Enjoy! Next episode Monday!

Man this was the first real big episode that showed how much they were changing from the campaign. Like none of this happened this way and man ITS SO GOOD! Like they really looked at the whole and found an amazing way to tell the story we love but in a refreshing, shocking and fun way for everyone! While still keeping the major beats (like Pike getting stabbed by Grog and his sword!) Also the Scanlan song SO GOOD! Makes me tear up everytime I watch it! That being said...I was so sad about Kami like noooo! Whyyyy 😭

My favorite episode ngl

The Kamaljiori interactions was actually a big change from the original game. During the playthrough, the goal of the fight was to "Say my name" iirc, and they had to dive into elemental portals to read runes containing the characters of his name and then put them in the right order. And not die at the same time naturally. Grog did accidentally impale Pike during the fight though. I can see why they might want to change it as the fight itself was probably a lot more compelling as a D&D game than it would be in animation, plus we just had elemental portal stuff in the last episode (they were farther apart irl). Changing the sequence to give Scanlan a unique character moment and then having the big follow up fight with the dragon are both pretty cool changes. Also I found it hilarious that Umbrasyl steals the sword in this show because as far as I remember Sam literally used it like twice in the entire rest of the campaign, and it makes it really easy to justify why Scanlan doesn't ever use his powerful magical weapon

This and ep 10 are my fav eps of all seasons, personally! You're right though, there really isn't a dropoff

Mantis

I can see that being effective πŸ˜‚

HBelmont 24

That was because of the magic nullification area around the orb of annihilation

CharlieDaisy

scanlan can't heal if you remember effete ziggurat he could not heal Keyleth

This is one of my favorite episodes from this show -- it has one of the best fights (a kaiju fight with Vox showing their growing strength), a banger of a tune and quite a lot of character moments. It's also a good mid-season climax and it caps off my favorite stretch of episodes (3-6). I feel like these past four episodes hit every emotion: 3 has that shocking final moment, 4 gets into Vax's deal with the Raven Queen and Vex's resurrection, 5 is a homage to Keyleth and then 6 brings great action and gives us some great Scanlan moments. There isn't really a drop-off however, the rest of the season is also very good. This show shows us a good deal about how powerful the Chroma Conclave is. Androsphinxes are very formidable but Kami still lost to Umbrasyl, the ancient black dragon -- who had enough left over to still take it to Vox Machina. This episode also shows how powerful Kraven Edge is, because for a while Grog was going toe to toe with the dragon. It's a losing effort -- Grog was essentially peeling himself off of that rock wall before the sword decided that it wanted Pike as an appetizer. But it's also easy to see why Grog is holding onto a sword that makes him extremely powerful in battle.

This episode covers sooooo much! The song, the kaiju battle, and that ending 🀯

The studio behind Korra and Vox Machina is so good at blending 2-D and 3-D animation. Just look at the scenes with Scanlan and the Sphinx.

HBelmont 24

Fun fact: the Crow/Raven cawing noise is done by Taliesan (Percy). He’d often pull it out of nowhere during the campaign to freak out the others.

Uscmiller22

Grog is a Half-Giant, aka a Goliath.

Zain Cassis

Yeah, Scanlan probably sings cause that gets him in the right mindset to do his magic. I doubt it's fully the source of it.

HBelmont 24

I'm probably wrong but I feel like the sword vestiage(probably has a name I just dont know itπŸ˜…) doesnt need music or song to work, Scanlan was just using his music to activate it. Similarly to how he healed Kiki last season.

Regarding music: Most of the Legend of Vox Machina music was composed by Neal Acree of World of Warcraft music fame, but the cast sing some of the songs, especially Sam Riegel (Scanlan) and he also wrote some of the songs too alongside Neal. My personal favourite of his is 'Pass through fire': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcCh-La9loI Several of the theme songs for Vox Machina come from the most popular of CR songs 'Your turn to roll', and it also serves as the leitmotif for the team as a whole, which was originally made as a collab between Jason Charles Miller and Sam Riegel. The vocals are from Laura Bailey (Vex), Ashley Johnson (Pike), Sam Riegel (Scanlan) and Travis Willingham (Grog) Here is the Vox Machina version of 'Your turn to roll' with an early concept animation for the Kickstarter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUpfKPkDdRw Colm R. McGuinness did some music for Critical Roll too, most notably the Campaign 2 break and art reel track, 'Welcome to Wildemount': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEQC2HyhgTc

His songs/inspirations during the game were amazing too, but for completely different reasons, usually being raunchy or silly

cryptc

Sam is well known for making joke characters with a lot of depth that is not immediately apparent. He pulls some of the most batshit insane stuff out of nowhere in each campaign, and there is one scene from campaign 1 that I just can't wait to get adapted, hopefully we get it in season 4. I have a pretty good idea how they might do it in the show as opposed to the way it was in the game, and I just want to see it so bad.

StorytellerDave

One fact about curse objects in dnd, it is usually difficult to get rid of one. The wielder needs to roll a wisdom save to actuallyndrop the weapon. Grog has tried to get rid of the weapon a few times and just rolls low. Doesn't got the best wisdom either. It takes a remove curse spell to fully detached from a curse item. Also no one on the party has identify magic. No wizard or sorcerer or even warlock.

Suplee215

It was. They use the term half giant to help distant it from dnd here. A version of thr Goliath was one of the first extra races or species added to 5e in the elemental evils pdf. The current rules have a more interesting version though.

Suplee215

I do belive Grog is a Half Giant, The Goliath Race wasn't around at this time

Yuma Nanami

"Gotta hit him with that 1-A." Love the Superman reference. I, too, went and saw the movie yesterday. Loved it! 🦸🏼 Also, that was SURELY meant to be a My Hero reference, right?

HBelmont 24

Goliaths are basically descendents of giants. Very big for medium humans, verging on large. Of course the exact origin differs depending on the edition. Sometimes theyre connected to earth elements and bot giants but the Idea of big humans about 8 feet tall is standard.

Suplee215

Grog is a Goliath they are half giants usually nomadic people peaceful or barbariac depending on the setting and DM. Hope your having a good day. P.s if anyone has anything to add go ahead

Contrastjd

Scanlan had the MVP this episode. His songs are always great, but the sincerity here was genuine, and I love how he actually grew to care about the Sphinx.

HBelmont 24

I love watching this while I am technically still supposed to be working

StorytellerDave

Keyleth's freaking face at 7:49 when Percy gives Vex his coat is so goofy. 🀣 You can tell she ships it. Also, props to Percy for being a gentleman. πŸ‘πŸΌ

HBelmont 24

Thank GOD this drops on time so I can procrastinate workπŸ˜‚
