Hardware limitations and tier prices:
Added 2023-03-10 08:26:08 +0000 UTCWelp, i'm gonna be 100% trasparent with you guys.
I'm Super hyped and motivated working on this widowmaker animation and will start with tifa on the 15th arternating between them every 15 days so i don't burn myself out.
And i'm pumped about the idea of starting to make longer animations (2-3) minutes long, And i love how they look in cycles (explained for newbies: the RTX version of blender) EEVEE VS Cycles comparison example:
https://www.blendernation.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/D_2gDe5XsAE7zWj.jpeg
So, i currently have an HP omen 30L that has a 3090, 64Gbs of ram and a 10850K i9
Pretty high end pc for gaming and most things.
BUT, the current widowmaker renders are taking 10 minutes to render in 1080p
So let's say the animation ends up being just 2 minutes long.
That's 120seconds X 24fps (worst case scenario) X 10 minutes per frame
Which gives us a result of 28800 minutes to render all frames, which is 480hour, or 20 days.
same goes for tifa most likely.
So... i wanna get a 4090, But despite blender can use two different GPUs on the same machine, i can't fit them in the stupid prebuilt, and probabbly this 650W PSU would burn trying to power those two GPUs.
So I came to the conclussion that if i want a 4090, i basically need a new PC.
And the best solution that ocurred to me would be increasing the viewer tier from 1€ to 3€. which is an idea i don't like because it's a 300% increment of the base tier price. but there's 500 of you in that tier, which would lead to an increment of 1K more a month making it easily affordabe in a couple months (with my current savings) (right in time for rendering as this long animations take more time to make than a simple loop) because let'0s be honest, if i'm gonna change the pc i think i better get a pc i won't have to change or update for quite some time :)
So i just wanted to ask you guys if you would be fine with this change.
Won't make any change without noticing you guys and i'll decide what i do on the 20th so there's 10 days for voting more or less :3

YEah render farms might be a great option if you're in a rush and it's crucial. but for small teams or just individuals like me it's not worth it at all :3

2023-03-23 03:58:02 +0000 UTCI was going to recommend trying a render farm, but I ran a calculator for running x2 3090's for 2800 frames and it was over $1000. Definitely not worthwhile.

2023-03-22 22:29:37 +0000 UTCNo need to be sorry and no ofense at all <3 And what's more... you're right. AND I discovered what was my issue. so i would either not change the price or just change it to 2 bucks (because i kinda want to put a 4090 and my current 3090 in the same pc) but that would be temporary. my problem was that i'm using and HDRI addon that lets you blurr the HDRI and the blurr was causing a shit ton of fireflies. i noticed that in my edited widow base model and after getting rid of the blurr it all worked as usual, no need for those 2K samples

2023-03-19 18:39:51 +0000 UTCI'm sorry but I'm gonna have to a bit honest here. If it's taking 10 minutes for you to render a 1080p frame with your high-end gear, then there's something hugely wrong with your settings. I render 4K with more stuff happening in the render, in much less minutes, with a worse set up and relatable outcoming quality. If that makes you consider buying even better gear and raising the price then I'm sorry, but I'm out. Not for the price per se, but for the bad reasoning. No offense btw ;)

2023-03-19 14:36:21 +0000 UTCCyclesX is much faster, how old a version of blender are you on if you're not using X? 😮 Happy to see how fast I can render it (to a similar quality) on a 3080 using CyclesX and bit of denoising if you want to DM me a file link. I'm Zantium on the discord server.

2023-03-14 14:25:57 +0000 UTCI've never tried Cycles X tbh, is it really that much faster? :3 i think the issue with the widowmaker one is a bit of everything. Shaders most likely. I gotta investigate it a bit more in any case because no matter the shaders i've been running them with 2000 samples because i got a ton of fireflies on widoemaker's body (might be the clearcoat for the wetness map or something idk yet) :3

2023-03-14 10:56:14 +0000 UTC10 minutes for a 1080p frame is a loooong time, for a shot like the Widowmaker ones. I'd have thought under a minute on CyclesX, do you have any optimisations in place or are you just running massive numbers of iterations?

2023-03-13 17:34:47 +0000 UTCIf that change would be temporary (like 3-4 months) that'd be fine for me. After that maybe settle for $2, since you also upgraded your Mega tier and will have higher energy consumption i gues.

2023-03-11 18:30:52 +0000 UTC<3 it indeed is. i mean you start thinking about it and you can most likely get two shitty second hand cars for the price of a 4090 T_T and that's just the GPU. because let's be honest, render farms are a horrible idea in the long run

2023-03-10 16:47:33 +0000 UTCHonestly top-tier hardware is expensive these days, but you get a lot for your money. 3 bucks isn't a big ask.

2023-03-10 15:24:21 +0000 UTCI plan on merging both. not like actually buying a whole new pc, but bascically buying a 4090 and building arround it a new pc with my current parts, so i could have the 4090 and my current 3090, reusing my ram and cpu... that kind of thing :3 don't want to waste more than it's needed :3 i think it makes more sense to have it all in a single pc. and who knows maybe if render times are to big i could still split it in what my current pc is and a sepparate one so i could have one for rendering while i work on the other... idk yet

2023-03-10 14:19:10 +0000 UTCIf you build a new PC, would you be able to use your old PC of rendering as well?

2023-03-10 13:49:40 +0000 UTCIt's more than enough. it's just that the longer, better you wanna make stuff the more power you need T_T

2023-03-10 12:18:38 +0000 UTCAnd here i thought a 3060 would be ok for Blender

2023-03-10 11:51:21 +0000 UTCFrom 1 to 3 is not that bad. So do what you must do. :)

2023-03-10 11:23:09 +0000 UTCThank you so much :) I'll keep that in mind :3 I'm gonna have to study a lot about this because if i'm gonna have at some point a 4090 and a 3090 on the same pc the PSU is gonna have to be nuts and i've heard it's not a good idea to give those GPUs all the power they need.- that it's good to undervolt them a bit. but... I'm worried about heating inside there with those two heaters inside xD so yeah, the more i look into pc building the more it feels like modifying a car's engine xD it's a bit scary :3

2023-03-10 11:14:52 +0000 UTCI get that. I watched a bunch of pc building vids before I built mine and it turned out ok. As I learned more I kept tweaking it, which I find fun but idk if it's your thing. HMU if you have any questions about parts compatibility. Even if you have someone else build it, you have to make sure everything fits together. I'd be happy to help where I can.
Matthew
2023-03-10 09:16:24 +0000 UTCAbsolutely :3 I mean i'm happy with my CPU (could be better for baking fluids and simulations of all kinds but it's not like i need much more power there) the ram i'll refinitely use the same one i have not like i need an upgrade there. But afterall it's just the fact that i've never built a PC in my life and it scares me a lot that i could possible mess up and break a part O.o might just get the pieces i need and take them somewhere for assmebly ngl xD

2023-03-10 09:11:33 +0000 UTCI'd highly recommend looking into building the PC yourself. You can save on parts like the CPU and motherboard you already have, and you don't have to worry about the prebuilt coming built improperly.
