2025-08-02 15:59:03 +0000 UTCTbf, Frieren didn't care about taking it in the first place. She participated for Fern's sake.

2025-08-02 15:57:04 +0000 UTCSerie isn’t that unreasonable. The people she rejected are truly not powerful enough to be considered first class mages, they need to be literally the best of the best of the best. Shes just blunt and harsh, and she keeps herself distant from her students because she knows she has to see them die someday. If anything her rivalry with Frieren is probably one of the relationships she values most because it’s not so short lived. Does she need to be mean? No. But she’s thousands of years old and jaded, I think most people would be at that point.

2025-07-25 20:01:47 +0000 UTCI never even considered that Frieren could fail the 1st class mage exam. This show truly "exceeds [my] expectations"

2025-06-15 12:09:46 +0000 UTCShe's never been proven wrong. She has achieved more than any human ever has or ever will. She doesn't have an ego she isn't cocky she states facts. I train you all to be so strong and you die so quickly you don't get to do anything with that strength. It's disappointing. Fern shows promise of having even more strength maybe with enough of it you will be able to do something with that limited time you have.
gamerx
2025-05-27 14:20:54 +0000 UTCWhy are you comparing it to high school? This is someone showing more promise than anyone she's ever met. The rest of them that passed it didn't meet that standard she just offered it to fern because she excelled more. She's not gatekeeping with high standards some entry level mage exam this is the top of the top
gamerx
2025-05-27 14:18:24 +0000 UTCIt's also incredibly clear she's much stronger than frerin frerins Max mana is the same as her suppressed mana.

2025-05-27 14:03:48 +0000 UTCSerie was complimenting him. She was saying he's reached the height of magehood he's the strongest you could be and he's only got a few more years left to live because he's old.

2025-05-27 14:00:47 +0000 UTCYou can't take what Serie says at face value.
Ramon Fax!
2025-05-26 19:09:13 +0000 UTCSerie is not a mean brat. You just need to pay attention to what she is actually saying. She is saying that she shouldn't take human apprentices, because it's frustrating how little they get to live. She is never saying she is disappointed at Lernen. Much like Frieren, Serie cannot express her feelings correctly. She is a proud master. But she has watched ALL her apprentices die, one after the other, if not in battle, due to limited lifespans.
Bea
2025-05-24 22:01:56 +0000 UTCI think the biggest thing with Serie is that her words are much harsher then how she actually feels. Like when she says she should stop taking on human students it's not because they don't recognize how powerful she is, it's because she sees their potential but their lives are so short they can't hit the heights she thinks they otherwise would.
Arrowgorn
2025-05-24 16:47:43 +0000 UTCI think it is a protective measure. She cannot ever be honest, because being honest would mean she has to admit that she grew attached to her students, which in turn means that she would grieve all the more when they are gone in what feels like no time at all to her. This ep even showed that she still viewed almost a century old Lernen as still the timid boy he used to be. Frieren experienced something similar with Fern, she still views her as a child sometimes, but Serie experienced this many times over whereas to Frieren this is still something new. She never had a student before.
David Bodor
2025-05-24 09:28:52 +0000 UTCSerie is a huge contradiction. she says she won't take on humans and then tries to recruit Fern, she refuses to fullfill Flama's wishes of starting a magical society for humans and where do we find her? leading a magical society that test and rates humans. Serie's actions run parallel to her words

2025-05-24 05:04:23 +0000 UTCThis was the episode I was waiting for. I was really looking forward to seeing how they'd react to Serie's brutal judgement tactics and elitist attitude. And Kenny reacted exactly the same way I did. 🤣

2025-05-23 21:07:57 +0000 UTCSerie is the toxic min-max power gamer who would insult you for using any spell that isn't fireball and then complain to the dm when protection from energy is actually useful for a session and they didnt take it befuase they read the online community thread that its useless.

2025-05-23 20:31:09 +0000 UTCLove the seris, I read the manga before this became an anime and I was so happy the anime was really good too. Even better that you guys reacted to and love this show too. So I don't know if this is a SPOILER, but I think they already revealed this or at least I figured this out as well. So Serie (Zērie), every mean thing she says is kind of the opposite of what she means, like when she says thinks Flamme's goal was ridiculous she is actually impressed, like when she says the flower spell is bad she does like it, it's why she has a garden, she is sentimental about the apprentices she takes but disappointed by their short lives and think if they lived longer they would be stronger and also stay with her as well. She is sort of a Tsundere without the normal/basic talking, it's reveal more as the show goes on but it shows in the scene with Flamme. Anything she says that appears mean she doesn't actually mean it. TLDR: she doesn't really mean it when she says something she is being sarcastic and slightly disappointed that human lives are short.

2025-05-23 20:30:17 +0000 UTCWhen it comes to serie vs frieren, I think its a fundamental difference of philosophy of magic. Serie's entire life revolves around magic and the potential it brings, it's her craft and study, it's her life. Frieren... only somewhat like magic. And I think people often gloss over that fact because she's always hunting for new spells and is evidently a wealth of knowledge when it comes to magic, but for her it's not ABOUT the magic, it's about finding it, about going through life and experiencing the world and magic doesnt CONSUME her, it COMPLIMENTS her.
Rob Carlstrom
2025-05-23 19:37:41 +0000 UTCI think on key line is when Serie comments that Frieren is "still relatively unskilled for someone of her age" which is reinforced by Frieren acknowledging that she hasn't lived up to Serie's expectations. It kind of speaks to why Serie comes off as so hostile towards Frieren;in her eyes Frieren should be capable of so much more. Unlike humans, whose short lives inevitably limits their ceiling, Frieren is not bound by that limitation and should therefore be capable of reaching unfathomable heights; yet she has "wasted" a lot of time on mastering mana suppression just to trick demons. I think Serie is really implying that, if she wanted to kill demons that badly, Frieren would have been better off getting so powerful that tricking demons would be be unnecessary.

2025-05-23 19:25:18 +0000 UTCi wouldn't say bitter. I think serie just mourns their short lifespans less than she mourns their lost potential. I don't she was ever resentful towards her students

2025-05-23 18:09:36 +0000 UTCSerie has a salty exterior but i get the impression she's softer then she lets on. She just hides it by being a jerk. For instance, remember Flamme's will? How she got mad, tore it up, and all together dismissed the request? And what is she doing now... EXACTLY what Flamme asked her to do in the will. So she did honor Flammes request and took over the imperial mage association.
Joe Dunams
2025-05-23 17:52:53 +0000 UTCI'm not really sure what that would have looked like. Serie called him out for being timid, so I can't imagine what he'd be comfortable putting the test takers through.

2025-05-23 17:48:03 +0000 UTCSerie becomes a lot more likable if you stop paying attention to what she says, and pay attention to what she does. While she acknowledges that the technique might have been useful, she criticizes Frieren and Flamme for spending so much time on learning how to suppress mana, essentially saying that doing so is just a waste of time. And then we learn that Serie herself is even better at it than Frieren is, meaning that Serie has spent even more time on the technique that is "just a waste of time". Serie says she's disgusted with Flamme for asking her to teach magic to humans in general, but here she is, doing exactly that. Serie says she despises taking on human apprentices, that they're always disappointments, and that she's going to stop doing so... and here she is, ready to pick a new one up at the drop of a hat when she sees something interesting. You'll see one more notable example of this next episode, as well.

HBelmont 24
2025-05-23 16:47:47 +0000 UTCSerie and Frieren as elves are simple in their nature. Frieren is aloof whereas Serie is more direct but in a colder way than Kraft. She simply has an expectation and tends to take students but grows bitter when they don't meet the expectations that she sets for them, however just like the walk she took with Freiren; it does not mean she doesn't care. She cares about what it means to be a mage and so Flamme irritated her by making magic for everyone, just as Frieren has become fixated on what a relationship with people means. Serie is fixated on what being a strong mage means, and is stubborn in her ways.

2025-05-23 16:28:07 +0000 UTCI partially agree. I would just like to mention while she said mana supression is impractical given how time consuming it is, she also aknowledges how it helped Frieren to kill so many demons and more importantly she also surpresses her mana herself. I think she just said that it was bothersome to keep up the facade, the "fooling" that comes with mana surpression. And while Elves are longlived, they are very different from demons and are very much capable of feelings and relationships. Kraft is emotionally very intelligent for example and we see how Frieren used to live in a village. So elves just like humans are social creatures with familys and strong bonds/relationships. Human and Elves are very similar in that regard i think. Humans also have a lot of people who have trouble forming relationships. I don't think it i an exclusively Elven trait.
Limini
2025-05-23 16:19:45 +0000 UTCWhile I think Serie is undoubtedly ego-centric I do agree that I don't think that's the entire point of her character. I think she's basically blinded by ego and practicality basically. She See's Flamme's flower spell as a frivolous use of magic, and Freiren's mana suppression as impractical when the story is telling us that clearly everything has greater value than what's immediately apparent. Series is disappointed in her students (imo) not because they are human, but because she See's them as so much more capable than they see themselves or act as. She makes the point that her top student hasn't changed after all these years, and it seems like she basically mourns their wasted potential. I also think the point of her character is to contrast with Frieren. They are both elves who seem cold and emotionally detached at times. But Frieren has learned the value of relationships and the smaller things whereas Serie hasn't. Which I think is also intended to show how similar Elves are to demons as well since they took don't seem to understand emotions to an even greater degree. So really the point of the show is to show the inherent value in 'humanity', not as a race or species but as a concept.

2025-05-23 16:09:43 +0000 UTCI imagine Serie has been telling herself to stop taking human apprentices for years but keeps doing it when one catches her interest. I would not be surprised if Lernen has probably heard his mentor complain about taking human apprentices a few times.

2025-05-23 15:41:09 +0000 UTCAnd it says so much about their dynamic too. 2025-05-23 15:18:54 +0000 UTCSeries dynamic to the first class mages is so funny. It does seem like a parent nagging a bunch of children "you need to work together!" "being quiet now that youre getting scolded hm?" "not your fault babes, it's all frieren"

2025-05-23 15:13:19 +0000 UTCNot necessarily. Kanne and Lawine only got into a fight with Denken in the 1st test bc of the plan Frieren made that as said in the episode, picked a fight with the other groups. They would have a different 3rd member too. As for Sense in test 2, while she is really strong, her strength is partially in being able to ambush people. I feel like Denken's clone would be the guardian, not Sense. Regardless tho, Sense vs a group would not stand up nearly as well as Frieren can. Methode and Denken together can probably beat her even without Ubel.

2025-05-23 14:54:43 +0000 UTCThe flower spell is really such a great piece of storytelling. A simple piece of kindness. Flammes parents who taught it to Flamme who came to love magic bc of it and made her found humanities magic. Frieren who learned the spell after 50 years of learning magic just for fighting and using it to plant flowers at flammes grave, reigniting her love for magic when it was just for war before. Himmel who also only knew magic as a weapon of war and demons being comforted by it and bringing the hero team together. And it is all just a piece of kindness that got passed along for centuries. I love it so much

2025-05-23 14:50:18 +0000 UTCI understand the hate for Serie, but she is ancient. Not to use an invincible quote, but to her humans are like pets. She will outlive each and every one, and wont show how much it hurts her, but continues to take on students. Also saying Lernen could see Frieren was suppressing her mana puts him well above Aura on detection, to the level of the Demon King. And Lernen saying Frieren's mana was comparable to Serie's when he couldn't tell she was suppressing hers means her suppressed mana = Frieren's unleashed.
