Incredibles 2 (and Brad Bird) and Theme

Incredibles 2 video is live!

I must admit I'm more looking forward to finishing the next one though.

Pamplemousse!

William McCarthy

Well, yeah, you're from that East Coast place, so naturally you want to give Hollywood a little payback for what they did to your hometown hero, Edison.

Steve Ray

Hollywood... blech!

Tom Bowling

Stuart Payne

"Brad Bird" has the initials "B.B." "Brad Bird" has 8 letters in his name. What cruel taunt is the universe preparing with all this?

Steve Ray

The art is clean and shows a lot of expression. I'm going to give it a chance and watch with an open mind. It's a shame that a lot of fans are already panning it just from viewing one teaser trailer.

Tom Bowling

Also, Mr. Gran, I don't think that admiration of hard work and tenacity is unique to capitalism or the free market. Hard workers are admired everywhere. As to equating "destined for greatness" with "inherited riches," I don't think that applies in the U.S. Currently, being destined for greatness has more to do with character, brains, talent, and relentlessness, and nobody resents folks who've won a genetic lottery; if anything, the visibly talented are usually saddled with an *expectation* that they'll do great things.

Steve Ray

I disagree, because Our Hostess's talent for movie analysis is at least 3 SD above the mean, she might be the only one who noticed. Brad Bird seems so sure that moviegoers are dumb hoi polloi, that he'll openly spit in their faces without fear of discovery or revenge, much like a bitter Mexican guide might greet American tour groups with, "Thank *God* I am finally seeing some Americans today! Heyyyy, putas! Heyyy, cabrons! If you want to experience the *real* Mexico, you gotta make that choice, lemme hear it!: Plata? O plomo?"

Steve Ray

I've heard that Star Wars: Resistance is essentially an ohmage to the original.

Steve Ray

Speaking of Disney animation, any thoughts about the Star Wars: Resistance trailer?

Tom Bowling

Egad! Are ya daft, man? Combining Cherry Coke with eleven herbs and spices makes a volatile mixture more deadly than the mustard gas Jerry used on the cratered fields of Verdun!

Tom Bowling

Like in the movie Major League, you need to counter the curse with a chicken sacrifice. Have someone dump a KFC family bucket over your head - that should do the trick.

Brian Bakke

Yeah she’s not exactly a “good guy” but I find her really interesting nonetheless. She’s kinda mysterious and her motivations for helping Syndrome are never made completely clear. It does seem like her change of heart comes from finding out Mr. Incredible has a family - it finally humanizes superheros for her.

11:17 How can you deny this woman her sequel, Brad Bird? How?!

Pixar had a show w this gallery in Alhambra. They have a Ratatouille piece and some other concept stuff and more finished pieces for perusing. https://www.gallerynucleus.com/detail/21980/

nel

But wasn't that after she already helped Syndrome kill dozens of superheroes before. The only difference with the Incredibles family, is that there were kids involved this time.

Blue Corn

Not mentioned in the video, and perhaps obvious, but Mirage pretty much serves that exact purpose in Incredibles 1. She’s a “normal” who helps the supers in their moment of need, demonstrating the value of brave and moral folks of all levels of ability.

Kathy H.

I went to see this movie today. A lady accidentally dumped a bucket size Cherry Coke all over me. My shirt, shorts, socks and chucks were saturated with soda pop. I had to leave during the Fantastic Beast preview. I don't think I'm going to try to see it again. There's some bad juju with this flick.

Tom Bowling

good

Haven't watched it in a while, but I wonder if there's some subtly comparable thematic thread in Bird's Mission Impossible movie? Tom Cruise is as close to a genetically blessed ageless ubermensch as exists in the real world, I guess, now that Prince is dead - "You were *destined* to accept these impossible missions, Ethan. You were *born* to scale the Burj Khalifa building with no harness - Simon Pegg's not going to do it."

David Potter

That's so odd; I saw it when I was in the Netherlands a month ago and that's right next door to Germany. International release schedules are strange.

Shaun Cheah

I laughed hard - "I liked your rat movie, it's my favorite Pixar Movie". Then casually tosses Remy over the shoulder to the wall.

Brian Bakke

Flawless as always Jenny!

Kelsey R Howell

It always brings a smile to my face when I see Giant Porg in the background chilling like that in some of the videos like you know it's going to be extra special. Also think I'll check out Tomorrowland now.

Luis

Ratatouille is the best Pixar movie 100%

QuailMan420

The whole "hero with a noble destiny vs villain who becomes corrupted by their jealousy" is just a really solid classic story structure so people trying to make something iconic tend to stick to it quite closely. It's one of those classic tropes that hasn't aged that well though because in a capitalist society the people we admire are those who work hard and overcome their obstacles rather than the ones who are "destined for greatness" (i.e. born into wealth). Also I get the feeling that Brad's pattern of making the villain say they hate people who watch movies is just a sneaky device he's come up with to make sure the audience is against them. Like sure we can see the villain being evil, killing people etc. but when they insult us directly, that's definitely gonna make us hate them! I'm not sure it really works though...

QuailMan420

I can't watch it yet because the movie isn't out here (in Germany) until September 27th! There's no non-spoiler part I guess? But the thumbnail alone looks amazing.

Tino

I was thinking, Edna Mode's gorgeous daughter, Ali.

Tom Bowling

Here's a silly thought: We know that Lucas was influenced by media from the mid-1930's (like Flash Gordon), because you can see similar imagery in his films, like the vanishing-point title sequence from Flash Gordon, or the look and feel of the villains. Could Lucas' ideas of heroism or biology or both reflect other mid-1930s media, either via incorporation or as a critique?

Steve Ray

"Destined For Greatness" seems to be a common concern for directors, viz: George Lucas reducing Force-aptitude to a genetic condition with midichlorians, and then focusing on Anakin's sense of isolation at being told how talented he is. Was Anakin's life any freer as a Jedi trainee than it was as a podracing slave? Maybe that's how Lucas felt as a film prodigy, trapped by his ability.

Steve Ray

Poor Padme 😢

The Porg in the back is all like "Draw me like one of your French Porgs...."

Bill Lehecka

There is no Jenny. Only Edna Mode.

ZBL

Also great video! I wish I'd remembered to say that before I started going ACTUALLY

GigaSlime

good job love

I've heard the critique that Screenslaver's monologue seems to be berating the audience for going to see movies, and i didn't see Tomorrowland so I don't know if Bird has some weird chip on his shoulder about this, but in the context of Incredibles 2 I don't really think he means it? I saw it as kind of a shallow, fake villain agenda that Evelyn concocts to make Screenslaver sound authentic that maybe contains shades of her actual grievance against superheroes. Like, the part about people living vicariously through them. The particular point about screens isn't really repeated anywhere else in the movie, even by Evelyn herself if I'm remembering correctly, and the movie even shows the Incredibles successfully raising Jack-Jack WITH a screen. Everything else I mostly agree on! I'd like to think I could refute the idea that Brad Bird hates us for being unremarkable normies, too, but I'm drawing a blank on that one

GigaSlime

I didn't go see The Increadibles 2 and fell asleep half way through Tomorrow Land. WHERE'S MY PARADE BRAD BIRD

F W Pancakes

Jenny, while you make a great Edna Mode, I always thought you could be a perfect Honey Lemon if Disney ever did a live action Big Hero 6.

Tom Bowling

5:20 "Ladies do that sometimes." LOL!

good job love

Fantastic cosplay. Just great.
