Camo Bonus

Liam was on vacation for this one.

So I'm late to this, but I can talk about how amazing effect the US Navy NWU(blueberry) uniforms, our hit by car rate for the US skyrocketed after these uniforms were adopt as they were impossible for car drivers to see at night.

Landshark

Okay Im happy love my Italian desert tricolour

Layla Saturn

if i dont hear about M1929 Telo Mimetica im gonna be slightly miffed but still entertained B)

Layla Saturn

The Royal Navy did a lot of interesting camouflage in WWII. Just check out the Western Approaches camouflage.

Kevin Bodel

I mean, Russian aircraft were painted in that fashion since back in the [insert Soviet national anthem drop] so it's ok. You can give it to them. Besides, the SU-27 is fucking beautiful.

Vince Whitacre

Look, I don't only want to bring back the Blackbird because it's the coolest plane ever, but... I mean, yes, that's actually the only reason I want it brought back. I grew up near Wright-Patt, and saw it fly overhead a couple times. Fuckin hell, what a bird.

Vince Whitacre

Regarding the pink camo used by the British special forces, they discovered pink works well in the desert because they had trouble finding a downed pink plane. I don’t know if it was a recon plane or civilian but they couldn’t find it until they were basically right on top of it.

Leona3500

You guys should do an episode on the Sea Dart, tl;dr 1950s attempt at a supersonic seaplane, goes about as well as you'd think

Brandon Spearow

back in middle school my brother said that airsoft was at least 50% a fashion show and you know what he was right

Lain of the Wired

Yooooo, been seeing BTT everywhere lately!

Brandon P

I ordered my WWSD in Cerakote E-210 Elite Moss partly because of this episode.

Jarrod Furcsik

Please!

Kevin Brighton

Hey longtime fan, I know you guys have joked about doing another episode on 9/11. I think there's a number of things that could be covered that would still be interesting, anyways I just wanted to say I love the podcast since the Tacoma Narrows episode. If you guys ever plan on doing a episode on 9/11 again I actually am the co-creator of the 9/11 Archive subreddit & Discord, we have ab 41k members and are constantly reaching out and talking to people who were there and digging into pieces of media that are lost or extremely rare.

Between Two Towers

watching this episode and then looking at the camo my warhammer 40k darktide character has and sweating nervously

Lain of the Wired

yo where u get that pic of me :O

Harrison Sanchez

The thing about camo on vehicles, aircraft, ships and so on, is that its pretty cool stuff until you happen to be the soldier/crayon eater/seaman/airman being voluntold to touch up, or worse, repaint the darn thing for the nth time. It's part of the reason why this stuff isn't done all that much anymore. Nvm the economics and maintenance angle of it. Yesterday's Pvt Snuffy is today's SGT Maj Saltmine, and he remembers how much he hated that shit. Meanwhile Col. BrightIdea and Gen. Buttcaresser will do a double take and catch a case of avoidant personality disorder when they get to the part of the documentation going over the cost when they're about to force the action. No one anywhere likes to have to paint stuff and would rather just drape netting and leaf, twigs and shit on stuff. That or just straight up partially bury it when concealment becomes an actual concern. Also, the stuff that a lot of folks say about materials and coatings isn't cope, it's a real concern. Even stuff like trucks is covered in specialty crap that's very expensive to work with. It's why even long after we've forgotten about the ME again (if we ever do) you'll still keep stumbling into crap painted in tan. Nvm aircraft, especially stealth ones. The aggressor squad bit is not all that relevant, because they use stuff to alter the radar signature of their stuff to match that of the Russian's and Chinese. IE, stealth stuff in exercise is most likely low-observability at best. So keeping the F35/22/117s up to their actual stealth spec is not all that relevant when they're doing red team stuff. With ships what their painting with is very much a maintenance and operating cost concern. So unless the 3rd worldwide boogaloo breaks out and ai, camera guided missiles become a thing or whatever, the prospect of going back to ship camo will continue to be a waste of cash. Meanwhile, the Navy will continue to be in a rough place when it comes to keeping ships running. Which it will continue to be a concern until congress unfucks itself, we get a DoD secretary willing to purge their officer corps from top to bottom, and the Chinese decide to start the next big funni. Nvm that there's no real use for ship camo as already noted. That is unless DARPA comes up with some funky Non-Credible Defense tier stuff that actually works in the future ofc. /barelycoherentramble

"No, hey man, if we're gonna wear uniforms, man, you know, let's have everybody wear something different."--Cheech

anamoy

Is this going to show up on the podcast bonus feed?

Dave

A friend of mine and his wife got married in camo tux and dress.

Jason Young

I fully endorse CADPAT and accept Satan of the Computer as our one true overlord. Plus I can go to work and feel like I'm in an MS-DOS FPS!

pingus

Seeing even now in Ukraine the Russians digging up kit including uniforms of the 40s and 50s to kit out their lesser units and in particular those from the DPR or foreign contractors.

Graham ARISS

The reason why the Americans were using camo on their ships in 1945, was because the Japanese had little if any ship radar capability. Japanese knowing that American ships had radar had no reason to waste their time.

Graham ARISS

Interestingly in the Middle East the British built a fantastic rail marshaling yard with a fake steam engine that made smoke, and during the night they would move wagons around. However the German intelligence got to know it was fake so the Luftwaffe turned up one night and dropped a wooden bomb on it. Only problem with showing off like this, was that it blew the cover of a key agent in Cairo that led to British rolling up the German intelligence operation in Egypt.

Graham ARISS

I'm so here for November's love for Mia Mulder, but I feel obliged to let the internet void know that I simped for Mia before it was cool (before November) Also, can confirm, Canada is a strange country. I used to love larping as a soldier from my country in videogames, but I've lost interest as I've grown older and discovered that 1. Our camo sticks out like a sore thumb compared to other modern camouflage (in videogames*), 2. Our Elcan C79 sight (mounted on our small arms) also kinda sucks compared to other modern sights, and 3. I like larping as a guerrilla fighter instead because they usually got great videogame drip. Also, 4, we're a tool of imperialism usually. My pa, however, says that our current camo is fantastic in Canada's boreal forest. The "best we've ever had" as he put it. So I guess it's not too uncanny valley to be effective.

David MacDonald

Can we get this on the podcast (without video) feed?

Magical Johnson

ah cool a Metal Gear Solid 3 episode

dumbest girl alive

Right but only to cull the herd and with severe restrictions for times and proximity to homes. It’s not like you’re going for a walk to hot dog dam and you run into 20 hunters.

Jamie Fritz

re: the Shi'a deathsquad black multicam, I swear General Shepard's personal deathsquad also used something similar in the old Modern Warfare 2

RC-1991

Simple

Robin

Can confirm, this is not how militaries teach people to shoot lying down any more. Also I always thought those dumbfuck Navy ones should have been treated to turn bright orange when exposed to salt water, that way they might actually be able to see you if you fall overboard.

Matt

Found Bibi’s account

Matt

Love the Maple, Hate the beavers. If you don't like it, sorry.

Inconspicuous old man and mime

Not even if a dalek was trying to exterminate your nan?

Cate Kneale

Why would they need to know that when all they want to know is which are the commies?

Cate Kneale

My grandfather flew in one of the Nagasaki chase planes and photographed the atomic bombing. He later moved to Japan, married a Japanese woman and taught photography there. Aerial photography is insane

The Best Sean

aw man, you recorded this just slightly too early to include the just announced "multi-terrain" CADPAT that includes, and i am not kidding, "randomly placed tiny maple leaves" mixed into the pattern, because this country thrives in a state of maple flavoured self-parody

Oli

Artist’s impression was uncanny. I didn’t think Craig Fingersuck sitting shirtless in front of a laptop could so effectively emulate a transgender woman in New Zealand sitting in front of a phone eating pasta

Heyszen

CHOCOLATE CHIP

And a super special secret thanks to

And they're slow. If you need to know what an area looks like right now, satellites are out

Chrome Cylon

The Pittsburgh park hunters thing is 100% real and was so successful they’re expanding it to other parks

Ron Owens

I would like to see a bonus episode on fictional camoflage now.

floatybirb

Just saying carrier flight decks are not air conditioned.

Stephen R.

The antisemitism of the pod has gotten so severe the only Jewish representation has been removed. Obviously the only remedy is for the next podcast to just consist of the hosts saying "Israel can do no wrong" for five hours.

Jacob Burton-Edwards

Starting this one now, and I have all my fingers crossed that there will be a slide showing the camo worn in Ali G Indahouse 🤞🤞🙏🤞🤞🤣

heffa

20,000. Geebers

Ian Mackintosh

"Aerial Reconnaissance, largely made obsolete by satellites" hafta disagree with you there November. U2, Global Hawk, Reaper, Pred, Grey Eagle, and an endless array of Scan Eagle clones still do a ton of ISR. Satellites are vulnerable because they're always locatable.

Whisky_Delta

'ighly 'illegal

BrunchMonster

Yes. I need, nay, Demand those sailors in those booty-huggint white flare pants.

BrunchMonster

I love the reference the Hench app. Nicely done

Josh Anderson

No winter camo variants :(

Matt Rush

It felt to me that it was more saying that no side mattered. Just kind of an exercise in shitting on everyone involved including the journalists, anybody involved, *and* anybody trying to stay out of the conflict. Kind of a waste of time it felt like

Kelvin

Enjoying devons dragonfly defensive text

Hollie Greenwood

For all non-combat situations the US military should go back to the Korean War era uniforms with ties tucked between the buttons. And for cops I know that Menlo Park experiment where they wore blazers was considered a failure because the cops all felt like dorks wearing them but to me that is a rousing success.

Brian Danger Hicks

Activate Windows stepping up in Liam's absence, really strong showing today.

Ryan

Ah yes, the 5-1 camouflage. This kind of walkable urban camouflage is actually illegal in most us districts

Mthaytr

ive always counted drone stuff counts as war fighting

Joshua Hughes

Going into combat wearing woodland camo body armor and an ACU uniform was great because it basically made you a 1980s video game boss with visually distinct weak points.

Peevish Giraffe

BFA here who had never heard of vorticism and immediately looked it up, wtf this is so influential I can't believe I'd never heard of it, gotta use this to design backgrounds in comic books

Faye-Belle Couvrette

My old Dad, who spent Sept 44 - April 45 as an infantryman with 2nd Cdn Div in NW Europe and then after the war, HATED seeing Canadian soldiers going around in camos in Ottawa. As if they'd be sent overseas without time to change uniforms. Thought it was putting on airs. He hated the whole 'warrior' or 'warfighter' crap as well. I see some civvy wearing camos and can't help thinking 'Prat!'

Mike Traynor

The rifleman has his sling around his foot to put tension on his rifle hold and prevent himself from hitting himself in the face with recoil

Cholula Hot Sauce

that and the (i think belgian?) camo and you got something out of cruelty squad

Lain of the Wired

i cant stop thinking about how that painted over crack on the stahlhelm image looks like a vein

Lain of the Wired

plllleeeeaaase go back to someone doing your subtitles. auto generated are so difficult to follow. also i love you both more than life.

Jes

oh yeah hunting is basically a fashion statement when i was in highschool my hunting jacket was just an 40k imperial comissar jacket for a cosplay originally lmao

Lain of the Wired

Thinking about the urban trash bag ghillie suit

Booti_Boi69

Err... yes, Hawaiian shirts do count as urban camouflage. I'm teaching photography and it's my top recommendation. Add a wide brim hat, waddly walk, and a monopod. Bonus points for foreign accent. You will be able to take photos anywhere largely unbothered by nosy security guards.

Christian Bloch

It's fun trying to paint the USN Measures into 1/6000th ship miniatures. Especially destroyers. Looks cool when you pull it off though.

James Mudrock

I was so excited for you to get to Canadian csno. Lolol thry still use it

Real US military and government officials simulate a coup after a disputed election. Insurgents take capitals, disinformation is spreading, and the documentary-makers want to see how the officials would react. Chris Jones of the Marine Corps, Kris Goldsmith of the Army, etc. deal with Oath Keepers, Q Anon crazies, etc. in the war game designed by non-partisan group Vet Voice. Fascinating.

rk

god how did I know there would be multicam black hate. They already don’t make it in the womens field pants and you kick me while I’m down lmao

Aura

Im in full dad mode a Model Morris CS9 in Caunter this is great timing.

Maggie+Al

You guys will want to see the War Game documentary when it comes out! ❤️🙌

rk

They call DPM 'Malvinas' in Indonesia

Rory D Duffus

My great grandfather was a spotter for artillery in WW1 and actually used one of those fake trees. He recalled (to my dad I wasn't alive at the same time as him) watching a German infantry advance led by an officer on horseback. The horse just turned around with the officer with it as soon as they started firing artillery, leaving the soldiers to just carry on without him.

Adam Barker-wyatt

My ex BF is an op granby veteran, and the only one of the things November mentioned about desert shield he never complained to me about the after effects of was the rubber fetish gear. Makes you proud to be british?

Athena Von Tharsis

Mossy Oak >>>> Realtree, from real experience hunting CWD-carrying rats

Mikachu

There is bow hunting in the Wissahickon, to control the deer population.

Marianne C. Porter

I hadn’t viewed it from that perspective but that’s deep too. The movie is good in the art of saying a lot by saying nothing. I took that it was the horrors and confusion of war without saying it out loud. Ironic for a movie about journalists

Jason Machacek

Two words: venison cheesesteak

Matthew Thiffault

yo where u ge that pic of me tits out infront of my laptop XD

Harrison Sanchez

Yeah, it very much feels like it's trying to say that there's no such thing as a "noble" war, that the only good guys in any war are the civilians caught in the crossfire

Subspace Jet Witch

ARGGGH! The mirror can be a little surpsrising someimes, sorry.

Athena Von Tharsis

My understanding about Alex Garland's A24's Civil War is that you're not supposed to know which side is the wokes and which side is the chuds as a sort of statement about how Americans never bother learning who are the wokes and the chuds in other conflicts.

Brian Danger Hicks

I can't imagine why a British trans woman would have an intense interest in how to stay safe and unnoticed in a hostile environment

Noblesse Oblahaj

So that Canadian dudes boots aren’t painted. Canada issued CADPAT leather boots for a period of time. And btw, the Digi-Cam devil has a name for his mortal form. Dr Guy Cramer who founded Hyperstealth Ltd

I got the notification for this episode while I was on my way to the rifle range

RiffusKhan

I'm looking at the world map of camouflage patterns, and as far as I can see, Sweden is the only country that uses simple, sharp-angled geometric shapes

Subspace Jet Witch

God… ABU’s were terrible. Especially as an aircraft mechanic. They would just turn black oh and the boots too… Then when I got OCPs (roughly 2014 due to being in AFSOC) the crotch would rip out so often… I had one trip where the whole inside of my inner thigh was “repaired” with about 7 of the little iron on patches. The OCPs were so comfortable but, as an aircraft mechanic they would tear so easily and again just turn black or dark brown from all the various aircraft fluids… Another use of a reflective belt… it doubles as a tool belt, headset carrier, and rag carrier. When I had an office job at HQ… I thought we should wear our dress uniform. It looks more professional plus it gives me a reason to stay in shape since they’re so damn expensive to buy and alter. But now I’m moving to aircrew, so I’m excited for a two piece flight suit… the single piece flight suits are not appealing to me but I will admit they look damn sexy with the leather jackets.

I would like to support Devon's idea of podcasters running across the boarder carrying their Yeti mic and a sound board full of nostalgic pop culture drops. The barest essentials.

LoLDrood

About the Navy camo. I live in a town with a significant navel presence. I got in to discussion with a sailor about how dumb have a camo uniform is. I said I want.sailors to dress like sailors.

Doug King

I think Ian is much more likely to sell you a Rhodesian Uzi than Karl with a K given their split over politics

John Her

Pittsburgh also has cemetery deer, but you can’t hunt those ones.

This is Mr Liam Anderson, he is demonstrating how not to be seen
