I’m also surprised they didn’t connect Hunter’s “Come back with results or… well, you know” with how it was shown earlier that Belos threatens him with violence to keep him in line. Boy fully expects physical punishment when fails and has normalized it to some degree with how he’s like “uh isn’t it obvious? there’s no other way to read this message.”

I want to suggest Amphibia at some point, but Gravity Falls is a classic and it will be fun seeing you watch a show made by Alex Hirsch after only knowing him from his voice acting. (He also does A Lot of voices in GF and it’s great)

I'm still hoping for you both to finish the Dragon Prince. Season 5 has been announced for release of summer 2023. So that will get the episode number up to 45. But The Legend of Vox Machina is a great series as well.

If you have a look at the fight I'm talking about, you'll note how much more similar Amity's goo usage is to Gaara's sand, even though the goo is liquid-ish and not ideal for blocking punches. That an Hunter's sudden phasing in and out to indicate speed is heavily close to Gaara vs Lee's fight specifically, I think.

Amity's fighting style here is more based on avatar. Her voice actress was katara and the pouch is a reference to katara's water bag

I'm reasonably sure that this fight is a reference to the Gaara vs Rock Lee fight in Naruto (which was indeed epic and worth checking out). Amity has the little gourd with the sludge and Gaara has a sand gourd and they both use it to block punches as a defence and also use it to restrict movement for their very fast opponents. A fun reference that I would be shocked to hear was not intentional.

This is one of the episodes where all I can say is: THEORIES! There were theories!! Theories about THINGS!!!! .... In all seriousness, you guys have no idea the depth of storytelling that has been, is, and will be happening. And I can't wait to see how you ingest it all!!! Thirdly, I'm surprised that neither of you noticed that Hunter was digging HIS FREAKING GRAVE as a reaction to potentially failing Belos. Says a lot about that relationship and his MH. The boy needs all the therapy and hugs. Plus, did you notice the shadows under is eyes all episode? This child is so sleep deprived and is literally fearful of his life! Belos is clearly one of those "the subtext is more important than the actual words of supposed comfort" parent(figure)-types

The Grimwalker book reminded me that backgrounds are Very important going forward, because a lot of story elements are conveyed that way due to the show's shortened timeline. Episodes like 2x16 and 3x02 for example rely heavily on examining background details to get character backstories/world lore.

I’m surprised neither of you noticed all of the similarities to Katara and Zuko this episode! Hunter is a jaded 16-year-old boy with a scar on his face (implied in 2x06 to have been given to him by his father-figure) who is doing bad things to earn the love and approval of the dictator who raised him. Then we have the 14-year-old Mae Whitman character, Amity. The last time we saw her at the Knee she was struggling to do a simple fire spell without a training wand, and earlier in the series was struggling to make powerful abominations without unknowingly wearing a power glyph. Now in this episode she’s doing all of these crazy, powerful abomination spells effortlessly, and also reflexively doing a fire spell with one hand. She’s even carrying her abomination goo in a hip flask and using it fluidly like she’s water bending it. The two of them end up in a cave (after being confronted by a crazy lady who wants nothing more than to be the dictator’s second-in-command) where Amity admits that they have things in common and she offers Hunter friendship, but then he betrays her. They have an epic fight, and at one point she traps Hunter in a ball made up of the liquid she was bending. It ends with Hunter returning to the dictator somewhat-victorious while Amity goes back to the other members of their anti-dictator group. Even Belos’s face reveal this episode reminded me of when Ozai’s face was revealed, where he had been built up to be this terrifying, all-powerful figure, but then we see his face and he’s just a guy. Yeah Belos has some gunk on his face, but besides that he just looks like a kindly grandfather.

Episode 10 is tbe mid season finale of season 2 and struturely to me feels like the end of the season with epsidoe 11 beginning a new one.

One thing is I do think Amity's people pleasing began with her mom. She dyed her hair the color her mom wanted, did good at school as she was told, broke up friendships for her. So looking at hunter and amity as similar due to that fits even more.

Palisman have their own supply of magic’s and their owl bile sac. Meaning if any human being had a palisman they would be able to perform all types of magic by using their staffs magic. This is why hunter is able to use magic he’s not human but he’s a witch with no magic so he needs glyphs or a palisman to perform magic. In the S1 finale Luz uses owlbert to ignite glyphs she placed on the portal door the use of magic also gets more creative later on.
