Binky Update

Firstly, thank you for all your supportive messages since our last post, it's humbling and is massively appreciated.

Secondly, taking on board some constructive criticism we'll be doing more regular updates just for you patrons and with that in mind, here's our Binky to-do list directly to your eyeballs from our whiteboard.

The observant among you will have noticed no mention of the instruments as that's still the project we're currently working on. Once that's done, Episode 39 will be ready and we can move on to the rest of the dramas. Now not all of this list will be filmed and we keep adding to it as we remember and come across stuff that needs sorting.

Having completed the hardware for the 3 auxiliary gauges - you'll see the picture above - mounting those in the provided metal 52mm enclosures was all well and good but wasn't ideal. So we have designed and 3D printed our own gauge pods that more neatly meet Nik's requirements. More on that another time.

The main instrument cluster is an original 3 dial Mini dash but won't actually fit without some hefty modification on the bandsaw and the judicious use of epoxy filler - so we've designed our own along the same lines and there's a shot of it in the middle of the design work above.

We weren't particularly familiar with Fusion 360 so it's been a fun time learning how to get somewhat proficient enough to create what we needed, but we were ably assisted by an online course from High Performance Academy. If anyone wants to try any of HPA's courses, let us know and we'll supply you with a discount code.

Anyway, that's all we've got time for today, we're going to be looking at our editing process next as at least one person might be mildly interested.

Oh and look out for The M50 Celica video dropping over the next day or so to you guys first.

Thanks as always!

Cheers,

Nik, Richard and Ben.

Merry lads hope your all keeping well and haven’t burnt binky to the ground yet 👍

Louis

Don't distract them!

Ken

All this bracket talk has me wondering - has anyone counted the brackets in Binky?

Lorenzo

Even by BOM standards, the "Let's learn CAD, electronics, and embedded coding" rabbit-hole is a cavernous and massive one (insert joke about your mum here). Glad to see signs of life, I shall go and light a candle on my workshop shrine to our lord and saviour Fred Dibnah and keep my fingers, toes, and cable ties crossed for an update sometime before the next election.

John U

No worries, I had had so many unfinished projects in my life - just good to know I'm not the only one! Much love coming your way!

Jakob Varming

Hey boys, great to see the update, really appreciate it and everything you do! If you need any help with electronics, 3D printing or CAD I’m more than happy to help out and have decades of experience in most of them!

Ben Crundwell

My bad. Here it is: One supportive message. ❤️

Naibaf Abdul Kobor

Well, you CERTAINLY did not exactly receive a SUPPORTIVE message from ME since your last post, no?

Naibaf Abdul Kobor

All this amazing shit is just gonna make the next build go faster. You guys have done the equivalent of going to college and getting a degree in "Making Kickass Shit."

Frank L Copeland

Glad to see you gents have not taken hammers to each other. I have always figured that you guys post stuff when there is stuff to post. I and many others have faith in you guys. Semper Fidelis.

Ron Walsh

Nice work gents.

Dan North

Your videos and updates always drop exactly when they should; when you are ready. I could be greedy and wish to see one once a week, but that would just spoil me absolutely rotten. Until the next update, I'll have something I greatly enjoy to look forward to! Be kind to yourselves, guys. We all appreciate your taking us along for the ride, so to speak, despite the unavoidable detours and I think everyone appreciates the number of hours your vids take and take away from your ability to get your project done. Thanks!

Will Hirsch

Gosh no. I wish. No that's the boost gauge. Not much modification needed on that one, just the addition of some backlighting. Oh and a completely new face.

Bad Obsession Motorsport

Nice stuff. Is that middle pcb made externally? If not holy cow your DIY stuff is amazing. I’ve just done an ammeter to voltmeter mod for my buddy’s valiant. Understanding how those dual coil movements work took a little more brainpower than I was expecting!

Simon Ludborzs

When the instrument cluster is worth more than a mini. Keep being you, ya crazy bastards. I love it. Just hope you can make replacement bits for it if it breaks years down the road.

Andy Durian

List is still shorter than it was a few years ago. Thanks for the update!

b1pig

Thanks for update! Looking forward to seeing what you have been doing with the 3d printer.

Harold Hotham

Thanks for talking the time to keep us informed. I for one are interested in the minutiae of how everything works, so yes, that includes production. I know it sucks that more content equals less progress though. Hope you guys are keeping well.

Dwain Frankel

I’ve used HPAs geometry / wheel alignment course. Firstly for setting up my own track and road cars but I’m doing loads for others now. Yes you can read most of it online but it’s well worth the money for what they have put together. And they know what they are talking about. Good company for BOM to be collaborating with 👍

David Stuart

No sense in doing something half way, especially at this point. I was thinking about binge watching from episode 1 again, maybe 5th time :)

Bruce Gorney

Looking forward to whatever is coming next, hopefully it needs lots of brackets 😂!

Mike Watkins

Always excited for an update! I need to get my cnc finished up so i can mill you a billet copy of that gauge pod!

Alex Crouse

You're not an idiot! Don't talk about one of my favorite content creators that way!

Adam Stadnick

I was just checking out some of HPA's courses, so I look forward to a future discount code. Looking forward to all the Binky goodness to come. I've been around since the beginning so the little wait is no big deal.

Cliff Bryans

At some distant point in the future (think Citizen Kane final scene), as Nick slowly expires, I am almost certain the last words leaving his lips will be "needs brackets, needs brackets..."

Michael Lambert

Yeah, after I posted that I realised I'm an idiot. I'll have a proper discount code for all Patrons sorted early next week. Anyone who signs up helps us out too with a small kickback.

Bad Obsession Motorsport

Unless the discount code is limited in how many times it can be used, why not just post it? (If you can't, please send it to me! :D ) Glad to see you guys are going to do more updates. The dream is still alive! ONWARDS AND UPWARDS!

Adam Stadnick

thanks for the update. Fusion360 is fun but takes a while to master. there are lots of useful videos on YT on it, but I'm sure you have found those already :)

Frans Wilbrink

This sort of update is just the ticket. Keeps us hooked and salivating for more!

KD Smith

Happy any time you put out content, I'd rather wait til you feel an episode's ready!

Conor Galligan

looking at the whiteboard list, there is definitely a need for more brackets!

Jonathan Lyster-Clayton

You forgot to add “take over world” to the bottom of the list 😜 Or have you already done this 🤔

Andrew Taylor

Needs more Brackets! ;-)

Keith Evans

We already know you're awesome at the fabrication side of things, I'm just amazed at the side projects, just learning CAD is time consuming, then you invented processes like making the gauges, and reverse engineering practically the whole car, electrics, suspension, etc. Mind Boggling what you've managed to come up with so far in that little shed. Well done!

Carlin Comm

I may be intgerested in the HPA gubbins as I use Fusion 360 (well I say "use" it's more like lurching from one complete misunderstanding to the next major cock up).

Martin Dix

Thanks a lot for updating us. Now we have a vague idea of what's going on. 😄

Sebastian Martin

This is great and all. Have you considered putting the original driveline back in instead?

Mike

Massively appreciated chaps, this is what should keep folk ticking over!

Sam Alder

Thanks for the update 8-)

David Yates

Thanks for the update, guys! Looking good, and congratulations on defeating fusion, that's a beast of a learning curve!

Jacob Granger

Can’t wait boys!!!

Brent Nielsen
