Subs are really bad for reactions in my opinion. The majority of people who are not used to subs just straight up cant watch. and even if you are used to subs, the text is even smaller in reaction windows. On top of that it also makes it impossible to watch if you are watching the reaction on the side. It just super limits your audience.

I do wish you guys watched the subtitled version. I like several of the English dub's voice actors in other stuff, but I don't think they had the time or as good direction as the original Japanese VAs so the performances just sound kinda stiff, and some of the Japanese idioms are not well translated compared to the subbed version which gives us the idiom in Japanese but explains it in English in a way that feels natural vs. translating it to a different English idiom that has adjacent meaning but loses a lot of nuance. I'm not a hardcore subbed over dubbed purist, I very much prefer the dubbed versions of animes like Princess Mononoke or Wolf's Rain, but the effort has to be there.

Unpopular take but I disagree, I wouldn't recommend the extended editions for a first viewing. The added stuff is great for diehard fans but hurts the pacing of the films, and for the most part the scenes that were cut from the theatrical versions were just scenes that weren't as well composed or were less vital.

Just watched it a 2nd time, you guys really need to watch Akira. It is what singlehandedly revolutionized anime itself and what introduced anime to a wide western audience. The 2001 dub specifically is what you need to watch but the movie itself is from the late 80s. It's one of the best movies of all time and is what led anime to being what it is today

It’s this and also a pronoun mix up. They tried to combine the two in a way. In Japanese, she goes through multiple first person pronouns until she finds the one that doesn’t confuse Taki’s friends (watashi -> watakushi -> boku -> ore). After that, then she speaks the next sentence in a country accent which they call her out for. The pronoun thing is a hard thing to translate/interpret to English in a way that makes sense because English only has one pronoun for “I” while Japanese has multiple. I do think dub is fine for most things, but sometimes think you might miss out the little nuisances and some minor things that do get translated in the sub

Re: A Silent Voice, they're brought up together usually because it came out a year after Your Name, and are both peak anime movies. A Silent Voice is my favorite of the two because its story resonates with me personally.

The fake-out bittersweet ending is doubly cruel because the director was already fairly famous for three things: his gorgeous art style, his compelling romances, and the fact that none of his movies had a happy ending before this one. So everyone who knew his work was primed for sad.

A little thing that doesn't come across in the dub is that, in the scene where Mitsuha is in Taki's body on the roof with his friends, she's speaking with a country accent which is why the guys are staring at her funny. The girl, gal, guy joke tries to get the same point across, but it's a cultural joke you wouldn't know if you aren't a native speaker. (I'm not, I just got this info from someone who is)

I like the dub in general, but it's utterly criminal that what he wrote on her hand at the end isn't subtitled. I'm sure many other comments have said this, but it's supposed to read "I love you" when she looks at it, rather than his name as expected.

Your Name is one of my favorite anime movies of all time. This was the second non fully shonen movie I ever watched. The first one was a silent voice and that still holds my #1 spot as favorite movie. Silent voice hit home in so many ways, i hope to see you react to that one day! But also lotr by far my favorite movie trilogy that gonna be a fun react too!

Yeah your best bet for anime movies especially ones like this is too just use a pirate website seriously. Most legal streaming platforms don't go out of the way to add subtitles for stuff like the journals and the sentence on Mitsuhas hand. Netflix has an especially terrible rep for that kinda stuff and crunchyroll is extremely inconsistent with it. Here for instance, when Mitsuha opens her hand, it's not Takis name. He wrote "I Love You" on her hand. Not his name. Thats a hugely significant moment cut because they were too lazy to add the subs. The High seas are always superior

Whenever this movie gets watched people always recommend A Silent Voice after, and vice versa haha. They’re not related or anything tho. Personally I prefer A Silent Voice (fantastic dub as well) because of its emotional impact and narrative, but both are phenomenal.

Completely changed the story. Also keep in mind he wrote "I love you" I instead of his name because he is from the future, and he already knew she would die. So to him, it was useless to write his name vs writing his feelings so she would die knowing how he felt.

Also I highly recommend the film Oldboy if you guys haven’t seen it. It is a live action Korean film that is based on a manhwa, which is basically just a Korean manga, and it’s very good

Re: A Silent Voice, they're brought up together usually because it came out a year after Your Name, and are both *peak* anime movies. A Silent Voice is my favorite of the two because its story resonates with me personally.

The fake-out bittersweet ending is doubly cruel because the director was already fairly famous for three things: his gorgeous art style, his compelling romances, and the fact that *none* of his movies had a happy ending before this one. So everyone who knew his work was primed for sad.

Seconding, it's the same director and is similarly gorgeous and heart-wrenching.

Definitely recommend "Weathering With You" now that you've seen this film

I like the dub in general, but it's utterly criminal that what he wrote on her hand at the end isn't subtitled. I'm sure many other comments have said this, but it's supposed to read "I love you" when she looks at it, rather than his name as expected.

"A Silent Voice" reaction is very much needed, after Your Name its the most reacted-to anime movie and for good reason, I also think it would generate good dissucsions.

If you're looking for more anime movies to react to, I wholeheartedly suggest "A Silent Voice", "In This Corner of The World", and "Grave of The Fireflies" (or actually any Studio Ghibli movie, really) All of these are prefect emotional works of art, and I'd LOVE to see your reactions to them!!

Subtitles the reason I always go with sub for anime, Dub is just famous for having issues. Great movie, Gotta watch silent voice and I want to eat your Pancreas.
