Yak shaving and the definition of finished...

How we laughed when the adage was thrown at us that the last 10% of a project takes 90% of the time. Well, we're not laughing now...

On screen, it's relatively easy to "fudge" a shot or a part to look like it's finished when in reality, it's anything but. And at the end of episode 38, the interior looked pretty much done except for the dash. So, the idea was to crack on with the dash and finish everything else off later. Except for an overwhelming desire to actually finish stuff off properly before embarking on the next phase. So, Dean from Trimworks made the 300-mile round trip to collect the rear seats as he wasn't happy with them along with the floor mats which weren't perfect. Meanwhile, we made the new permanent floor coverings and carpeted those, re-wired and finished the passenger door, made new tweeter mounts because the Alpine supplied units were awful, changed the fuel pump, added more noise mitigation, and then took a look at the steering column cowling. It looked amazing covered in black leather and fitted brilliantly. Except, the ignition barrel wouldn't fit within the confines.

It's a hybrid of Mini and MG and has a great big, complicated switching mechanism on the back that goes to a large plug. The plug wouldn't fit so we had to completely disassemble the switch, work out how it operates and then solder some fly leads to be able to remote mount the plug somewhere with room. While Nik was tearing what's left of his hair out over that, I added a load more wires into the loom. The loom that was finished and wrapped. That loom...

Two wires into the Lucas 5AS box up to the column surround to add in the key proximity transponder that somehow Nik has managed to fit, two wires from the ECU up to the instrument cluster for a special surprise CAN reason, (you'll roll your eyes just like I did) and a permanent live up to the auxiliary gauges because of the was the dash works. I sucked my teeth...

In addition, to match the carbon fibre dash, we've been learning how to successfully (or not) use hydrographics to finish a few of the small items of the interior. A simple process in theory and a colossal pain the arse in practice. However, the results are good, and the subtle finish works well.

Meanwhile, our Chevron story has had to be delayed to the ill health of the main man behind the story, Ben is finishing the Silverstone Classic video in the coming days, the Toyota Celica video for BOM TV is imminent, we've got an interesting vehicle restoration found in a friend's garage that's in production, and we're filming in August a car that turned 100 years old this year.

Meanwhile, Binky 39 - which is likely to be the penultimate build episode - is well under way too. Episode 40 is going to be the little finishing off bits then there'll be the dyno episode which necessitates a trip to Ireland and then some performance and fun stuff. Fun... I remember that...

They say that don't let perfection be the enemy of good enough - well that doesn't apply in the shed, especially with the mini.

Thanks for your continuing patience and support. We're always humbled by it and we're doing everything we can not to let you down.

Cheers,

Nik, Richard and Ben.

How ya get on there, all good?

Louis

right well it's an update so that's a start

Munted

How soon is now?

David Yates

This isn’t an airport etc etc etc.

Ben Gray

Is a project ever finished? Can't wait to see the final result!

Bruce Gorney

Awsome lads! Where are you going to in Ireland, would love to see binky up close.

Louis

If there's a video, it doesn't work. A link would be more robust. Good to hear there's progress.

Harri Haataja

We can petition bom to build a waaaahmbulance for you, but it would take them 10 years to build.

Nathen Fredrick

Just happy to know you guys are okay. I have kept the faith and will continue to do so. "It's done when it's done."

Adam Stadnick

What is this word "finished" you keep using?

Guy Chapman, the Solutions Archaeologist

Improbability drive.... Now THAT's got me thinking.....

Ian Ritchie

Was starting to get worried 😅

Alex Abroad

I remember when I 'finished' building my motorbike, the first real ride to shake down any quirks or faults. "She's done." I said... Oh yeah, but I just needed to do this and that and now three years later, she looks a little tatty in places and there's the scratch from where I dropped her. Then there are things I would do differently now that I am more experienced... Trust me, episode 40 will not be the last one! Projects are never really finished, not when you love them and then start to miss working on them. My bike needs to come off the road again now, the paint on the engine has stone stone chips and cracks, the front wheel looks tatty and the suspension needs a clean and a service, Plus there is the half a MM play in the swing arm. Time to start all over again. It's going to be an adventure! Good luck guys, I look forwards to seeing what you do when you reach the mid point!

Sister Jayne

Hopefully it's not something bad, however, you're hemorrhaging users because of it, a life sign once a month is all it takes. At least it's 10 minutes taking your mind of whatever the stuff is, the reward is retaining users which pays you cash money to create as many brackets as you'd like. Which I hope keeps Nik somewhat sane (if you could call it that, better than him building hobnob parts again :)).

Dan Langli

Cool , can't wait

Baron Von Azzkikr

Love that even when they release a major update people aren't happy. Thanks for letting us know we won't have to see your whinging moving forward!

Patrick Kennedy

The improbability drive was powered by the Golden Bail of Prosperity, aka ‘award for the most gratuitous use of the word fuck in a serious screenplay’. It was a constituent part of the key to the Wikket gate, along with Perspex, wood, steel and silver. No mention was ever made of it all being held together with brackets fabbed up out of 2mm plate before being anodized in a god awful green hue and liberally waxoyld. However I will grant you it does feel as though Binky has been locked up in a Slo-Time envelope for a good while now.

Grant Browning

I was just complaining to my wife last night about the months long gap. You're welcome for the update everyone

Caleb Merriott

Nice to see an update..

Riska

A good project car (bike) is never really done.

Dan North

This whole concept of "done" is odd anyway, I've done a frame-up rebuild of my bike in oooh 2016, and there's still a few things that need tidying up, at least one bracket that still needs building (Mmm. Bracket.) and I might never get around to that new paint job I've been thinking about since even before I totaled it.

Michel

I have been building my car since about 2007. Many times life has gotten in the way and slowed (or stopped for years) progress. But any time I am lacking motivation or feel I'm running out room in the car, I can count on a couple lads in a shed for the inspiration to keep going. And to remind me I'm not the only bell-end doing big things in a tiny car.

Dan North

Best part of this video was the subtitles for the electric guitar:Ychwanegwch ychwanegwch ychwanegwch ychwanegwch ychwanegwch ychwanegwch.

rovingpen

Well it kind of is an excuse. It's certainly a reason. Life can get quite lively at times and we've all had a couple of years of it. Hang in there. Besides, we're a decade in, what's a few months? ;-)

Michel

For me, this is inspirational to see someone stay on a project for so long. Also, if I ever worked on something for more than many years, I'd be terrified to take it out and enjoy it. Thanks for letting us take a peak in the shed now and then to see how its going.

Carlin Comm

You're absolutely right Marius. And I'm sorry. Dealing with other stuff not for public consumption has impacted somewhat, but that's no excuse.

Bad Obsession Motorsport

Nice to see some sort of update but it would be nice to see posts more often, just a quick heads-up that you are indeed still alive. You disappeared for several months and didn't deliver on any of the videos which is OK, but people here would love it if you just came in an said ''hey the scheduled videos will be delayed but we are still working on it'' instead of complete radio silence on all social media. ''We're always humbled by it and we're doing everything we can not to let you down.'' Looking at the comments on the previous post there are already A LOT of people who are let down. You have lost well over 1000 members here on Patreon the past two years and the numbers are steadily coming down further. It takes 10 minutes out of your day once or twice a month to post a short paragraph with a status update and it would be for your own good to keep people updated. Seems like such a dumb way to lose a lot of long time fans and supporters.

Marius Nilssen

Is the custom Toyota Celica going to be fitted with an Austin Mini engine and running gear?

Simon Heywood

Absolutely right sir.

Micael Antunes

Patreon for BOM cancelled. After supporting you guys for years through YouTube views and via Patreon I'm no longer willing to pay you each month for a single Binky video in over a *year* to then have a 1 minute B-Roll video of something from Silverstone which isn't what I'm interested in.

Tom Edwards

Everybody knows the first 80% takes 80% of the time and the other 80% takes the other 80% of the time...

russell Hiscock

We'll see..

Tony Harris

The idea is to finish on 42...

Bad Obsession Motorsport

40 episodes? I'm sure you can make it to 42, just add an improbability drive somewhere.

Michel

I think you lads are well into your third 90% by now though. ;-)

Michel

As always, happy to hear from you lot and look forward to your latest ventures into the land of automotive projects (or should I spell that 'insanity'?) 😁

Niek Hoogendoorn

Looking forward to it, thanks for sharing the update. Charles

Charles Blair

so excited

Bell end
