Regarding Aunt May, I think I can see what they were trying to do. Casting a 50-year old woman who looks like Marisa Tomei as a character who, in the comics at least, has always been a grey-haired octogenarian definitely fed into the reputation Hollywood has for considering actresses older than, say, 40, to have aged out of playing “character other characters think is attractive” roles. Even though the age difference between Tomei and Tom Holland is perfectly appropriate for an aunt/nephew relationship, the perception that May=elderly is still there. So I think they were trying to allay this criticism by saying “Yes, we know that Marisa Tomei is a beautiful woman, and the people in-universe would know it too. So people making inappropriate comments about his aunt is something Peter would likely have to contend with in the real world.” Okay, fair enough. Unfortunately, since the final cut of the film spent so little time with their relationship, all that’s left of the character is “She’s supportive, and people think she’s hot.” Hopefully, they give her more to do in the sequel.

Seemed kind of like a magnet school to me - specialized curriculum, lots of diversity, motivated students, but still a public school, not a private school filled with rich kids.

I don't think she is arguing that Homecoming needs to retread the same material as the Raimi movies. Simply that Homecoming lacks much in the way of any real inner character conflict or struggle. For a character whose motto is "with great power comes great responsibility." Homecoming cares very little about the responsibility part. There are never any serious consequences for him leaving Ned alone at the party, leaving the Decathalon, or leaving Liz at the dance. Even his relationship with Stark isn't much of an arc. Stark tells him not to do something, he does and Stark gets upset, then he does it again and Stark congratulates him. Peter's conflicts are mainly on a physical, external level (lifting a pile of rubble, stopping the elevator, preventing a plane crash) which doesn't seem as compelling to me for a narrative.

**It was late and I was unintentionally vague Maybe its just because I'm older but I'd rather see a Spiderman movie where he has some history behind him, like after spiderman 3. Each time they reboot they turn the clock back which is boring to me, makes me feel like everything I see is just catching up to where I left off, even if the plots different. I just want it to start off a few years in. I understand the movie is made for people who are too young to have seen the other 5 films, so its just a personal complaint.

While I generally liked the film overall, I'm surprised you didnt focus on how Aunt May was used primarily as a sex object. Tony Stark, the corner store guy, Ned and implied by the waiter guy were all lusting after Aunt May as if that was her only function besides the protagonist's guardian. Even Marissa Tomei was upset that the better of her scenes were cut. Don't get me wrong, I liked the film, and the focus should be on Peter, but after one too many times, the Aunt May is REALLY hot scenes started to grate on me. Yay 😊 for the Hey Arnold and Raimi comparisons. Going from your Homecoming analysis here and analysis in the Wonder Woman video, I think it's pretty clear what WB needs to do to make a successful Superman movie.

I think at this point it's become a case of studying in detail the tone of Zack Snyder's DC movies and running as fast as they can in the opposite direction
