Introducing Tasting Notes, my Live Stage Show!
Added 2024-07-03 15:06:16 +0000 UTCI’m super excited (and a little nervous) about producing and hosting Tasting Notes, my upcoming live show in Seattle in partnership with the Seattle Chamber Music Society on July 19th.
I have two big passions in life: food and music. I grew up playing violin and other stringed instruments and was particularly into classical theory and composition. Musical performance, analysis, and composition are still some of my greatest passions.
Years ago I was convinced to keep music as a hobby while I pursued a different career. I'd always had a tinge of regret about that because there is nothing I love more than playing music with friends. As I learned more about food and cooking, I soon realized that the parallels between music and food run deep and are worth exploring.
So when I moved to Seattle and connected with some old and new friends at the Seattle Chamber Music Society and started attending their concerts and sight-reading parties, I not only found my outlet, but I found a new passion project: create a live stage event that will not just explain the parallels between music and food, but demonstrate them in a tangible, tasteable, hearable way.
That is how Tasting Notes (yes, you can appreciate the pun) was born.
I'm so excited for this and I hope you are too.
What:
A live stage event exploring the conections between food and music, with live performances of classical masterworks by the world-class musicians of the Seattle Chamber Music Society, and cooking demonstrations from some of Seattle's finest chefs and restaurants. Also, we'll be shattering the world record for the largest simultaneous chocolate tasting. You can be part of it!
Who:
Watch Keiji Tsukasaki of Ltd. Edition sushi break own a whole tuna and prepare sashimi. See Kevin Smith of Beast and Cleaver make his incredibly ornate pâté en croûte. Watch (and taste!) as Kelly Van Arsdale of Spinnaker Chocolate tempers chocolate. See Aisha Ibrahim and her team prepare and plate one of Canlis’ most complex dishes in a multimedia presentation that will take you right into the restaurant's kitchens. Listen to violinists James Ehnes, Tessa Lark, and other members of the Seattle Chamber Music Society perform works by Schumann and Bach.
(I'll also be hosting a series of talks and interviews with the guests, doing my own cooking demonstration, and, maybe, taking the opportunity to fulfill my lost dream of performing in a real concert venue to a real audience.
When and Where:
July 19th, 7PM, Benaroya Hall, 200 University St, Seattle, WA 98101, United States.
GET TICKETS HERE.
After I quit pursuing music, never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I'd have the opportunity to share a concert stage with some of the finest musicians in the world in front of a real audience, and to bring these folks together with some of the finest chefs in the industry. It's equal parts exciting, inspiring, and nerve-wracking!

I would love to see this event, however I live across the country. I would be interested in virtual or a taped recording (even edited shorter if necessary). Thank you, Kenji for all your work.
