In my opinion this is one of the best standalone episodes I’ve ever seen. Absolute masterpiece, showing the horrors that war has not only on the soldiers/Vikings involved but helpless bystanders. The soundtrack is absolutely beautiful and the final scene showing the broken comb, symbolizing his commitment to this goal and willingness to throw away a peaceful life is gut wrenching

2025-06-05 05:05:54 +0000 UTCThorfinn joined Askellad when he was just 6 years old. At this point he is roughly 15-16. He’s literally spent more time as a Viking/soldier than as a civilian. Not a specific comment on anything from the video, just something that really hit me when I watched him age.

2025-05-29 05:03:45 +0000 UTCVikings for the most part were farmers, hunters, etc. Normal freemen in Denmark/Sweden/Norway. But because of the climate and poor farming conditions when harvests were poor or the weather didn't permit they would go Viking, mainly raiding the northern shores of Europe (Modern Day Belgium, Netherlands, Germany etc). Once they arrived to England and saw how fertile and divided the island was (At this time there was no unified "English" kingdom, just many different petty kings) they wanted to move in and settle, which some did successfully in the northern parts of England/Scotland. Eventually (after 100+ years of raiding, fighting, etc) tensions rose and the King of Denmark sent a full force to fully colonize England and enact the Danelaw, basically annexing a large portion of the Island into Denmark.

The story-telling, the grey area, the music (god bless Yutaka Yamada). There's a reason why this is one of the greatest shows ever and up there tied with Berserk and Vagabond as top three seinen. Seeing proper period armor and weapons and then dual wielding dagger anime fighting is just such a tonal dissonance for me.

I am surprised they didn't show a proper viking shield wall get formed in return. I guess bc of the ambush they did not have the time to form up.

After a flash of guilt, he simply takes a deep breath and packs it away. For better or worse thorfinn wants revenge, lives be damned
