Is this episode really not liked or something? I’ve always found it pretty entertaining, it’s one of our first tastes of how capable lelouch and suzaku are as a team, Mao and his ability are genuinely kinda terrifying, and the reveal at end is pretty intense

2023-08-27 18:57:26 +0000 UTCMy favorite part about this episode is how its subtly hinted to that Lelouch did everything secretly to get Suzaku to come along. He had to assume Moa was reading his mind, and didn't know he was more than 500m away, so he was running around school and intentionally showed up in front of Suzaku knowing he'd notice how panicked he is and that he would come along. He had to shift his personality into being dumber than usual and Suzaku said 'normally you'd hone right in on that (the water in the background noise)'. He ran around to find Suzaku knowing he'd need his help, and had to do it under the assumption his mind was being read. Its an interesting layer into showing how much of a manipulator Lelouch can be, when it counts.

There are future episodes that may have bigger spoilers in the title (or spoiler images in the episode thumbnail) so if you wanna be completely surprised and spoiler free I would suggest stop reading the titles from this point forward.

Lelouch put himself in a state where he thinks that outside of winning the game he has absolutely no plan and as a result, he is at peak stress levels. The falling coin ended up sounding similar to another piece dropping onto the scale so he probably had an mini panic attack.

2023-08-23 16:52:28 +0000 UTCI will say regarding Mao's chess match he did admit he never played before during their previous game so his making a challenge around the idea of taking the most pieces would make sense for him since he has minimal actual experience with the game and has the means to play as sadistic as possible with his geas.
