Love Gabrielle and Joxer's relationship and how maturely they both expressed themselves.Even if it isnt the kind of love you hoped was reciprocated, Love in all forms is beautiful. It's tough but it's life. I also love how fiercely protective gabrielle is of Xena and Eve. She didn't want to let them out of her sight. Lol, full mama bear mode.

While some won't enjoy it, a lot of Xena fans liked to play with the idea of Xenares. (Or Arena? I just made these up. 😁) ... Nice to hear Autolycus get a mention.

2025-03-30 20:25:58 +0000 UTCFun fact: Gabrielle and Joxer were meant to have a kiss as Joxer lay dying by the tree. It was scripted but never filmed. Both Renee and Ted refused to film it. Chris Manheim (the writer of this episode) specifically said that Renee especially felt it was out of character for Gabrielle to kiss him. And it’s not the only time Renee has argued against any kissing scenes past the point of Season 1 and 2 when Gabrielle knows who she is now… and who she’s in love with. Renee has never expressed her opinion on Gabrielle’s sexuality but most of the fandom unanimously believes that she is gay and that Xena is bisexual. There’s room for other interpretations of course but most of the fandom agree that this makes the most sense narratively and Steven L. Sears (the writer that had the biggest hand in Gabrielle’s representation and development) believes that she was working through some compulsive heterosexuality and that’s why she kept getting with guys in the first 2 seasons or constantly crushing on them. When you pay enough attention, you can see that that attraction had a lot to do with Xena. Especially Perdicas. But yeah, apparently Renee was adamant on not having love interests anymore after him. At least - not male ones. But even so - even with a female love interest - she doesn’t reciprocate. It’s always one-sided. And the answer as to why is obvious. She has Xena. Both Xena and Gabrielle have both male and female love interests all throughout the show’s run, but only Xena’s ever really seem to mean something to her for both genders. So it makes a ton of sense to interpret her as gay and Xenasexual. It’s all about Xena for her.

2025-03-30 20:15:33 +0000 UTCGabrielle’s learning curve - Joxer teaches her a lesson I love this scene because Joxer hints to Gabrielle’s hypocrisy in feeling like she has to protect and defend Xena and Eve when she scolds Joxer for trying to protect and defend her, and she realizes she’s been a bitch to him all this time. I also think at this point Joxer realizes that Gabrielle is in a relationship with Xena. I would say he realized it in ‘Fallen Angel’ when they come back to life and he notices the way they look at each other. Now that he has told her that he is in love with her, it doesn’t stop him from trying to get her attention in that way. Even if he knows he doesn’t have a chance with her because she’s in love with Xena, he still actively tries to pursue her and I think it’s very sweet. In this little exchange between them, they talk about Xena and how Gabrielle feels very protective over her now that she has a baby. She’s basically saying that it’s her responsibility to be there to protect and defend them. She takes on the role of the father in Eve’s life. That’s what a father does. Protects and defends their family. Nowadays that wouldn’t be the case as a single parent can raise a child or a same-sex couple can. I believe Gabrielle takes on the role of the father, as she knows from her heteronormative upbringing that every child needs a father in their life. And even though she knows Xena can take care of herself and Eve, she still wants to help out. I think it’s more a case that she wants to show Xena that she can be that missing parent for Eve because she took on the role of a father or the other mother before she was even born.
