Tier 3+ - Accidental Champion (Book 2) - Chapter 54 - Insidious
Added 2023-12-14 06:00:05 +0000 UTCXavier shifted where he sat, fidgety and giddy with excitement. After all the carnage he’d inflicted upon his enemies, perhaps his mood should have been a bit more sombre.
I did what I did because I needed to, he thought. And I saved Queen Alastea from a fate she didn’t deserve, even if I didn’t get to see her in the end.
And he accomplished something no one else ever had. He was proud of what he’d done, and excited for what it could mean. He could only imagine how powerful his next class choice might be, when every one of his attributes was over the three-thousand-point threshold, with one above four thousand, and another above five thousand.
Not to mention having the title for achieving E Grade faster than any other Denizen in the Greater Universe. Surely that must count for something.
He drew in a deep breath and forced himself to lower his expectations. He didn’t want to imagine his class upgrade to be something far more than it truly was and be disappointed.
He brought up the selection list. There were five different classes to choose from.
Reaper of the Mind – Epic Class
Puppet Master – Epic Class
Insidious Reaper – Epic Class
Soul Reaper – Legendary Class
Otherworldly Reaper – Legendary Class
Xavier tilted his head to the side as he read the different class names. Every single one of them was intriguing to him. For one, it was interesting to find that none of the classes were below epic.
I guess it wouldn’t be considered an upgrade if the classes weren’t at least epic or above.
The second thing he found interesting was that Soul Reaper—his current class—was still available, only this time it was classified as legendary. And though each of the names were interesting, it was the two legendary classes that his gaze fell down toward.
He wanted to read their descriptions first, but assumed that might be foolish. Though he wasn’t likely to choose the epic classes, he should discover what they actually did before discarding them.
Reaper of the Mind Class (Epic):
A Reaper of the Mind is a mage that focuses on magic of the mind and spirit. They are primarily long-range fighters and have the ability to imbue Spirit Energy into their equipment to strengthen its qualities—though this lasts for a limited time.
Reapers of the Mind, as part of the Reaper line of classes, have the special ability to harvest the souls of those they slay and can call upon those souls in moments of need.
Reapers of the Mind can also harvest an opponent’s mind and gain knowledge and consume some of their memories after death. This can give the user the ability to learn spells and skills from slain opponents.
Attributes per level: +15 Willpower, +15 Intelligence, +15 Spirit, and +15 free stat points.
Xavier’s eyes widened slightly at what the Reaper of the Mind class would allow him to do. He could definitely see the advantage in being able to harvest not only memories, but spells and skills, from those he defeated.
I wonder what I could have learnt from the Lord of the Endless Horde.
For a moment, he imagined himself using such an ability. Wondered how many different spells he could learn. And skills, too, he had come to find were incredibly valuable.
They help attributes far more than I ever imagined they would.
But he had to say he didn’t like the fact that it was a long-range only class. Though much of what Xavier could do was long-range, and he was still technically a mage, he liked the versatility of being able to fight up close.
He also already had the ability to imbue Spirit Energy, andWillpower Energy, so that wouldn’t be an added benefit.
Xavier noted the fact that the class offered twenty more attribute points than his current Soul Reaper class, despite them both being epic class. That must have been because it was an E Grade class, not an F Grade class. Though he didn’t like that it offered none of the physical stats on a level up.
He looked at the next available class on the list.
Puppet Master (Epic):
A Puppet Master is a mage that focuses on magic of the mind and spirit. They are primarily long-range fighters and have the ability to imbue Spirit Energy and Willpower Energy.
Puppet Masters have the special ability to take over the mind of an opponent, or multiple opponents, with several spells in this area, including the option of mind controlling opponents in a permanent manner.
Puppet Masters often control small groups or large armies of Denizens and beasts to do their bidding.
Attributes per level: +20 Intelligence, +20 Willpower, +14 Spirit, +6 free stat points.
Xavier grimaced as he read the Puppet Master’s class description, shaking his head in slight disgust. Though he could see how it might be a very powerful class in its own right, it mentioned nothing of harvesting souls.
It’s clearly not in the Reaper line of classes, which means I could lose all my soul reaping spells…
Not only that, while it offered the same sixty attribute points each level up, it was far more restricted, only offering a meagre sixfree stat points, with the rest going into only mental attributes.
It would certainly be interesting to have a permanent army… but considering all Xavier had done, he felt like he was already an army of one.
This class would not serve me well.
He moved straight onto the next.
Insidious Reaper Class (Epic):
An Insidious Reaper is a mage that focuses on magic of the mind and spirit. They are primarily long-range fighters and have the ability to imbue Spirit Energy and Willpower Energy.
Insidious Reapers, as part of the Reaper line of classes, have the special ability to harvest the souls of those they slay and can call upon those souls in moments of need.
Insidious Reapershave the special ability to set triggers in the minds of opponents, effectively creating sleeper agents. These sleeper agents can perform specific tasks for the user even if they are a planet away when a trigger is encountered, and will have no memory of the task they perform.
Attributes per level: +15 Willpower, +15 Intelligence, +15 Spirit, and +15 free stat points.
Xavier smiled. Though Insidious Reaper didn’t feel like his style of class, he could imagine how important it could be for someone who wished to perform political assassinations, or other types of espionage.
He could also see how those triggers could be used in a combat situation, wondering how powerful they might be… but he didn’t see how the class offered him much more than he already had. Perhaps it could be used to help him get information on an enemy, or even cripple them from the inside, but Xavier wasn’t quite that subtle.
Besides, he would rather have a class that excelled primarily in combat. That would be the only way he could truly take out enemy leadership. He doubted he would be able to put triggers in the minds of those that were much more powerful than himself.
No, Insidious Reaper wasn’t the class for him, but it certainly showed him something of what could be possible within the Greater Universe. More than just being able to grow wings or control the minds of those in front of him.
Are the possibilities in the Greater Universe limitless?
Perhaps one day he would find out.
He looked at the first of the legendary classes.
Soul Reaper Class (Legendary):
A Soul Reaper is a versatile mage that focuses on magic of the spirit. They can be a long-range fighter, a close-range fighter, or a mix of both, and they wield a scythe-staff in battle—a hybrid, melee/magical weapon. They can wear any armour they wish and have the ability to imbue Spirit Energy into their equipment to strengthen its qualities—though this lasts for a limited time.
Soul Reapers also have the special ability to harvest the souls of those they slay and can call upon those souls in moments of need. This differs from necromantic spells as the Soul Reaper lacks the ability to communicate with the souls they reap and lacks the ability to reanimate the dead.
Attributes per level: +10 Strength, +10 Toughness, +10 speed, +15 Intelligence, +15 Willpower, +20 Spirit, +20 free stat points.
Xavier tilted his head to the side. From the description, he didn’t notice any significant difference to what the original Soul Reaper’s class description had been.
It’s a straight-up upgrade, the only thing seeming to change here is the number of attributes I’d get.
The attributes were certainly nothing to sniff at. Currently, he received forty attribute points per level. With the E Grade epic classes, he would get sixty.
With this E Grade Legendary class? He would get a hundred.
That would be a massive improvement.
But Xavier couldn’t help but think that it was missing something. Reaping souls was a massive part of what he did. It was the reason he’d been able to take on the Endless Horde in the first place. But it wasn’t the extent of what he was capable of.
I wouldn’t have been able to defeat the Lord of the Endless Horde, or even all those waves of the Endless Horde itself, without the use of Willpower Infusion.
It had become a large part of who he was as a fighter, and he was hoping it would have better influenced his next class choice to give him some more diversity in his spell options. Though choosing something like Reaper of the Mind or Insidious Reaper simply didn’t seem like an option.
Those classes would limit me far too much, and they don’t offer as many attribute points.
Xavier was well aware of the importance of attribute points. He knew how much a seemingly small difference per level made in the grand scheme.
Besides, out of all different class names in the list in front of him, it was the final class that drew his eye more than any other. He’d seen a name similar to it before. In a way, he’d been reaching toward it ever since he’d seen it.
Xavier looked at the description for Otherworldly Reaper.
