no one ever explicitly explains ... except for maybe Saul. Saul is crazy, but if you take some of his ravings literally, he might actually be naming his unnamed brother and telling you what happened to him.

I also like Blair Witch. I almost never watch horror, I'm too squeamish, even a little blood freaks me out, but another horror movie I liked a lot was Hell House LLC. The first one was really great if you like movies that build slowly. Also, it was one of those films that made it worth extra viewings because you can see little things in the background or hear things that you didn't understand the first time. The two sequels weren't very good, what I liked about the first one is that they still left it very ambiguous what was really going on.

“The Blair Witch Project” and “The Witch” are probably my favourite horror movies of all time, so I’m glad they got such glowing reviews from you in this video.
For my sins, I’m a fan of the “Resident Evil” movies, even though I know they’re objectively terrible… it’s just that the first one combined so many things I genuinely love (zombies, metal music, Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, and (fictional) evil corporations), so I’ll never get tired of rewatching it. The second one was also a lot of fun, as you say, but they got less appealing for me once they moved from a lab/urban setting to a post-apocalyptic wasteland…
Regardless, I now have a list of previously unseen movies I need to look up, so thank you for the recommendations! :)
Also, I reaffirm my interest in seeing a “Jeff the Killer 2” video someday… it’s what the people want!

When a story is told through letters, like in Bram Stoker's Dracula, that's "epistolary," but is there a general term for a story told through [found footage / ruins / rubbish]?
"Documentary"?
"Investigative"?
"Forensic"?
"Archaeological"?

You mentioned in this video really liking the "finding audio recordings" method of storytelling, such as in bioshock. One of my favourite recent games was Horizon: Zero Dawn. It takes place in a far distant post apocalypse where humans have reformed into tribes and absolutely no one has any knowledge of the way the world used to be or how it became the way it is. Basically the entirety of the games story is told by exploring old ruins of civilization and finding audio recordings, slowly piecing bit by bit how the world ended.
Not expecting you to play it, but I thought you might find the concept interesting so I figured I'd mention it.

There's the 1934 'Ninth Guest' - the prototype of the crazed rich guy's murder party genre! It was actually done before Agatha Christie's very similar "Ten Little Indians" (aka Then There Were None") - the 1970s version had Ollie Reed and an awesome soundtrack by an Italian composer.

Tarantino's "The Man from Hollywood" (the last act of Four Rooms) and Hitchcock's "The Man from the South" kind of fit into the creepy millionaire trope. I haven't seen Hitchcock's version but it's supposed to be more suspense/horror than Tarantino's take. Also Happy Death Day (2017) merges slasher horror with my absolute favorite trope, Groundhog Day time looping!

If you aren't already, carry a handgun and be prepared to use it. Self defense is a human right. It's perfectly normal and prudent. Tens of millions Americans do it every day. Don't let California brainwash you into thinking you don't have natural, civil and constitutionally protected rights.

The engagement in these comments has been pretty fantastic, so here's my contribution:
In college there was a pyjama party movie night event and the movie chosen was Quarantine, which is a found footage zombie movie set inside this one apartment complex. It was very enjoyable but also extremely predictable, I remember that I'd called what was going to happen next so often that a dude nearby was like "have you seen this before?" and I was like, no, you just get a kind of intuition for this sort of thing after absorbing enough zombie-and-found-footage-related content.
Anyway apparently it's a remake of [REC], which is a Spanish film and was probably much better based on what I've read, so I suppose I'd recommend anyone who hasn't seen either to watch that version first, or perhaps only.

I guess they also kinda count as witch movies. They make for excellent Halloween movie marathons! There is a silly German Paranormal Activity on Netflix called "The Presence". Oh, I've also got a movie for you in the "Deranged Millionaire Makes People Play a Sadistic Game"-genre: "The Game" from 1984. Seen this on the Shudder app this morning and the description pretty much fit your genre to a T, so I had to watch it. It's goofy, weird and cheap... oh man, is it ever cheap. While it won't be for everyone, it's definitely in that very specific genre of yours.

Creepy millionaire host feels like a throwback to the gothic murder mystery, for sure. The second half of Dracula (once the story moves to his castle) is kind of like that, too. Most Dangerous Game fits as an early film example. Sleuth (the one with Michael Cane and Lawrence Olivier) kind of falls into it, too, iirc, though it's more thriller than horror. Also - have you watched The Ritual on Netflix? I was shocked at how good it was.

When I first saw Warm Bodies I felt like an idiot because I totally didn't pick up on the Romeo/Juliet thing until literally the very end when they're sitting together & talking about his name & then I was like: "wait a minute...". To be fair, I've never read/seen the play so I didn't get the more subtle hints at all. // & in re: Red Eye: I definitely remember that movie. I was way too young/sheltered when I saw it & was traumatized by that bit with the pen (I won't spoil it but people who've seen it should know). Not an exaggeration: I legitimately still get shivers thinking about it even though I haven't seen it since it came out.

I'm a bit of a horror film hater as I scare easily, but will happily read horror novels. Absolutely loved the Shining as a novel (well, not loved, but appreciated) and am also a fan of the Hannibal series of the books. I'm always surprised when people have said they've read them and don't like them but at the same time if you have a psychology degree I can imagine they are fairly annoying. I will admit though that they have really dragged the crime genre down though as every book/film/TV show now has to have a hyper-intelligent high functioning villain Hannibal-type,

world war z is definitely worth a watch, way better than i expected based on the trailer. it was plagued by bad press over its reshot 3rd act, but i found it hella enjoyable.
i would also like to express my love of the saw films. i think the scripts were always very clever and it was a quality franchise the whole way through. darren lynn bousman (2-4) was the best director that franchise had. you can see them struggle without him, 5 and 7 being the low points (the director of 7 didn’t even want to be there, and was forced to out of spite).
but 6 is a wonderful indictment of the health insurance industry. and my personal favorite is 3, mainly for its focus on the amanda young character played by shawnee smith.
also jenny, you once mentioned the idea of possibly starting a separate horror-based channel, and i just want to say yes please do that

"The Halloween Costumes Nobody Wanted 2018" was totally going to be my suggestion if wasn't going to be on the main channel, only I was going to ask that you also include your dog in the costume showcase because why not? ...on to the ramble.
So many recs in there, I'll definitely be watching Diary of the Dead when I get up later. Much appreciated! Wasn't expecting it to be almost exclusively modern horror for some reason though, no idea where I got that from. Now I have nothing against modern horror (I had fun with Happy Death Day, which I think was the last one I remember really liking), but the late 80s early 90s VHS era is where I developed my horror movie tastes so it does lean heavy on the slasher genre, franchise films and FX showpieces that are all a touch on the gory side. Much like you, I don't grade horror like I would a non-horror movie or ever re-watch most of them. I only need to have fun a few times during the runtime and I'll call that a win, it honestly doesn't take very much. The ending of Saw though (when it all came together), sent chills up my spine... I couldn't remember the last time a film made me do that.
Please don't waste your time on World War Z, rewatch League of Extraordinary Gentlemen until you return to your senses instead.
Also: confirming industry rumors, Jenny? Now there's some exclusive content!

Sorry you are having some difficulty with things, I hope it's temporary. Have a safe trip...I can think of two other horror films that have the plot of a rich person taking a bunch of people to a secluded location for some twisted game, "House on Haunted Hill" (both original and remake) and "April Fool's Day". If you want a non horror version, you can add "Murder by Death", which is a parody of detective films, in which a bunch of detectives are invited to a party to solve the host's murder by the host, before the murder (no, that doesn't make much sense to me either).

The conjuring and insidious movies are not in the same universe but they do both star Patrick Wilson. He's great but it makes it very confusing. As far as 'sadistic millionaire invites people to his mansion,' a few I can think of are And Then There Were None (never seen the movie version tho), Murder By Death, and Clue. None of these are really horror and the last two are almost more parody. I feel like a lot of the movies/books in this genre/plot are probably playing off Agatha Christie's work. Heck, Murder on the Orient Express is at least adjacent to the genre.

Two of the most horrifying films I've ever seen are Babe and Ghost. I'm a vegetarian but even if you're not the story in Babe, given its own norms, is terribly bleak while Ghost is something out of a medieval nightmare, with the bad guy dragged helplessly to damnation.

So, I’m not a horror movie person...the closest I come to watching those is The Sixth Sense. As a child I avoided horror films. Life was scary enough without seeing Freddy behind every tree, as I did after having to watch one of the Friday 13th films at a party. A lot of my favorite stuff is sci-fi horror: The Thing, The Fly, Alien, The Outer Limits and so on, but for some reason I can't really ever like horror unless it's one of those films that transcend the genre. Horror is exactly like jazz to me; all about the creative process and the 'craft', and just fucking tedious to enjoy. Totally welcome to tell me I'm an idiot and wrong about jazz.

100% agree about the Dawn of the Dead remake. I didn't care much for the original either, but for me it was mostly because the makeup effects didn't really age well (the zombies are kind of just painted a weird green color). And yeah, I could've done without the zombie baby, it just made be think about that ridiculous scene from Dead-Alive. As for other George A. Romero remakes, I actually liked the Night of the Living Dead from the early 90's more than the original as well. I mean, it's kind of cheesy because of the overacting but I enjoyed it. The Day of the Dead remake with Nick Cannon, though? Oof, that one was absolutely terrible. It really only shared the name but was otherwise something completely different...and terrible.

World War Z is one of my favourite books, I've read and re-read it so many times. The movie has pretty much nothing in common with the book except the title and the quote about Israeli intelligence agencies (but it's a pretty great quote so of all the things to keep, it's a decent choice). If the movie didn't ruin such great potential, it would be just north of mediocre. As it is, though, I kinda hate it for ruining our chances at a genuinely good adaptation of World War Z.

The special features on the DVD for the Thir13en Ghosts remake absolutely RULED! They had little featurettes for all 13 ghosts explaining their backstories and how they died and the menu screen for it was all cool-looking and everything. I think those featurettes were about 90% of the reason why I liked that movie. I haven’t seen them since the DVD came out so I have no idea if they hold up but 12-year-old thought it was hella sick.
Also, I REALLY miss those early days of DVDs when distributors would just pack every disc with whatever extra footage/documentaries/featurettes they had laying around and even create content specifically for the DVD. Major blockbuster releases still get them to a certain extant but I miss when that was just standard operating procedure for literally every movie that was released. The blu-ray for a crappy movie like Thir13en Ghosts wouldn’t have had nearly as much effort put into it today as it did for its DVD in 2002. Nowadays I’m lucky if a blu-ray comes with a deleted scene and feel like they went all out if it has a 5-minute “behind the scenes.”

For some reason the way giant Porg is lying on its back like that made me think it was gonna like pop up for a jump scare at some point. Even though I was expecting it I still would have screamed, so thanks for sparing me the heart attack!

I have it, since it's always recommended for people who spend a lot of time looking at screens, but my impression is it's supposed to cut down on me seeing a glare while looking through them (ie at a laptop in a dim room, or for driving at night). I don't think it affects their cosmetic appearance from the front

Curious about the video, even though I've never watched a horror movie. Ever. Unless "The Gremlins" counts... Also, for all the theme park fans reading the comments: new black ride at Europa Park, with many (bad) animatronic dinos doing stuff like washing dishes and hanging clothes. Very bad. 10/10.

There's a coating you can get for glasses that makes them less reflective.

Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows is great! I’m glad someone finally said it. It’s one of my favs, too. I think Chris Stuckmann gave it an F. :-(

You gotta watch hereditary if you haven't seen it yet, absolutely terrifying.
