All of your YouTube Originals ideas were fantastic. I knew the first one would be a theme park based one because, well, obviously. That could be a Travel Channel show. Also it's funny to see your early thoughts about doing Twitch and worrying you'd do it and then not like it and abandon it. Prophetic!

Our Hostess has been posting a lot of photos from New England recently, and it looks like she had a wonderful time up there...but did she learn anything surprising on her trip?
I now find myself filled with a certain Suggestible Curiosity,
a hunger for knowledge that could hold my attention for an hour or more...
but when I am *that* focused, I know that I get fascinated by -- or even compelled to take action about -- things that are mentioned during or between anecdotes.
Like, if I was listening to Jenny talk about her travels, and someone leaned over and said "refinance," or "new car," or the name of a snack food (or ANYTHING AT ALL, really!), I know I would do ANYTHING to take out a loan, turn in my current vehicle, or buy cases of that snack food.
Do Jenny's videos make anyone else here feel really ready-to-buy like that?
Just curious.

Chiming in super late here, but I definitely think that for anyone looking to stream video games or release minimally edited video game videos (weird phrase), it helps to have someone else to do it with you.
It just eases the pressure to fill the dead space and gives you more freedom to say random stuff without it awkwardly trailing off into the void. Plus it’s just easier when half the time you’re reacting to what someone else is saying instead of coming up with something yourself. You don’t even have to play a 2P game in that scenario for it to work: you can alternate or just have someone watching and laughing at your failures (or vice versa). Oh and it makes the jokes feel less forced and presumably makes it a more fun experience for you as the creator!
Obviously it means you have to work around more than one person’s schedule, but I think it’s overall a really good option.

I love the idea to get into gaming and I'd definitely watch it. If I could suggest a game you might like I'd say Epic Mickey for the Wii. It's a Disney game and it's development was responsible for Disney buying back the license to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. It has a lot of references to Disneyland attractions and old Disney cartoons and it's a pretty fun game where you play as Mickey and decide to be a good guy or a good guy that's also a jerk.

I actually hate Twitch with my life and find it entirely unwatchable, even when I love the people doing it. with that said, you could save yourself time and money if you wanted to do a regular ol’ Let’s Play-style video—just capture your gameplay and add commentary in post-production. I’m not sure whether that’s more work or less, but if you ever didn’t want to be on-camera but still wanted to do a uniquely Jenny video, that’s an option.

I would definitely watch if you did some twitch streams, but only do it if you feel like you actually enjoy it, don't feel obligated. Also like others have mentioned, you can stream basically anything there, so it doesn't always have to be video games. Definitely make sure you have good moderators though because ya know, internet.

As for the twitch thing, if your interest in video games depends on having other players, what's stopping you from streaming games you play with others online? Even if it's going to be older console games, most of them have emulators with a netplay option. If none of your real friends are into it, you will easily find players right here. Just a thought.
Abel Cassius
2018-07-10 21:31:16 +0000 UTC
If that's the entirety of your Youtube originals experience, it means you haven't seen Cobra Kai? It may be the closest thing to that sith academy sitcom thing you said you'd like to see. A lot of it is about bullied nerdy kids being progressively turned into their school's bad kids clique. Maybe that's worth rambling about...
Abel Cassius
2018-07-10 21:28:35 +0000 UTC
Twitch does kind of rely on you streaming consistently if you want revenue from it, which doesn't sound like the way you're interested in doing it. If you do decide to go ahead with it, I've done some streaming before (casually, not for money) so if you need help on the technical end of things I'd be happy to do that.

I’ll definitely tune in to your twitch channel. I’d recommend having some mods to keep chat from getting too salty and weird. I watch Dexbonus a lot and she has set strict rules for her mods to enforce and I think they do a pretty good job of keeping it a fun and chill. I’ll echo other people too, you can do IRL, gaming, crafts, talk show, rambles, or whatever. It seems to be a pretty open space and it feels like a nice way to get people to support you directly? If it remains a side thing like Felicia Day treats it you can probably get the best enjoyment out of it - full time streamers seem to be frustrated a lot by dips in their subscriptions. (which they stream more to smooth out, and eventually fear taking time off to avoid)
James Murphy
2018-07-10 20:54:25 +0000 UTC
Well, nowadays there's also the Affiliate tier with paid subscriptions, which is a lot easier to reach (you just get less perks such as emotes, but honestly, who cares about that). Both also get bit donations enabled (twitch's built-in donation system), although a lot of people handle donations through Paypal instead, just because I think it's better economically?
Although, I just remembered Twitch also used to have a program to fast-track Partner status for people who come with a pre-established Youtube audience, and I assume Jenny could qualify if that's still around.
TalysAlankil
2018-07-10 20:36:55 +0000 UTC
And even while you are building your channel to get to the "Partner" level/status where you can get paid Subs, you can still enable donations/tips so viewers can just donate cash while you are streaming. That seems to be a very common thing in the streams I have watched (tips).
Brian Bakke
2018-07-10 20:33:26 +0000 UTC
Regarding twitch: monetization is through paid subscriptions (though there's also a non-paying "follow" for people who want to be notified when you go live), but it's not available from the get-go, you have to reach a certain engagement and regularity before you can even do that. So by the time you reach that you'll know if you like it or not

JENNY AND BLACK NERD COLLAB!?!? Also, exploring video game content would be cool, definite potential to widen your audience (especially with nostalgic classics like Banjo-Kazooie), but as others mentioned, proceed with caution as trolls love to tear down female gamers.

Efteling! I went a couple of times in the mid 90's.
back in the pre internet days hardly anyone outside of Holland knew anything about it; you'd very very occasionally meet someone else who'd also been there as a kid and when talking about it they'd always have this distant look like they're having Vietnam flashbacks
p.s I hope you're wrong about them now having movie licensed rides there, much of the parks charm comes from the really bizarre/semi nightmare-fuel folk-law they use for themeing; it would be a shame to see that replaced with something more conventional

I’ve not really watched Twitch but I’d be interested. I’m not much of a video game player but my brother was (and is) so I’m pretty familiar with old Sega and Nintendo games.
Top ideas. If I were a YouTube overlord I’d have snapped up that theme-park one – a YouTube theme park counterpart to Richard Ayoade’s Travel Man (which I’ve just started watching. It’s good. On a side note, since the people appearing on Travel Man are often the same people appearing on British panel shows, you’d be perfect for British panel shows like Would I Lie to You? and 8 Out of 10 Cats).
Stuart’s a good name for a horse.

Love this Ramble! Fun topic and surprise (spoilers) horse naming, can't beat that. I agree with the other folks that you can use Twitch as a livestreaming platform in general; it doesn't have to be video games (although that sounds fun to me). I would say the main thing to consider before entering that space is whether you want to do live video in the first place. I think that can be a challenge, especially for folks who value preparation and the ability to make humor out of editing. Still, it could be really rewarding to get live feedback. My biggest recommendation is to arrange for a few moderators in advance. Every Twitch streamer with an audience also gets trolls; you'll want one or two people at least moderating the chat and weeding them out early. Good luck if you pursue it!

Twitch is a game of "Can you monologue aloud while using your computer?" Eventually, viewers showing up makes that a dialogue which is much easier than talking to yourself, but if you like rambling to a crowd hourly Twitch is where it's at.

I definitely think you'd do well on Twitch. I love watching people play retro games. But definitely look into it more so all your questions are answered before you decide. Twitch has its own culture. My roommate walked in during the last bit and has not seen the Avenger's yet. Somehow I paused it in time. Great joke BTW. Thanosing the credits! Dead.

Fun ramble! I would totally watch a “Parts Unknown” style show for theme parks.
I am a major retro gaming nerd with a huge collection of games across all system so I would be very excited to see a twitch stream. The market for these old games has exploded so it can be harder and more expensive to get them but I know fans would totally donate stuff to play.
2018-07-10 15:38:40 +0000 UTC
I could definitely see you playing the TellTale games. Since you don't seem interested in shooter or that type of game. The TellTale games are great story based games. There is generally some fairly basic fighting/reacting, but certainly nothing like a shooter. But the stories are great, and you need to make lots of decisions that impact the games which fit very well into a Twitch-type scenario. You can pause when the choices come up and discuss them with the viewers, or lay out your reasons/arguments, etc. I believe it would be very entertaining with your sense of humor.

I like the idea of following a celebrity at an appearance (convention, etc) and tell them there is one actor who is going to approach them with a fake interaction, then film the whole experience, edit it down to the 5 most ridiculous characters, show a highlight reel and say "who was the actor?" And watch the celebrity pick the wrong person and be like "you mean this fan was genuine when they asked for me to sign their poster and then kiss it?". I imagine this would be fun because most fan interactions are terrible.

That was some mighty fine ramblin'! I was so engrossed, I totally missed my Ant-Man and Wasp show time! I'm all in for the horse naming thing. Could you add a part about celebrity horse names? Like, is Mr. Ed really such a good name for a horse in a sitcom?

2018-07-10 14:00:19 +0000 UTC
Well, I rarely use my Prime Sub, so that's yours if/when you get partnered... see, you're already making money! Your channel also doesn't have to be strictly gameplay (just go browse the IRL section) and you could talk about anything for as long or as little as you wanted to... i.e.; a day spent at Disneyland, whatever show or movie you've seen that you wouldn't bother putting on your main channel or some other daily task. Personality is King/Queen on Twitch so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding an audience.
2018-07-10 14:00:05 +0000 UTC
The variety throughout this ramble was great. My favourite bit from the early part of the ramble was going on able all the various love triangles, which was hilarious. The surprise victory for How to Properly Name a Horse had me with a wide mouth-open smile for, like, at least a few minutes. And then we got that bonus Incredibles 2 mini hot-take and that was just the icing on a most delicious rambly cake.
I'm just overall very pleased and also super excited to finally find out How to Properly Name a Horse.

I watch a few YouTubers who I followed over to Twitch for livestreams (FoldableHuman, some of the guys from RedLetterMedia, etc). I think it would definitely be fun to try. I wouldn't stress out about the subscription thing. I think people generally subscribe because they're interested in supporting the streamer. If you gave up quickly, worst case they're "out" $5, which went to support a creator they already are a fan of.
The one thing I would recommend is getting a stream buddy. It really helps to have someone to bounce conversation off of, to help you keep up with chat while you're trying to play, etc. FoldableHuman has his friend Crystal, who is delightful and who helps keep the chat lively even if Dan is distracted by game.

A Twitch channel, eh? You don’t have to just do games on that. You could just do a mundane task, like editing a video. It could be fun. The feedback would be live. People like watching others play games. It’s weird, but I get it. Banjo Kazooie for everyone!
