Patreon Newsletter #16

Dear Patrons,

After a busy fortnight with two new videos, it's time for a newsletter update, featuring a Cool Roman History Thing courtesy of James the Channels Manager, and BIG production news!

Production Updates

It's an exciting time for the Epic History team, as we embark on THREE major new series. Two of these you already know about, and one you don't....

RISE OF CHINA

When Harry the Editor joined the team last year, he brought a wealth of knowledge of Chinese history, which was the focus of his history degree. Obviously we had to put this to use!

Behind the scenes, we've been researching and writing 'Rise of China' - a five-part series that tells the epic story of China's 20th century, from the final days of the Qing Dynasty to a Communist giant on the verge of superpower status. We are delighted to have Dr Lily Chang of University College London onboard as historical consultant. The series will be out this winter (keeping it vague for the moment), and you will be first to see it here on Patreon. Animation work has already begun on Episode 1...

AMERICAN REVOLUTION

Patrick and Mike have travelled back in time, from the battlefield of Marengo to the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1763, where all accounts of the American Revolution must begin. No major updates yet but research and writing are underway.

WORLD WAR TWO

And having finally cleared the decks of Napoleonic projects (for the time being), I have begun writing our major WW2 series. This is going to be very 'big picture' history - a real global perspective, like our WW1 series - but unlike that series, we will spend a lot more time on the buildup. The story will begin in 1931, against the backdrop of the Great Depression, with these rather haunting words from Nicolae Titulescu, President of the League of Nations General Assembly: “The entire world is suffering from a terrible crisis and lack of confidence. The last hopes of the world are now in our hands.”

THE BATTLE OF TRAFALGAR

... Has not been forgotten, but our 3D animator is experiencing 'fixture congestion'. We still hope to have this climax to our Nelson series ready for you in the next month or two.

Community Chats

We're always looking at ways we can improve the Patreon offering to our supporters, and one new feature we are going to try out is 'Community Chats'.

We're kicking off with an 'Ask Me Anything' chat for the Patrons of the Arts tier and above. So, if you're in one of those tiers and have a burning question for me or any member of the team, ask away!

This is a bit of an experiment, but if it all goes well we'll add more chats down the road. We'll still be reading all the comments and answering all your questions here on the main posts, but we'll have time to go into a bit more depth in the Community Chat.

Special Offer: Refight the Battle of Marengo as Napoleon... or Melas!

Patreon supporters are, of course, usually spared our sponsorship messages, but I thought our Marengo sponsor might have particular appeal to some of you: Wargame Design Studio make decidedly old-school military history games for PC, but they are packed with detail and realism. And thanks to our deal, you can get 25% off their Marengo campaign! Check it out here: https://wargameds.com/pages/epic-history

One Cool History Thing

James writes: Last weekend I took a trip to The Newt, a country estate in Somerset which was bought in 2013 and redeveloped into a hotel and gardens. When taking over the huge grounds, the new owners also inherited Roman remains, which were first discovered in the 1830s. Further investigations in the 1960s revealed pottery, coins and a mosaic, suggesting a substantial villa was on the site.

Archaeological investigation during the site's redevelopment by the new owners revealed the true extent of a magnificent Romano-British villa, built in the 3rd century AD. But rather than simply preserving the remains and creating a small museum of exhibits for visitors, they got a team of archaeologists, architects, engineers and local craftsmen to build a full-size reconstruction of a Roman villa!

The result is unlike any other historical site I've visited. You begin by walking through the museum, where you are provided with some great GPS-triggered headsets that change the audio guide depending on where you are and what you want to look at. The museum displays a number of archaeological finds (from this site and across Roman Britain) and the full remains of the villa's bathhouse. It also leads you through the reconstruction process, with testimony from the team involved.

As you approach the reconstructed villa (named Villa Ventorum) via a newly-planted vineyard, your audio guide switches to become an audio tour from the villa's housekeeper. The imagined scene is that the villa is being prepared for a party for the head of the household (the 'Paterfamilias'). The housekeeper then directs you through the house, explains each room and draws your attention to specific objects (and smells). The audio tour might not be to everyone's taste, and some might prefer to enjoy walking around in silence, but I loved it. There's also a chance to don a VR headset, which puts you back in the rooms you've just visited, this time with actors playing the Roman family and speaking in Latin (with subtitles!). Both the villa and gardens create a truly immersive experience - a testament to what can be achieved through great research, attention to detail and craftsmanship... and a fair bit of money too!

That's all for this newsletter, but we'll be back with more updates soon!

Thanks as always for supporting the channel.

Toby

Comments

I am eagerly waiting your China series , World War 2 series and Trafalgar Campaign videos

CAN MERDİOGLU

There's a lot of things that influence the topics we choose - we look for something that we're interested in, that we know a lot about, that we know we can make well, and that we think will have broad appeal. And then Patreon votes usually make the final decision from our shortlist.

Epic History

OOh I just love the way you guys work with passion and true quality. One question I always wondered though how do you choose the next topics apart from patreon Votes also Newsletter 2 of begging for an ottoman series

The Imperialist

Great to hear about American war of indepdance! As long as it explains that George III was not a tyrant, I'm watching it!!! :)

Iain MacColl

I love the new graphics since the 'Voices of the Peninsular' video, they look so much better. Also your intro's are getting so much better since the old ones, I love the introduction on his Italian campaign, and Nelson's.

Iain MacColl

Yup, I watch all the videos the moment they come out :), and the Napoleon series is by far the best, and it just beats the Belisarius series, which is also extremely good.

Iain MacColl

We're taking a little break from Napoleon, after several years! But he will return.

Epic History

The Napoleon series is very good, please continue to make videos about that

Angel Lebres

Thanks for the kind words. And don't worry, we'll be releasing some new tracks down the line, so make sure you cast your vote on what you'd like to hear!

Epic History

For the record Napoleonic might be my favorite, and would like to see items like Hohenlinden or other great battles, but seeing a love of the story from your team is awesome.

MrAH2010

Love the new and varied areas of focus. But all I really want for the holidays is more sound tracks. (I need the HMS victory intro with that Bram horn. 😍)

MrAH2010

We copy the names afresh from the Patreon site each time, so it will update automatically.

Epic History

Can’t wait to see the china videos

Covfefe Dotard

Btw, small request from a Lord of Epic History, I changed my username from just “Mitch” to “MitchyCool”. Hope it’s not too much trouble, but if you could reflect that change in the Lords & Ladies section of the credits, I would appreciate that so very much! Great job as always you guys!

MitchyCool

Taiping happened during the American civil war and was a major event in causing internal reforms, it’ll be important as the foundation of Chinese industry and western intelligentsia Yes the warlord period is around the 1920s, right after the fall of the Qing, a fascinating and tumultuous era Even just reading the background of the factions in Rise of the White Sun will give you a glimpse of the diversity of the time period

Kevin Xu

Ah that's reasonable

HyperSonicX

Im sad its china and not more roman content but im sure it will be great anyway

Lewis C

Boxers get a mention, but we're moving fast in episode 1, a lot of ground to cover!

Epic History

We always research pronunciation, and this will be no different! Thanks for the recommendation.

Epic History

Super stoked keep the epic content coming!!!!!

John Fekete

The same can be said for Russia and the numerous ethnicities and cultures that fall under the polity. But there’s still a main story of the core territory that’s woefully misunderstood and I’m glad that epic history tv has done for Russia, and for China soon

Kevin Xu

Taiping is probably a bit far back to go into detail but I'm sure it will come up Warlord Era is...the 1920s right? Again I know way too little about Chinese history

HyperSonicX

Might be included as part of Late Qing, but before that the Taiping Rebellion would also be a big event to cover Not to mention the Warlord Era. If you’re into games, Rise of the White Sun on steam is a good introduction to the era

Kevin Xu

Whoa looking forward to China episodes! But I pray that the pronunciation will be on point ! Maybe you can reach out to Accented Cinema? He’s a Chinese film essayist on YouTube and Patreon

Kevin Xu

Thank you so much to the whole team for your work ! can't wait to see all these projets (china, us war of independance, ww2), maybe one day latin american wars of independance or the mexican invasion by napoleon III ?

Amaury Allard

Vive la Epique Histoire!

Medin Burnic

You guys are history channel jesus

jk kim

I'm definitely skeptical since a lot of historians and people simplify people's and countries as "China" when they weren't and I think it takes away the regional and cultural differences of different states, but I have no doubt even if there are minor disagreements the video will be amazing. Honestly I've been looking forward to every video so thanks for the great content.

Nova-Brienne

It would awesome if you cover the Imjin War or Admiral Yi’d entire life. It’s an era of history that doesn’t get talked about at all. Also keep up the great work can’t wait for the next project.

TKG Moff Hallas

I loved your series on Russia’s history. Looking forward to seeing the series on Ancient China.

Professor Metal Gear

Would it be nice to have video epic history about rise of china.

Leylan

HOLY SHIT I love all of these, I know way too little about Chinese history please tell me you include the Boxer Rebellion

HyperSonicX

Excellent update. Can't wait for the new stuff to come out!
