Heart-shaped Modular variant from the #AllTomorrows universe

Commissioned by generous patron J. - a giant, heart-like Modular person from the All Tomorrows universe.

Let's take a deeper look into the design process of this creature. I first started with a few simple pencil-and-watercolour sketches.

A tree-like form.

Another "tree" with a swollen "head".

A more humanoid "tree" that walks about on a muscular skirt - like a snail's foot.

I am really happy with the sheer variety of tones I can get out of just a few pencil lines and just two colours of watercolour tablets. In an age of digital saturation, I cannot stress the importance of traditional art enough.

This version got chosen for a final render.

As usual, I took my art materials to a really cozy local cafe, and drew there. Notice how I drew the extra tentacles as separate elements. I can always join things together like a model kit.

This, by the way, is not the only All Tomorrows Modular person that J. has commissioned me. In 2024, I also worked on this related version.

Posed together, the two commissioned forms illustrate the harrowing diversity of the Modular People in the upcoming All Tomorrows rewrite!

Great questions John, 1- Each module is a sophont. 2- Yep, those too. Tho not all of those buildings are made out of their kin - some are mere mud structures. 3- I think they link up - a bit like the Traeki from the Uplift universe. 4- I think they form a consensual group mind. Some segments only act as "house whips", helping different modules think and work together.

Okay, being a fan of Orion's Arm, I've developed some questions about the Modulars: 1) Is each module of a Modular sophont? Or only the collective assembly? 2) Are Modulars who aren't free-moving "people" … like ones who are parts of buildings … sophont? If not, is the collective assembly sophont? 3) If #1 is true, and each module of a Modular retains the sophonce of their punished, cursed ancestors, do their nervous systems interlink when then assemble into a "Modular person"? 4) if #3 is true, does the assembled Modular person form: 4a) A tribemind? 4b) A group mind? 4c) A hive mind? 4d) One or more of the above, depending?

Something like Josie's modulars WILL be canonised.

I really do wonder if these new designs are gonna be canon, I wonder, will we get multiple illustrations for each species? Seeing as the Quhanim have subspecies, it doesn’t seem too out of the question, amazing art as usual :)
