Sea Violet- Tess Neil

A moment from last week's rehearsal investigating each dancer's solo poem. Here Tess is improvising to Sea Violet by Hilda Doolittle, this is her first interpretation of the words as well as first time hearing the full poem. The sea flower poems detail flowers growing in the sand, or on the bluffs next to the ocean. The Sea Violet fronts the winds, whereas the blue violets safe on the hill flutter, she asks who would trade the life of the blue violets for that of the "white sort" referring to the Sea Violet. Wouldn't everyone prefer a safe, traditional existence than one that has to fight to thrive? But in the end she celebrates the Sea Violet,

"but you catch the light--

frost, a star edges with its fire."

because it has a stronger beauty, a fire inside of it daring the Sea to do it's best.

We are in the second week of creating The Art of Seafaring and I am blown away with the heart of this cast.
