Man, Mavigan was quite a stack of pancakes. Anyway, this is a pretty good episode. It's interesting to note how easily Ares, or most any god, could kill Xena if they so desired. But it's much more interesting to have a god who wants something else.

2025-02-08 00:19:06 +0000 UTC‘Succession’ aka the episode where Ares finally sees what Xena sees in Gabrielle. And maybe to an even greater degree than Xena wants to let herself see. Gabrielle and Ares as a dynamic is interesting for sure. But not when it’s played as romantic. It’s a love triangle alright. But it’s not Gabrielle/Ares/Xena. It’s Gabrielle/Xena/Ares. I like to think Ares is genuinely helping Gabrielle out in this episode in getting Xena to take her seriously as a warrior but he would have to play it in such a way that’s out of self-interest. I mean what other motive could he have for doing what he did in this episode? Steven L. Sears expects me - us - to believe that he actually had romantic interest in Gabrielle? That he was seriously considering her to be his Warrior Queen? Nah, it’s a ploy to get and get to Xena because that’s what he does. He uses people as leverage to get what he wants. Manipulates them to serve his interests. He doesn’t lie but he deceives them. And only Xena knows how to figure him out.
