TLA 1x7 Reaction

Enjoy! Final ep next Tuesday!

TLA 1x7 Reaction

Comments

Its hard to fault Kenny on not being able to contain himself during the episode here because it was SO drastically different.

Jinchuriki87

Just watching this... What in the actual FUCK is this nonsense!? Damn if I can't understand Kenny's sentiment that this is basically a fanfic of avatar! Some stuff made sense, but so much of it just felt so damn off.

Jinchuriki87

They did have a mini hand to hand combat scene in the og too

Aaron Reed

Just realised how weird it is, in the original AND in the Netflix adaption, how Sokka falls in love with Suki, but the moment he sees Yue, it's like he forgets all about Suki. Also the hand to hand combat between Pakku and Katara was so weird. They are water benders. Sometimes it feels like the show goes for more practical hand to hand combat in between the bending, so they don't have to do so much VFX, lol

Keyblade

I’ll say this, if everything was the exact way it was as the animated series, then they didn’t need to bother making an adaptation at all. A lot of, if not all the changes made in this ep didn’t really have any affect on the plot from the og, bc we still got to those major plot points that were in the beginning of the north episodes which were katara not being allowed to fight & her standing up for herself, yues relationship w sokka, zuko planning to infiltrate the north to search for aang, & the ashes at the end to signify the firenation coming. The only thing that I think is truly an odd choice that I’ve noticed throughout the whole show is aang still not have even attempted waterbending at this point, but this is simply a different perspective & not meant to be taken in a malicious way 🙂

Aaron Reed

Counter to this, the whole point of adaptations is to keep major and important story elements but still add different things that don’t have a detrimental effect on the plot. The changes in this ep such as yue being a waterbender, Hahn being nice, kuruks persona, aang being more hesitant in katara fighting, etc, all those things along with nearly every change that was made over the course of the show has no real effect on the story/plot itself and it’s simply a matter of “I just don’t like it & wish they kept this part” for people.

Aaron Reed

Looks just like my recent adoptee 😺, SIMON 🤗

Carlos Guzman

Counter argument to that is if they wanted to "make a knew story" they could have used another avatar one we know little about.

Strike177

like, I feel like you have this immediate reaction of change means bad and you're not letting this story be what it is and you're only looking for the original... Yue being a waterbender or Haan being nice and respectful are such cool changes in my opinion

Kfir shaltiel

also, I feel like every time you see a change you are upset, while not all the changes they made are good I like that they are trying to make this a little bit of a different story, it's not the same medium as animation and it's been 20 years since the original so I like the other approach to various subject matters like Sokka's sexism or Zhao's different personality in the live action.

Kfir shaltiel

by the way, in the original, we see in flashbacks that Azula used to have orange flames as a kid.

Kfir shaltiel

Pakku: "It would have been wise to be training in water bending during your travels" hmmmmmm if only the original included that and actually had Aang waterbend in "BOOK 1 WATER" :|

MossyCastle

*edit: I just recalled it was the moon spirit, not the water spirits that saved her life as a baby. Regardless, I think the change still holds up since the moon is incredibly important to the water spirits as well as to the culture of the water tribe and water bending.

Melanie Meadows

Ill def say upon further reflection it does make more sense, but I just don't understand all of the random choices to change things, when its already a well written story

Letts React

Honestly having Yue be a water bender actually made a lot of sense. To me, it made less sense not to have her one in the animation. She owes her entire life to the water spirits and they literally touched her spirt meaning they’re connected like Raava and the avatar. I think it was a perfectly fine change; not necessarily needed or super beneficial to the plot, but still coherent.

Melanie Meadows

really felt when Kenny said he feels like he is watching a fanfic 😂

Day

If I remember correctly, Azula has this whole thing with learning how to do lightning bending, like she couldn't get it quite right and then gets mad at the old granny twins that were always advising her. I believe it was pretty short in the cartoon, but I know she wasn't able to until she was on the ship (i think otw to capture Zuko) but she definitely should have blue fire by now because we are introduced with her having it when she was a lil younger than now I think. So I agree with you Kenny, about the changes in Azula and what had made her so terrifying is the absolute confidence she had and the air of command around her, making her seem older than she really was. In the live-adaption she just seems like a grumpy child struggling to please her father

Day

Trust me, I have A LOT of criticism for this adaptation, but the changes with Yue in this I actually do kinda like. In the cartoon she really didn't have much to her character other than being a love interest for Sokka and delivering some exposition. Here, she has much more agency and more of a personality to express other than being "the noble princess" for our hero to crush on. Those new aspecs of her are still pretty tropey though, so the execution of this version of Yue isn't necessarily the best, but at least she has more to her personality.

Taizen

Yeah I appreciate the candid critique. Would it be helpful moving forward for shows that have lots of negative critique to make a segment where you can rapid fire them at the end, so that the positive vibes of the normal video can stick around through most of the run time? Idk just a thought. The vibe of this video was just different than any other video so far. IDK the specific cause. It also might just be a me issue.

Æther Paradox

sorry i tried this whole series but it was just too much for me this specific episode, changes were just unneeded and weakened the plot so i felt the need to comment on the weakening of the plot, much like I typically call out points that strengthen the plot

Letts React

TBH I found myself this episode being perfectly content with what was going on and Kenny killed my vibe calling it put as different than the OG 🤣 I feel like commentary on what it IS would be beneficial, but being stuck on what it isn't just makes it an unenjoyable time for you guys AND for us.

Æther Paradox

Yesss Kenny, let the hate flow through you lol.

Kay

I’ll also say this: some of the changes you mentioned that weren’t in the og like Hahn not being a jerk, grans necklace & pakku used to be in love with her were things that I honestly think didn’t really do anything for the plot to begin with, so those are some of the things that can be switched but not affect the story. Aang not wanting katara to fight, I think here they’re just trying to portray aangs fear of losing them so he became more overprotective, when aang starts to smile in the middle of the fight, it’s like “oh, I was wrong, maybe I don’t need to be like this” with azula, that will just make sense in the next episode as to why she feels the need to prove herself, but for the fire, I’d remind you that her fire wasn’t always blue. She got that as she got older, so we are most likely seeing how she gets to that point bc we did see a flicker of it. With kataras fight against pakku, I think what they did here actually intensifies the meaning of what she originally did because after the fight we see all those boys and other waterbenders run up to katara and commend her on how she held her own and also beg her to teach them some moves bc originally, the whole gran gran thing happened, but nobody really reacted to that extent by the end of that episode, and all we did get was katara & aang now training with him, but the other members of the watertribe didn’t show that level of enthusiasm after the fight which is what I think the more important audience to reach. But anyways, loved seeing your reactions as always! Can’t wait for next week!

Aaron Reed

Me personally I kinda think yue being a waterbender makes sense. She was imbued with the essence of the moon spirit, which is the waterbenders life source or where their powers come from. She eventually becomes the moon anyway, so having her as a waterbender just fits with that narrative. Also she just makes ice cream in this episode so I don’t think it’s that big an issue but that’s just me

Aaron Reed

I think this may be the episode I disliked the many changes in most of all.

Jonathan Harding

I just want an anime about Kenny's adventures with the rebellious Mic

Katsuki BakuGOAT

Stop playing with them Sokka 😭

Julien Brobbey

you thought i was feeling you? that bender a munch

Kay

Anyone notice that Yue kind of looks like Ice Spice 💀😂

Julien Brobbey

Man such a big problem with this remake is the bad writing they give these actors

Katsuki BakuGOAT

The dialogue they gave aang and the way he delivered it came off super campy to me I hope they change that for season 2. Honestly all of the dialogue needs to be better.
