The point about the named skyscrapers and medicean towers etc rhymes really well imo. It reminds me of when i studied archaeology. One important thing they tried to drill into us is physical manifestations of ideology, and this is the same thing

That poem reminded me so much of a quote from the 2010 film Centurion:
" In the chaos of battle, when the ground beneath your feet is a slurry of blood, puke, piss and the entrails of friends and enemies alike, it's easy to turn to the gods for salvation. But it's soldiers who do the fighting, and soldiers who do the dying, and the gods never get their feet wet."

Weren't those italian shouting towers only square on the outside because they were thicker on the inside near the ground? An undescended pyramid, if you will.
[57:30] - "Oh hey, look, it's where I used to work in the Before Times." Dumbest part: we're on the top office floor, and there's this amazing little balcony nestled in the little U-shape in the back - and we get in an absurd amount of trouble if we try to use it. Building fines the shit out of you.
Also the elevators suck ass, are mini-sized, and people regularly just get stuck in them for several hours at a time because they're always breaking.

A long time ago I visited the Palazzo Pubblico in Sienna. At the time it was porbably the oldest buiding I had been in. It's amazing, but what really blew me away was that it is still in use as a municipal office block. You look in one of the office doors, wnd there is a junior clerk dealing with parking ticket complaints in an office with a Renaissance fresco on the wall.

6 or 7 years ago I had a chance to participate in a multi-dimensional protest action in Philly in front of the giant Comcast Center on JFK Blvd. It's a typical shiny new skyscraper - a dedication to capitalism and the god of entertainment. But the most jarring thing I learned that day was the deft and sinister sleight-of-hand that corporations facilitate. Outside the entrance to the building is a plaza that is elevated from the street by about 5 feet. It is open and pleasant and has a small hut that sells snacks during the weekdays (we were there on the weekend). After we approached the guards inside to inform them we were there and what our purpose was for the day (a standard gesture of courtesy in most protest actions) - we found the plaza cordoned off 60 minutes later. We - the protestors - were confined to the sidewalk - because the apparent open plaza was in fact a part of the footprint of the Comcast Center's private property. Huh....not a bad trick: Make a section of the "city" "open" to the public for capitalism (purchasing food/displaying your leisure for any photos the company may use/etc) - but not for free speech. Because that plaza we thought was a part of the commons...wasn't. Great job again all - and fantastic choice Alice!

That and some places that are made into parks to suit human tastes like planting invasive plants and not consulting traditional owners as well about things being classified parks and legally what that means for them - potentially becoming an excuse to re-take land again after they have now made their's again. god im too high

As an Egyptian I can confirm that our dicks have been plundered, but there are way more than just 4. I can count at least 6 in just the city of Luxor, and there's one in Tahrir Square now that they dug up from storage in a random town in the Delta that just had an obelisk because a farmer found it while digging a canal. Please give us our dicks back, we miss them.

Great episode guys. Your best work either leaves us depressed or laughing our asses off. Please keep doing both!
Also, could you guys do an episode on the Ford Pinto? I'm not sure if it will be hilarious or horrible, but I'm sure it'll be engaging at the least.

I worked at the Washington Monument and there's no mortor between the blocks - only block-on-block friction and pressure. So if you go to the observation deck, there are these two blocks that are off by like 2 inches because of the earthquake back in 2011 lol.

Fair game, even. Keep trying to edit to fix it, but patreon won’t let me. I studied Art Comservation, and the Parthenon’s fate makes me irrationally angry.
2020-06-04 15:43:56 +0000 UTC
Any chances of an episode on the destruction of the Parthenon? There’s just something about storing a shit ton of gunpowder in your almost complete 2000 year old wonder of the world and/or giving Lord Elgin permission to take stones that had fallen on the ground and him pulling down Parthenon friezes so they were on the ground and fair game for looting!!
