New Comic: Cyber!

The first three panels of this comic have been in my notebook for years. It wasn't until last week, when I getting something out of the fridge, that I had a really dumb idea for a punchline. And it was perfect.

20 Years

9/11 was the whole motivating force for my generation of vets. I was part of the first Academy class to show up after 9/11: we were the first to show up not knowing exactly what we were getting into - but feeling we had to go anyway, the first to have our size increased to over 300 after a decade of budget cuts, the first in decades to arrive during a time of war. Our courses and training all came from that post-9/11 experience, of counter-terrorism and homeland security. We knew nothing of t...

Happy Memorial Day

I suppose the phrase "Happy Memorial Day" doesn't make a lot of sense, but it's hard to phrase it as a greeting otherwise. "Good Memorial Day," "Somber Memorial Day," "Reflective Memorial Day" are probably more accurate, but sound odd. Is there such thing as a "happy" Memorial Day if you're doing it right? I think so - in that there's a kind of peace in honoring sacrifice, in understanding that everyone who sacrificed something for you did it because they ultimately wished you happiness.

The Ensign and The Lieutenant

One of my favorite Coast Guard fables, right up there with the tale of Douglas Munro versus Chester Nimitz.

I posted a slightly different version of this one on my Facebook page. I went  back to correct a typo, and I realized there was space for an extra joke.

Coloring Book Pages

It's not much, but if you're stuck at home with kids, here's some coloring book pages you can print out and give to them (or hey, fill out yourself. I don't judge). Take care, stay safe, and stay far away from others! I'll try to make more of these in the future

Thankful (from the Archives)

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

I don't think I ever became more thankful for things than after I got back from a patrol. Of course, the things I was thankful for were more in the range of "my couch" and "the ability to sit down on my couch."
