Today we are giving you all an inside look at some of the changes we made to the Vision System and Wards in Ethereal! In one of our recent posts we talked about the updated Fog-of-War and the impact it will have on the game. Wards are something that were previously implemented as a very simplistic system, meant to provide a minimum threshold of functionality. However with the new systems, the minimum requirements of Wards has risen and we have redesigned and properly implemented them to match our wholeistic vision of what their intended functionality will be in Ethereal.
Wards are now are able to be destroyed by enemies and disappear after a few seconds from view, allowing them to persist and grant vision in the desired area. They now also have a minimap icon, play a pinging sound when Myths walk in range, and pulse a visual effect in the effected radius. We have also made a change so that Wards can only be placed on flat surfaces, removing the ability for them to be places on walls and cliffs. We believe these changes are fundamental to a functional vision control system in a MOBA and we will continue to iterate on this system to fit the need of Ethereal. We have future plans for specialized Ward types that will serve niche purposes.
