On a different note, I think they did a great job portraying Iroh's loss and adding depth to his relationship with Zuko this episode. I figured Iroh's actor would do the role justice (having seen him in a different show previously), but Zuko's actor really brought it home in those scenes.

I didn't think that Sokka's sliding was weird until y'all pointed it out lol but it also got me thinking - what if Katara was trying to prevent Bumi from stopping Sokka by earthbending him into the ground? At a minimum, Bumi seemed shocked by the technique, which is maybe why he wasn't able to "stop" Sokka? Similar to how Toph wasn't prepared when she first fought Aang.

Half expected a Steven universe reference Bumi: YOU THINK LIKE A CHILD Aang: I am a child...what's your excuse?

Then everything changed...when the badger moles attacked

The conversation with the earthbender reminds me of when iroh was kidnapped in the hot spring in season 1 and the Lu ten scene was just beautiful. And helps explain the deep bond between zuko and iroh

In the grand scheme of things, I understand the portrayal of Bumi… story wise telling yeah it would make sense after 100 years of being absent, Bumi would hold some resentment. But when you look at the story from the ATLA pov, it’s a huge miss of Bumi’s character. But I do understand, it’s just a bit iffy. The extra scenes that showed off the brutality of the war were great choices.

This episode was the peak of the show for me. There is still one specific side-story about Zuko, that wasn't in the cartoon, which I really really enjoyed, but the rest of the episodes felt very weird to me. Some extremely weird writing in some parts.

"why did they change the cave of tho lovers?" I dont think they are gonna do katang

This episode is difficult. Because it has some of my favourite characterisation and least favourite. The Iroh scenes and his focus this episode is great, love it. It really shows the truth of war and just how “evil” iroh was. On the flip side I didn’t really like the portrayal of Bumi, mostly cause it wasn’t really a continuation or building off the original but instead felt like a totally different character.

This is the first full episode I haven't seen yet. I'm ready for a fun ride with some side eye. I hear Bomi is... interesting.

Æther Paradox

Also for katara & sokka being in the tunnel, bc the actors for katara & aang, specifically aang is very young atp, the writers felt like having them portray a romantic scene like this between them would look weird (and tbh they’re right) so in this show, the showrunner confirmed they’re still doing kataang, just saving it for later. But then you also have the thing where, why put it in at all if that was the case and just wait for them to get older but yea.

So here’s my take on what they did with bumi. In his perspective, his closest friend disappeared and he bc didn’t know why, so he assumed he was abandoned. Bumi has actually LIVED for 100 years so he’s seen all the death, destruction, chaos, all of it. He’s felt what this war has done. Now aang, he’s heard things, but he hasn’t experienced war like bumi has and bumi knows that. So like kyoshi, bumi was trying to prepare aang for what he knows he has to face and truly understand the war, not necessarily out of purebred hatred, but like a tough love type thing. If anything, bumi simply needed aang to truly get what these people have experienced and when you think about it that way, it makes a lot of sense why a man who’s lived that long during these times would become so bitter. But yea like y’all said, he still felt like bumi to me in the end
