I'm very late, and I'm not sure if anyone's mentioned it already somewhere else, but I think it's important to note: The removal of Steam/Itch.io games was largely the result of payment processors being pressured by an Australian lobbying group called "Collective Shout." You can go to their site to get a feel of what they're about, but I think it's safe to say they're ultra-conservative and anti-LGBT. The controversy was over numerous things: 1) like you guys said, payment processors decided what should be on Steam/Itch.io and not Steam/Itch.io, especially when Itch.io absolutely could not afford to try and push back against the pressure, 2) there was a conversation about what sort of games are artistic enough to justify their obscene content (i.e. this game is about abuse, but is it a genuine analysis of abuse or is it fetishistic?), 3) a lot of games like Detroit: Become Human were targeted either because they include LGBT relationships or because they were made by LGBT devs (LGBT games are often made by LGBT devs), and Collective Shout is of the opinion that those sorts of depictions are dangerous to children. Really tough conversation because some of the games taken down depicted sexual assault and there was misinformation about what exactly the angle of those games were (i.e. was it fetishistic or artistic). But overall, I think everyone pretty much agrees that payment processor having that sort of influence is bullshit. Sorry to be the long comment guy, but I think it's really important for people to look into and consider because the question of censorship is so nuanced and a lot of people's livelihoods are on the line.
