It's hard not to see this return to Chin as being an attempt to mine the same territory that had been used the much celebrated "The Debt" two parter. And I don't think it comes off particularly well, with Lao Ma suddenly having twin daughters who no one ever mentioned before, trying to tack on something more to a popular story. The best part is Gabby fishing in Joxer's pants with her foot.

2025-02-25 20:33:26 +0000 UTCI think I like this season more than most fans, except a few things. Including this episode. I feel like it mis-characterized Lao Ma's place in Xena's life. Yes, she was a mentor to her, but she wasn't a mother figure. Wtf. Also, this is one of the things I miss about the format of the first 3 seasons. I miss when they'd travel from town to town in GREECE. All this country hopping isn't for me. Lao Ma's kids are trash, but the woman who played the daughters was great. I couldn't even tell they were the same person. I like Gabrielle's outfits too. The whole cast usually dresses to match the culture they're in, but I think the way they tailor Gabrielle's outfits to be homogeneous with her usual style probably makes hers look better, to me at least. Also Lao Ma's power turns the wielder into a Power Ranger?? What???

2025-02-22 06:39:53 +0000 UTCNormally for me all the clear “Joxer is an idiot” scenes fail to make me laugh because they over do it and it doesn’t seem to work with his characterization. This fit him completely. Especially because he is using one of his “many skills”.

I love that scene where they’re trying to find the black powder and he pulls a Seamus Finnagan sort of gag with it blowing up in his face and Xena pulls Gabrielle to her side because she knows all too well what’s about to happen.

2025-02-21 21:56:55 +0000 UTCWhat would have made it better is if Lao Ma herself returned. Just because she’s dead doesn’t mean she can’t show up in other ways. It is a fantasy show after all. But Jaqueline Kim wasn’t interested. So that left them returning to her through her children. It’s nowhere near as powerful as ‘The Debts’ are. Rob doesn’t like it either.

2025-02-21 20:11:38 +0000 UTCI agree, I feel this new Chin episodes are undercooked and a bit boring, maybe the script needed some more rewrites, the concept is not bad but it could've been way better.. at least the costumes look great and there are some cool explosions ha!

So I even try to find good things through the seasons and episodes that I'm sure most fans dislike. (Mainly Season 5). I'm glad to see you didn't totally hate this one. This is by no means "The Debt", but I still enjoyed certain, very specific aspects of it. I don't mind the plot, I just wish it had been executed better. Costuming is beautiful, as always, and I'm also glad Joxer is back. Gotta get more screen time with him (while we can 😬). I enjoyed Marie Matiko's performance of the twins, though I DO think she handled K'ao Hsin a little better. I know it's Xena's pregnant season, and I know they had a lot going on with the changes in production during this timeframe. It seems to be one of those scenarios where you just have to work with you you've got. I enjoy Season 5 because it's refreshing to see some new ideas, but I will be the first to admit that there are definitely a handful of episodes in this season that are not stellar by any means. Despite all the negative things this season gets, I think it's great to see Gabrielle grow more as a character, too. I always watch every episode of this show whenever I sit down and go through it again--but this duology is definitely on the lower end of my list.
