In Frieren it is the name of the Creature, the two first class mages mention its name as Spiegel, it is a mirrior-like monster/creature and or object. They do not specify though if it is a living thing or a magical item. Spiegel is the name of the thing making all the clones.

Fun fact, Spiegel is not the name of a monster, it’s simply the German (as well as Yiddish and Dutch) word for mirror. It may also be the name of a creature, but as far as I can tell it isn’t.

Gosh that conversation about having to make a few big decisions that humans cannot afford to delay just hit me so much the first time I watched, it's like a legit line that stuck with me ever since and I've actually tried to change the way I am because of it. There's not a lot of shows that can do that, having such a deep impact on my life, Frieren is just on a whole other level.

As far as Serie goes, I think it's more a combination of cynicism and pragmatism than anything. She seems like she's been around a lot longer than Frieren (given that she looked pretty much the same now as she did when Frieren was visibly younger), so seeing short-lived creatures who are prone to conflict finding newer, more effective ways to do it is probably pretty distasteful to watch. I think of it like someone who already has knowledge of nuclear technology (let's say, I dunno, an alien observing humanity or something) living from the days when we were relatively primitive hunter-gatherer societies to a post-World War II society. They've live long enough to watch people go from attacking each other with sticks and stones to seeing the horrors they unleashed in World War II. And all the while, they see people constantly refusing to learn from their past and continuing to engage in the same kind of conflicts for many of the same reasons time and time again. I can imagine that someone who has seen all of that while already knowing what nukes are capable of probably wouldn't be too keen at the notion of humans discovering how to create them before they've evolved into a society less prone to...well...trying to blow each other up.

I dont think it was jealousy Serie felt there, although she refers to Flamme as a student she trained on a whim, she is clearly impressed by her establishments despite the fact she can not understand her aspirations. Its not that Serie couldnt do the things Flamme did in such short time, its that she never wanted to. She directly says in this episode that she doesnt want magic to be widespread. Serie is an elven mage of mythical era, she could kill the Demon King if she wanted to, and yet she didnt. It is because she doesnt like peace, she enjoys watching the conflict unfold.

I take it less as jealously and more as fear of change. The mages there are the more threats there are. Her criticism of a world where egeryone knows magic is that there was no regards to safety concerns on top of the not wanting lesser mages to use it. I feel like she didn't destroy the demon king becuase that will allow humans to grow even more. And there might be some truth to if everyone has magic then soemthing worse may come. Fern has scary potential in this episode but so does Ubel in this arc. And humans don't have to live to see what their choices do to the world in a thousand years. Elves do. Both a cynical and non cynical way to look at it.

Frieren and Serie have such an interesting dichotomy, and I really like how that last scene with them was framed. When talking about the Age of Humans coming on the horizon, Serie displays her distaste for it and turns her back to the sunset. Frieren, on the other hand, is excited by the prospect and faces it.
