In the discussion of POC you forgot this absolute legend: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garrett_Oliver

I was holding off on this episode because, like Roz, I am a homebrewer on hiatus. But today I am very hungover and needed something to listen to after a mind-numbing work meeting. Thank you! Also, for the record, mash smells delicious.

Donald Potter

Hooray for Step 8!

Donald Potter

There's a beer company in Cali run by guys that had family in the plains who named beers after the Dust Bowl. The horror.

I dreamed Alice was my soulmate until she said she preferred a wheat beer over an IPA. Alas, we will only ever meet in the friend zone.

That Guy in the Pacific

Beer is the exception to the rule that "German Purity Law" is typically a bad thing

Alex Roselle

LOL. The military nomenclature equivalent of "fully committing to the bit".

Alex Roselle

I’ll be referring to IPAs as “ballast” from now on

Was fun to track how sloshed Roz got during this episode, he certainly did all the drinking work on this. Also funny that Alice likes northern German drinking culture better, but doesn't like overly hoppy beer; Northern pils tend to be cookie-cutter overhopped bitter stuff, and Bavarian/Schwabian Helles and Dunkles tend to be sweeter and more easily drinkable. Also fuck your Haram. The longer Muslims are here in Germany, the more they drink, funny that. I'll buy you a Dirndl if you meet me at Oktoberfest, Alice XP. A real expensive one with silver bangles and crap.

Because different markets different, I guess. Luckily, or else good things would too easily get completely lost globally 🍀

Sebastian Bohmann

If you can get it, try Nigerian Guiness. It made me understand what Guiness originally was all about because it never degenerated into bitter black water 😎💪

Sebastian Bohmann

About different German cars - here in Austria, people driving a BMW or an Audi are the most impatient drivers across all the world's brands, Mercedes drivers are usually over 70. But behavior-wise, Mercedes, Mazda, Ford, Maserati, Lada, all the same. It's only those two that stick out, BMW and Audi. Plus every car with the driver looking at their phone while driving, these stick out, too, but aren't a car brand.

Sebastian Bohmann

Decoction has massive advantages when you boil the actual wort: its sugars caramelize and everything gets roasty before you mix it to the big tank of wort. The disadvantage is that some poor person needs to clean the pan after that, which sounds about as much fun as sharpening a traditional mill stone (which is a bit like formatting a hard disk but *way* worse, you cut spirally grooves with sharp edges into a huge slab of granite)

Sebastian Bohmann

Also, some IPAs are decent... but if I go into an independent, CAMRA-recommended pub with 10 guest ales I don't want 9 of them to be IPAs.

"Fly-thing" not "Fly-train". German is the most autistic language.

Someone needs to start importing Altbier to the UK.

NEIN! Zeug does not equal Zug!!

Marcelli

"really big tanks" Really big your welcomes

Christopher Barnes

bus≥train as beer≥wine

beer good, train good, but not good together

Xavier

Leffe is the dark fruits of beers. Dangerously drinkable af.

Jack Allars-board

Im way late getting around to catching up on these, but as a St. Louis native I will not allow you to besmirch the tarnished name of the Busch family. They do a good enough job of that on their own.

Rory Bage

I listened to this one recently while homebrewing a hazy NEIPA which I will forever call "The Hazy Bullshit". Its a relatively decent history of beer. I agree with most things except the hatred for Belgian beers which I quite enjoy. To name a few: Duvel, Hoegaarden, Trappist/Abbey beers.

Oh hey Ann Arbor here. Yeah Founders is some Dutch arch-conservative shit.

полусырой

when's the next episode

Given the recent trends, I'd say it is probably a 17-hour long epic, give it some time, it will be here eventually

Armored brass assault cat

Holy shit I loved this episode! I live in Grand Rapids, "Beer City USA" Man do us locals hate the Fuck out of Founders. I am glad you brought up that shithole. They can burn

Where the f is the next bonus, this is a ripoff

William Rose

Was dune good? also any good Belgian beer recommendations, I typically like Guinness and old Rasputin, but I'm looking to expand my pallet

Also once again i find myself getting dunked just because i enjoy Belgian beer.;

August

Dune wasn't even this long

August

I was wondering that. Thoight maybe I had to be a higher tier to get it early or something.

Jake

Hey, did I miss the "Technicals" Episode? Or does it come out some time?

Henning Grabbert

PSA: If you're using alcohol to kill Corona virus, the CDC says it has to be at least 70% alcohol in order to be considered effective. Be safe folks, drink 151.

Where is all the twitter info at?

This is my second time listening to this episode. It's so good. You could sell this as one of those courses from "The Great Courses." It's that educational. People would pay -- well, we are, but people would pay more, I think, for this level of knowledge.

starland ballroom is a hellhole.

pj saturday

No opinion on the taste, but Steam Whistle is brewed in an old roundhouse shared by a train museum at the base of the CN tower. And as we all know, train good, car heavy.

So I took almost as long to finish this episode as it took to edit, but to respond to Alice's question: Google says there is now a Black-owned brewery in Philly called Two Locals Brewing Company.

Cannot believe the slander about buckfast in this ep

The penn central episode is coming the week after the Tacoma Narrows episode

This was impressively on point and focused for a 3 1/2 hour podcast where everyone is drinking.

Hedrigal

didn't know that the american university system learned from breweries by just replacing everything with adjuncts

Ty Underwood

I didn't realize how incongruous this was at the time, but after hearing these guys talk about the proliferation of Irish pubs in the video I was reminded that I once ate at an Irish pub in Ulaanbaatar. What the hell was an Irish pub doing within sight of Sukhbaatar Square?

Fuck Brewdog, theyre super expensive in Paris and still shit

"we were drinkin with pollack, he drank a fifth of grappa, he told me that he loved me, and then he kicked me in the chest" my two refs to this substance are nofx and you guys and now i have to try it

I'm Glaswegian, can confirm that to present a bottle of buckfast is a political statement. If I was at a dinner table and someone casually brought out a bottle of bucky I'd have numbers and formulas passing in front of my eyes trying to figure out its meaning and if I should run

Robyn F H Veitch

Love the degeneration of the bonus episode titles from ep 4 to now lol, next one better have no vowels

alex

This podcast tastes like hops.

Hedrigal

I'd object to calling it a pastry stout though

NM

I enjoyed drinking this while listening: https://imgur.com/UAihVUH

Alice, it's FlugzEug, not Flugzug! Setzen, sechs.

The only future for beer is to adopt the czech budweiser model: state owned and state brewed, i call it socialbeerism

BTW, Baltimoron here. YES WE ALREADY KNOW NATTY BOH ISN'T BREWED HERE! We want it back!

STrRedWolf

Fruit in beer is good. I still pine for a Swedish black currant beer I've had excacly once

A sudden absence of bees

Altoona Brewing Company... now inhabited by a recycling center, a chocolatier, and the PennDOT DMV! But at least the rail line is still there and connects to the Norfolk Southern line that the Pennsylvanian runs on. Station's nearby.

STrRedWolf

As a belgian i am enraged i wasn't brought on for this, i haven't even watched it yet.

Also having finished the episode. Talking about pubs and stuff reminds me of how New Zealand got its bad binge drinking culture. The government made pubs close at 6pm from the 1910's to the 60's, so dudes got out at 5pm and drink as much beer as possible. It was called the 6 o'clock swill, my late granddad had wild stories of places trying to get around the closing time.

Larrykins

Re: Prominent Black-owned breweries... Brooklyn Brewery's brewmaster, Garrett Oliver, is now a partner, but he had to work his way up to get there.

This is reminding me to have words with Alice’s German language teacher. Hilarious, tho, many thx

John Harwood

Just sitting around at 1 a.m. drinking Flensburger Pilsener and having a blast learning about beer. Life is great. :D

Warpwaffel

"Benjamin Franklin, noted slave owner" why do you have to put politics into everything?! ;D

Liam, Rickard’s Red is extremely mediocre and I will fight you on that. Canada has some really good beers, you just gotta look for them. Steam Whistle is a really nice Pilsner that doesn’t taste like piss, for example.

Mitch

Listening to this on the way home from work, i passed two traffic accidents. I have no way of knowing if beer was involved, but i could guess.

Dammit Joe

Update: They did pretty good. Also don't trust anyone who tells you that the Egyptians were brewing good beer. Having tried a reconstruction beer from the era: it's still basically liquid bread.

yedoom

Fun fact: it was in fact the EU that forced Germany to give up the Reinheitsgebot (as applied to imported beers), in the case of Commission v Germany C-178/84 (1987). https://www.bailii.org/eu/cases/EUECJ/1987/C17884.html The European Court of Justice decided it was an unlawful restriction on cross-border trade.

"canadian beer is bad except for rickards red" is such a out of left field opinion. I guess rickards and sleeman and all that stuff might as well be an american's idea of the famous "canadian beer not like the domestic american piss" but it's like the most middle of the road red beer you can get your hands on. the most agressively normal beer you can order at a downtown 5-to-7 bar.

etienne

no it needs to stay

5 min mark: "...but this is the bonus episode so we don't care how long it takes" ... Monkey's paw curls slowly

Robyn F H Veitch

Lmao Justin this probably took 12 hours to edit didn't it

caseyjones

more dad jokes from liam please, that was a highlight for me

SpookyPenguin

Car heavy, train good!

Gints Halcejs

Three and a half hours hell yea

S

I love you guys so much for doing a 3 hour episode. Long episodes are my jam.

Larrykins

I demand an episode about those Glasgow cops crashing a helicopter into a pub.

Holy shit, it's 3 and a half hours long! Now I see why it took so damn long to edit. God bless you because I can barely edit vacation recordings, let alone that much drunked footage.

Supremetacoman1138

This was a great ep

Evan Weiss

Hi Alice, sorry to correct your German but: Yes. Flugzeug means flying thing. But Zug != Zeug, so that one doesn’t land for the train. NOTE: Stupid Patreon and not allowing for line breaks in messages unless you pre-type them. Shame! Shame!

Michael Kalus

Hey Alice, sorry to correct your German but:

Michael Kalus

I'm afraid of becoming "that guy" after this one because I actually have an extensive academy provided education on the early history of beer

yedoom

What happened to alice during Oktoberfest

Justin Case

I will pretend I was invited on this episode and begin my newest parasocial relationship with you all.

hot damn 200+ minutes of beer

Matthew Brukman

I haven't had a Richards in..... a decade? Vancouver has such a good local craft beer scene I just haven't bothered. I am not even sure they still have it in the liquor store here.....

Michael Kalus

Can confirm Richards Red is quite good, all other international "Canadian" beers are bad. But there's a lot of local breweries doing really solid stuff

3 and a half hours hahahaha

Luv you bb

Avynn Donaghe

sorry it's so late :(

Well There's Your Problem

Oh sweet bacon jeebus finally!

First oop dang it

Nic

And I just happened to check the minute it did
