Serie loves her students, she just doesn’t have the emotional capacity to behave like she does. Plus having to basically raise them only to watch them die over and over has definitely left her bitter. But she still always takes on new students because she deep down really loves to teach magic to those she thinks are worthy. She even has unrealistically high expectations for all of them, like a parent/teacher, and no matter what they accomplish (Flamme) she always wants more for them.

2025-07-25 20:14:24 +0000 UTCI think there is something interesting words noting related to the whole overlook of what we know. The party of heroes kills the demon king. The demons hides in fear. Himmel dies. And the demons come back and start to expand on different part of the world but most importantly to the north. Serie comes after few decades and decides that's it's too dangerous to go unprepared in the northern region. Serie create the magic association to supervise magic (doing what Flamme ask her to do 1000 years before and she refuses, but now she does it) I like the whole Dynamic of the overworld and time we can grasp from there journey. Can't wait for season 2. In the north there might qo many mighty groups and even mighty danger for Serie to step in the world and cut the North from the other part of the world

When we encounter anyhting (for example, Lernen wanting to leave a legacy to accompany Serie) the root of it was almost always told explicitly many epiosdes before, but it just takes a while for a viewer to put the pieces together, just like Frieren did (as in, Himmel wanted to be a hero to have that legacy accompany Frieren).

She gets to see that spark and joy of magic her students have at the beginning kind of like watching your child grow/learn but also has to watch it eventually flicker and die out in such a short time (for her). It’s kind of sad.

2025-05-31 21:40:18 +0000 UTCWhen Wirbel says "Death isnt't the onyly goodbye in life" that hurt so much. I kind of expected a bigger reaction from frieren. When i think back on the first episode, I really can't believe that hey let himmel die right then and there. When we saw him after the 50 years time skip i was thinking "a so it's going to be slice of life and the two of them living out his last years" and he just dies. He's just gone and you can really feel time slippin through her fingers and the regret she has not using her time differently. When Fern had to explain to her that she won't spend three years searching for the flower and Frieren needed that to understand how time is still different. The lesson had to sink in for her. That's so crazy. Like time truly just keeps moving. Idk how to express what i wanted to express but it's something along the lines of being helpless against time and needing time to adjust oneself but time keeps movingon regardless idk

She is so rude and intentionally hurting her students feelings in an attempt to distance herself. It's so frustrating. I feel so sorry for Lernen who is this great mage with a wife and kids and grandkids who serie holds in high regard but he still feels inadequate in his old age bc of series words. I don't think she knows how much influence she has over her students be it Flamme or Lernen. A different kind of immature compared to Frieren.

Ubel's a freak, Land had the audacity to not take the test in person, Wirbel is a tactically minded soldier who views magic practically, much like Serie herself, and Methode is a quirky weirdo who's not afraid to say exactly what she's thinking. All very different, but all distinct. Meanwhile, Kanne, Laufen, Scharf and Ehre all have nothing really going for them. Kanne's still too inexperienced to really be a true First Class Mage, and the other 3 are so forgettable that I had to look up their names for this comment. Even her failure of Frieren follows this, Frieren refuses to engage with Serie's taunting, remaining true to who she is as the very thing Serie dislikes, someone who thinks differently than her. Decidedly vibeless, in Serie's eyes, even if we as viewers disagree.

To expect a human with such a short life span to surpass her, the "living grimmoire" wo knows almost every spell in existence, whose mana capacity is suppressed as high as frierens mana uncompressed is basically impossible.

It helps that he's voiced by Lemillion from My Hero. Ricco Fajardo has always been one of my favorite VA's in the anime community. He just has a natural way of saying dialogue that sounds so good, regardless of whatever character he's playing.

2025-05-30 18:54:40 +0000 UTCImo, Solo Leveling is a great show for some turn-your-brain-off entertainment with lots of action and cool visuals; that's a perfectly valid reason to like something. Frieren has a vastly better story and emotional weight to it, but it is something that requires you to think and get invested in to enjoy it and that is always going to have a less broad appeal. So I'm disappointed but not surprised by the Crunchyroll results.

I think the thing that really frustrates the hell out of Serie is that I dont think she is that talented and she knows it. She is the strongest mage because she is the oldest, but she sees all these prodigies who are so much more talented than her, and she sees their potential, she knows how much they could do if they had the same lifespan that she does, but they can never reach those heights, because they just dont have the lifespan necessary for it.

And when Ehre talks about Fern she said something along the lines of "she fights just like my grandpa, so oldschool" and Frieren belives Fern will someday surpass her. So Lernen and Fern are potentially on the List to defeat frieren. Lernen is like everywhere all over the arc but bc he is so timid, i almost forgot him. He's the one in the beginning letting Frieren tale the test with the holy emblem. Ehre talks about him to fern and wirbel ("my grandpa is a first class mage, if we fail i can ask him to escort us to the north" paraphrasing") he made the golems of course and at the very end Ehre is introducing them to her newparty. I just think it's so ironic that he an d Serie want him to be a bit more menorable but I forgot him so fast until he tried to kill Frieren. Until then he was on the same level as Falsch or Genau in terms of being background charas

The first few episodes are going to be rough for anyone who doesn't dig the artstyle but it's just as heartwarming and action packed as frieren at times. Although the character arcs remind me more of haikyuu. A great show that will make you laugh and inspire you if youre willing to meet it where it's at

It is just brilliant in every way, Kanehito Yamada was absolutely cooking with this one. Frieren: Beyond Journeys End and Orb: On the Movmeents of the Earth are like neck and neck for the top spot honestly. It is a bit disappointing that neither got anime of the year, but it is okay, they are more like anime of the decade anyways.

I've begun reaching out to my friends more often even for inane things and reconnecting with friends i havent spoken to for a long time. I don't want to rush but i also don't want to waste my time. I occasionally have phases of depression where i just seem to loose a lot of time and ooportunities. frieren just helps finding peace with that and moving forward in a better direction

She sees all their talent and potential and the only reason they never reach her heights is because thyre human and they die. So whenever she thinks about how they could have become "great mages" she also has to think about how they died bc thats why they didnt become what she hoped for them. Like when you have a child and dream of sending them off to college bc they are prodigies and youre proud of them and want to help them develope further, only to be cut short through death has to be decastating and Serie has done that numerous times. I can't imagine how Frieren will cope when Fern passes and I wonder if she will take up another student or isolate herself for a couple hundred years or make up with serie, now that hey undrstand each other better. When they talk about that flower spell and how serie still uses it, i always think about how tenderly she held child flammes hand

But the simplest thing would have the biggest impact, a spell that you would cast every day, especially when you are on the road. For us, while space flight is a massive breakthrough, simple heating and cooling in our houses, lights, washer and dryer... so many magics of yesteryear are commonplace. Just like Zoltraak.

By banning her for 1000 years from all Continental Magic Assosciation buildings, Serie basically made sure that Frieren would be remembered for the next thousand years.

None of them ever live up to her standards and it upsets her. But the cycle always continues because she never stops taking apprentices even though she flaunts like she will stop. Frieren knew fern was gonna be amazing enough to meet her standards and knew serie was gonna ask her to be her apprentice. That’s all.

I thought I was going to hate a lot of these characters but even the ones totally against Frieren's philosphy have good points and are interesting. Denke is that old guy who grew up poor but got rich and has no problem throwing money around because he got it to help others or just make them happy. I thibk the major difference between Serie and Frieren is shown when she asks the soldier mage what his favorite spell is. To Serie, magic is a tool. To Frieren its a wonder of the world and the more frivolous the better.
