In my previous post Reddit post (https://www.reddit.com/r/CharlieTheSteak/comments/1ef9y28/im_the_developer_of_charlie_the_steak_lets_figure/) you’ve clearly showed that bringing back Charlie in its original form is what mostly everyone wants. As I mentioned there, I’ve decided to make it a reality, so let’s goooo!
As there’s an incredible amount of posts, comments and messages coming my way, I am no longer able to reply to all of you, I hope you can understand. Instead I’ll focus on creating update posts like this here and providing shorter updates on the Discord as we progress.
⏭️ How am I bringing back Charlie?
I’ve spent the last two evenings analysing the code and issues/bugs/errors and now have a pretty good idea of what needs fixing in order to have the game in a fully working state. I’m now quite certain it is doable and we will get Charlie back.
This weekend (Aug 3-4) I’ll be putting in (close to) 48 hours of engineering work into Charlie to fix most of what is broken in the game with the goal of getting it to run on my own iPhone, which will be a major step to getting Charlie re-released. By the end of the weekend I want to have a 100% clear idea of what is missing or needs fixing and when could we see a re-release. That’s why at this point I’m not gonna share a more exact estimate than saying I’d like to keep the release within a few weeks from now.
Btw. if there are engineers or game devs within the crowd here, reach out to me I might have some ideas to discuss if you want to support the project :)
📣 AMA announcement
On Sunday (August 4th) at 6PM CEST (12PM ET) we will do an AMA post on the subreddit where me, my girlfriend and my brother will answer as many questions as possible. If you have any questions related to the history of Charlie, our other games, weird questions or anything else, that would be the place to ask them!
💸 Support the development (or don’t)
The development will take quite a lot of my time and there’s also expenses (such as $99 Apple Developer Program, lots of coffee) that I need to pay for in order to revive Charlie. If we’re able to gather enough it will also make the Android version possible.
I’m still thinking about some reasonable rewards for your support apart from the game coming alive again, but if you have ideas, please share them. At the minimum people in tiers Medium and up will be getting a redeem code for the full version of Charlie, not having to purchase the levels once it is out.
If you are a true meatball, please support this effort. But no pressure if you’re just a steak. 🥩

2024-08-01 11:31:43 +0000 UTC❓ Commonly asked questions 1. Will the game be on Android? I’m still investigating what options do we have here to have it come to Android as I see the extreme amount of interest from all of you on Android devices. As it is currently, the code was only ever made for iOS, so to make it work (nicely) on Android we would need to rewrite the code for Android, or for both platforms in a multi-plaform game engine like Godot/Unity. So the answer here is Maybe not, maybe yes. for now, but I hope to have a better answer in the next week or two. 2. Wen steak? I don’t have an exact time yet… but Coming soon™️. I hope to be able to provide you with a more specific timeframe after the following weekend when I was able to put some development time into the game. 3. Will the game be paid/free? I’m bringing back Charlie *as it was*, so that we keep the nostalgic feeling. The game was originally released for free, so it will be released for free again. In the game itself, to unlock further levels you had to either: play mini games to earn meatballs, or purchase meatballs/purchase level unlock. So that will also stay the same, although I might slightly tweak the pricing or amount of meatballs earned to make it slightly more accessible and less pay to win, but rather steak (play) to win. 4. Will there be a sequel, new materials, animations? I don’t have the money right now to invest into creating entirely new content and animations, however if I get enough support on Patreon, let’s see what we can do. Either way I might slip some easter eggs and references into the re-release for some of you (did someone say I’m on vacation?). 5. What will happen if Apple rejects the game from App Store? It depends. I will first need to figure out why is Apple rejecting it and see if I can do anything to make them accept it. This could include modifying the game in a way which would pass Apple’s review. In the worst case scenario where Apple would not want the game at all (unlikely) I’ll release the updated IPA, as well as release on AltStores, itch.io or similar depending on public opinion if we get to this situation. I honestly think we can get it on App Store though! 6. What iOS it will run on and can I get to run on an older one? Do you have the old IPA? In order to get it working reasonably well the new version will be requiring a minimum of iOS 12. For older devices I’ll release the original IPA (I am able to rebuild it) once the new updated version is out, so they both come out at the same time. I know there’s people trying to find it on their old devices and release it before then, but I would kindly ask you wait until we have the new version out so they come back at the same time and everyone can enjoy beating some meat 🥩 7. Will there be ads? In the original game there were 2 types of ads. One was a banner ad in the bottom of the screen, that showed unless you purchased the full game where it would disappear. The other were video ads, where you could earn meatballs if you watched a video ad. For now I’m planning on REMOVING the banner ads completely as they are pointless, never worked and just ugly. The video ads for meatballs are entirely optional so I might leave them there just in case anyone wants to use them and can’t support the project in any other way.

UI is not optimised for all screen sizes Since most phones today are larger than they used to be, the UI is broken in multiple places. For example, in the mini games you can’t close/exit them, as the button is offscreen. Level selector screen is completely broken so you can’t select a level or exit the screen and so on. Most of this should be relatively easy fixes as I need to make the UI responsive (change with screen size), I don’t expect any major issues here. 2. Talking Tom feature is crashing The library I used for this feature to do voice modulation (you speak, it speaks back in a different voice) is very old and there seems to be some issues with it on newer phones and it is currently crashing and not working. I will need to investigate if this feature will need to be completely rewritten, replaced by some other library or removed from the game. This will require more work to figure out. 3. Permission requests are a bit broken The app asks for notifications, microphone and camera access and some of those are not working well due to changes in recent iOS versions so this will need to update. Shouldn’t be a big problem to fix, just needs updating. 4. Outdated libraries and other code Pretty much all of the social functionality is broken (sharing to FB, X, etc) right now due to very old unsupported libraries. This will require updating so that you can share content from Charlie to socials. It would of course make a lot of sense to allow sharing also to other (new) platforms like TikTok etc, but for now I’m unsure of how much work that would be. At the minimum I’ll fix all the original sharing functionality to bring the game back to the original state. If I figure out along the way there’s a way to add some other options easily I might investigate that. 5. In-app purchases are broken That is to be expected, since the game is no longer live on App Store. Apple has also changed how they used to work so some code updates will be necessary. However, I don’t expect that to be a big problem. 6. Various bugs, crashes, issues, etc There’s a lot more of smaller issues and code problems that prevent the game from working as it should, but I’ll be fixing them one by one. Hopefully, I don’t run into some major issues along the way, but I’ll know more after the weekend.
