2025-11-19 21:21:22 +0000 UTCVinland Saga is a very dour and serious show, so when it decides to be funny, it hits harder. Einar praying so enthusiastically is hilarious, but there's a scene with Olmar a few episodes later that I'm REALLY looking forward to. 🤣🤣

It starts out so fun, with Thorfinn and Einar's crops finally coming in and the ensuing romance between Einar and Arnheid. But as soon as Thorgill's arrival is announced, the tone shifts rather starkly. Like, I felt that slap Arnheid received when it happened. 🫤

Snake being a hard ass but wanting leniency when it comes down to it. Ketil having to struggle with the norms of Norse society, also having his own son reinforce his fear of war. Wondering what his son must have seen to turn thorgil into what he is today. And the gems thorgil and pater. First pater, its very telling of the world they live in that even pater, not some noblemen that never had any struggle, but a slave, say that a flogging was a just punishment, a punishment I’m sure he has been given countless times in his servitude. Finally thorgil, he said he likes the kid because of his guts, and to be honest, I believe him, he has no reason to put on a face, right now he’s the prodigal war hero son returning home. Thorgil is obviously strong, to survive so long in the war in England, so he doesn’t need to feel strong beating on some kid, I wonder if he sees a gutsy warrior in the kid, and this rough beating will make him strive for strength. I could def see something similar happening to Thorgil himself when he joined the war effort by the other tested norsemen

2025-11-19 15:58:46 +0000 UTCFun fact: I believe 12 was commonly the age in which the debts of fathers could be placed on their sons in many Viking cultures as they are old enough to swear oaths whereas younger than that can’t. I’m pretty sure that’s why mistletoe could harm Baldur, when Freya made all things swear to not harm him mistletoe wasn’t old enough to swear an oath. I could be off on some of this, it’s been a long while since I’ve looked into this stuff.
