I always feel so terrible for the Destroyer... who just seems like a thorny child who only wants his mother's love. Breaks my heart. But that X&G reunion is beautiful. Everything I could've hoped for + more.

This is quite a good episode, with the reunions, both real and false, of the two leads, and the cool monster effects of the Destroyer.

2024-11-15 13:39:01 +0000 UTCIn regards to the tattoo. I do agree with the other poster that said you may get more ideas if you wait until after the series. I know a few ideas that haven't aired yet.

You can tell that something's off from the angles. Xena and Joxer can't possibly be going after the same person in the same place and then BAM! Enter Gabrielle. Such a sweet scene that adds another fold to the mystery. Just how did Gabrielle get out. Hmmm 🤔 lol

2024-11-14 22:50:52 +0000 UTCAres described The Destroyers as being “insidious creatures with no soul” Yet, in ‘A Family Affair’, The Destroyer seemed to very much have a soul and really craved the love and touch of his mother… Yes, He attacks Xena but he did Hope’s bidding because he wanted her affection. I wonder if the heart of the monster was soft because he had Gabrielle’s blood inside of him. It always bothered me that Hope seems to not have any goodness in her in spite of being Gabrielle’s daughter, but maybe The Destroyer did have that good side that Hope lacked. Maybe all along it was him instead. I think Hope never had any lightness in her because she was only planted inside Gabrielle so her darkness could be released onto the world. There was no way she could be changed as much as Gabrielle wanted to try. I actually think it had more to do with Ares why The Destroyer seemed to have a soul. As much as we like to think Ares is bad, he still wasn’t evil and was only the way he was because it’s what he does as the God Of War. He was a much better person as a mortal when he’s responsibilities were lifted. Hope is a Demi-God. Dahak’s daughter. Gabrielle was only her vessel. It’s possible that maybe that’s exactly what the producers and writers were trying to showcase in this episode. Not ‘A Family Affair’ between Hope and her grandparents but between Hope and her child. If it is nature, that empathy skipped a generation. If it is nurture, then The Destroyer could have been changed for good the way Hope never could have been. It’s very interesting lore. Largely interpreted, as most things in this show are. Part of why I love it so much. I love that you’re given so much room to interpret the show whichever way you want to and because of that, none of what you could interpret is ever entirely right or wrong. It’s the way all TV art/entertainment should be in my opinion. Art works best that way. You let the engager of it make up their own mind on it and don’t try to force perspective.

2024-11-14 21:45:18 +0000 UTCThe reunion scene is one of the best acting scenes I have ever seen on TV in my entire life. It may even be the best. No matter how many times I see this episode, when I watch Xena and Gabrielle’s reunion scene, I tear up every time. Imagine for a moment… the beautiful soul you fell in love with and the light in your life suddenly gone in an instant. Watching them die right in front of your eyes. The miracle when you come to discover they are alive after so long thinking that they were dead. In all the pain, grief and despair you felt for months on end, you suddenly see them again for the first time… See that miraculous moment perfectly portrayed for you in the reunion scene by the incredible dynamic duo that is Lucy Lawless and Renee O’Connor. There will never be another like them! I adore the reunion scene so much. The concern and attentiveness in Xena’s face in this scene. It’s just so well bloody done. There’s a world of difference between the first reunion with “Gabrielle” and this and it’s just a credit to Renee’s acting abilities which are never considered anywhere near to the level of Lucy’s but it’s just because Lucy’s acting is very bold and striking and often improvised on the spot. Whereas Renee’s acting is very nuanced and understated and likely had been practiced and thought out for weeks beforehand. Renee puts a lot of thought and feeling behind her ways of acting and I wish she was credited for it as much as Lucy often is. Gods this reunion scene is everything. It may even be my favourite scene. At least dialogue-wise. My favourite scene between them has no dialogue at all. You want a true consensual loving romantic/sexual relationship? THEM. Sometimes I just watch ‘A Family Affair’ with the sound off because when it comes to Xena and Gabrielle’s reunion scene, I swear you don’t even need to hear them say anything to understand how they think or feel at the sudden sight of each other. It’s an understated recognition and the entire scene is much much much more powerful muted. Try it.
