Speaking to Swaim's point concerning feeling like the odd man out playing video games with friends: being that I never liked competition, never took gaming seriously, and never tried that hard to win (and, admittedly, was never good at VGs to begin with and never strived to be better), the sort of toxic environment that could occur when gaming, even with my closest and dearest friends, always put me off. Even playing Mario Party would cause arguments, and I'm sitting there thinking, what does it matter? We'd play GoldenEye, and everyone else would be mad at each over mine placement and cheap shots, while I'm the first to die every time regardless. We'd play Halo 2 (pretty sure it was the second one since it had vehicles, but I don't really know because I never played those on my own), and again I'd either be the first to die, or I'd be a useless member of a team, or fuck up buttons when playing capture the flag and be given grief for it. The whole experience from childhood through my 20s (and I would guess even now into my 40s if I still played games with friends) made the whole thing sour. Also, I never cared for online gaming, partially because of the reasons outlined above, and because. . . why would I want to play with strangers? There's no appeal to me.

Doctor of Doom

I agree with Sean. LAN parties were peak friendship, and online play took this from us. Sure we still could, but we won't. Some limitations made life better.
